A nice heart and a white suit and a baby blue sedan
And I am doing the best that I can
All the eunuchs, they were standing in rows
Singing, "Please stud us out just as fast as you possibly can"
Sad song, last dance and no one knows who the band was
And Henry, you danced like a wooden Indian
Except this one mattered and I felt it had a spirit
And I shot the story because I didn't hear it that way
And it's hard to be a human being
And it's harder as anything else
And I'm lonesome when you're around
And I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself
And I miss you when you're around

General Comment:It's a bittersweet song about a fading fairy tale. Feeling like you loved someone but after getting to know them, watching the pedestal you placed them on shrink while the image you originally had of them fades. Seeing their true colors but wishing it weren't true....
Having so much faith in who you THINK someone is, not wanting to face the reality of how they're human just like everyone else. If there are no damsels in distress, no princesses, no happy endings then just shoot me. It's hard enough to be a human being. Waiting for someone to bring light into a dark world is dangerous. A hopelessly hopeful beautiful song.

My Interpretation:This is a rather literal interpretation of the lyrics but I think it is in fact about a school dance, or dance of sorts.

The young man is dressed to impress, with good intentions and a car he hopes will impress.

All of "the eunuchs who are standing in rows" would be like the awkward young men standing and watching everything unfold at the dance, feeling emasculated they can't approach a female due to their own insecurities and awkwardness. "Please stud us out just as fast as you possibly can" - Let's get this dance over with as soon as possible.

I think it's generally a song about growing up and the bittersweet feelings associated with putting yourself out there.

EDIT: Read the lyrics back again and tell me this couldn't possibly be the thoughts of a lady observing the awkward men at a dance - maybe one in particular? She looks at one one of them did to impress her and says she's doing the best that she can to perhaps allow him in and open up. But he just can't seem to meet her expectations.

A good song to think about!

My Interpretation:Maybe it's just me because I'm projecting but I don't hear the line as "I shot the story because I didn't hear it that way". I hear it as "I shot the stork because I didn't hear it come late"

Maybe my hearing that line wrong colors my observation of the song. I see it as a person who feels a bit of listlessness at the state of their life. Everything is a grind. This person has a job they don't like, a car they don't like, they wear clothes that makes them seem like their parents. They've settled into being being another soulless automaton in the suburbs who gets up to go to work and does the same thing over and over again. Time just keeps creeping by and eventually he or she realizes they forgot to have kids or anything in life really that brings real joy. He or she has a partner that is just there. There's no passion there. They've just settled into these miserable lives and being around each other only highlights how utterly alone they feel.

But like I said I may be projecting.

General Comment:I like the comment on how it's just a simple dance and the awkwardness of it all, but I connected to this song in a different way. In the past few years of my life I've realized how hard it is to understand people. I had a girlfriend that when she was away, I would miss her. I had an idealized image of who she was. But when she was around, she was someone else. I felt lonesome when she was around.

My Opinion:its a story about a formal dance, he probably feels uncomfortable there and he can't do anything about it and he feels lonely but he's with a lot of people.

General Comment:I think it might be about being socially awkward. There are several hints that state that he's socially awkward and the whole prom thing is him having to a prom but he doesn't want to be around all these other people and embarrass himself. Maybe a hint of Issac's past but idk. It was just a guess I made in like two seconds after hearing the song and looking at the lyrics.

My Interpretation:Might be off-beam here, but I've got to thinking that this song isn't about a prom, or a wedding, but in fact a funeral. And a bunch of other stuff...

"A nice heart" is something you'd say about someone who has just died. A "white suit" would refer to a funeral suit. "I'm doing the best I can" is what you say to say to someone who asks how you are, when someone you know has died.

The enuchs standing in rows would be the old folk standing in the pews.

The "I felt it had a spirit" would refer to an aborted child, as would the line about shooting the stork. This is alluded to in a couple of other MM songs.

The baby blue sedan...not sure about that, nor about the lonesome bit at the end. But the tone of the song suggests a more downbeat theme than a prom or a wedding.

General Comment:this song, to me, is ultimately about disappointment. the protagonist thinks he's doing the best he can, but he can't find love. the eunuchs have nice voices, but they can't get what they want, either. dancing like a wooden indian to me means not dancing at all.

"And I shot the story because I didn't hear it that way" could be someone ruining a movie because of their director's vision. lol

"harder as anything else" means everything is hard, imo.

being lonesome when someone is around, to me, means being disappointed that you aren't connecting with them like you want to or just being disappointed in their company. missing them while they're around is the same, imo. never being lonesome while you're by yourself probably means you have no expectations and can't be disappointed.
