Slow walk
It's land mine
It's coal mine
It's a bad thought
On the way to god don't know

My brain's the burger and my heart's the coal
I'm trying to get my head clear
I push things out through my mouth I get refilled through my ears
I'm on my way to god don't know or even care

My brain's the weak heart, and my heart's the long stairs
Inland from Vancouver shore
The ravens and the seagulls push each other inward and outward
Inward and outward

In this place that I call home
My brain's the cliff, and my heart's the bitter buffalo
My heart's the bitter buffalo
We tore one down, and erected another there

The match of the century, absence versus thin air
On the way to god don't know
My brain's the burger and my heart's the coal
On this life that we call home
The years go fast and the days go so slow

General Comment:I think it's about an off and on relationship. The brain knows it's a bad idea, but the heart is longing for attention. In the end, the heart is controlling the brain in this situation and you end up caving into its demand. The "We tore one down and erected another there" kind of hit me with this type of thinking. Also I want to hone in on what nothinggoodtosay said because I interpreted that as support too.

"i have a little different idea about the line "the match of the century: absence versus thin air." someone earlier said that these are the same thing, but i disagree. when someone's absent they're physically (or mentally) unavailable, but they're called "absent" b/c they're expected to be someplace, in class or in the conversation or whatever. thin air is the opposite...the person is gone entirely. they're aren't expected, they aren't in touch, they've just...vanished."

The heart prefers the "absence" instead of nothing. It's easier to keep the person around physically despite that they are somewhere else emotionally. The brain knows the former and you really aren't the sarcastic "match of the century". The heart wants them there because it's much easier to keep them around despite the loss of interest than it is to deal with thinking about never seeing them again for the rest of your life.

Other thoughts: The "land mine" is describing the feeling of being trapped into the relationship and "slow walk" let's you know that the decision making is extremely difficult on whether or not to get involved again. "On the way to God don't know" also shows indecisiveness. This is also shown with the fighting between the ravens and seagulls."In this place that I call home" means you feel more comfortable with that person than without them.

General Comment:Pay attention: Is it "My brain's the weak heart and my heart's the long stairs?" or "Stares?" Physically weak heart and long set of stairs? or emotionally weak heart and long stares at someone?

Song Meaning:this song is about having too big of a heart and always hoping for the best, therefor it is a coal, to your brain, frying your brain. making you numb to any emotions whatsoever. giving up. becoming antisocial. caring so much that you have forgotten how to even care anymore, because you have been sucked dry of all hope. so your heart has fried your brains. that is the meaning of this song.

General Comment:Man, I love the way that they pair the instruments with the lyrics, it has a really powerful effect. I was wondering if anyone understood the lines, "We tore one down and erected another there, the match of the century: absence versus thin air"?

General Comment:Is it possible that he says something other than those first four lines? I'm hearing "It's a coal mine" and "It's a bad thought" as "It's all mine . . . so back off"

I don't have the liner notes, though, so maybe that's Word of God what the lyrics are. Still not sure I'd believe it even if I read it in the liner notes, though.

Song Meaning:Well, in opinion, this song is about the constant question of wether to trust the heart and act on instinct, or to be rational and go with the brain, and not knowing where either choice will take you ("On my way to god don't know"). I think the brain being the burger and the heart being the coal is when you act on instinct when you should have acted rationally, and you end up getting hurt. On the other hand, when the brain is the cliff and the heart is the bitter buffalo, you're choosing to listen to the brain, but that's not what the heart (who is ultimatly in control of emotions anyway) wants. It's a dilemma!

Anyway, that's just my view of it. I'm sure this is one of those songs that can have various meanings. c:

But on another note, I love the line "The match of the century: Absence vs Thin Air"

General Comment:This song always creates a bit of nostalgia for me during autumn time, perhaps it was the circumstances of experiences in my past. But i turn it on and still feel the same today. I have nothing quite new to add to the analysis here, as it seems most people have guessed the obvious interpretation of what "heart cooks brain means". It is not a hard song to figure out, but it is one that i always go back to when admiring lyrical brilliance in my favorite artists. This song expresses a certain condition that happens to some of us..the condition of being overwhelmed/exhausted and burned out by the very things we need. The brain and the heart need each other, yet the co-dependence is fatal through constant contradiction. The notion of emotion versus logic, and the constant battle between them that ensues, and how there is really no solution to it. I think this song is another example of how music and lyrics can most accurately describe a human emotion where as day to day conversation can not. It's another example of how through music we cope with these feelings that have no solutions, and we feel if only temporarily, slightly better by the poetry and notes seeping under our skin and providing relife. Oh modest mouse, how i always come back to you.

General Comment:My brain's the cliff, and my heart's the bitter buffalo

The meaning of this line sort of struck me as showing how the pain in our heart, those emotions we have to deal with, sting, and your brain is the cliff. You're standing at the edge of the cliff and all the emotional stress life brings is constantly pushing your mind over.
