Well I ain't sure but I been told
He's baking cakes inside our souls stayed awake took a nap got myself my
Bottles back
I'm breaking them out in the street
Walkin' 'round in my bare feet

I do not need you to tell me that I am not a cat
I cause a ride we caught some air
He's never gonna cut his hair
It takes more time to make a fake we night swam down in the lake washed the
Dirt off our intentions prattle on 'bout bad inventions

I came as ice
I came as a whore
I came as advice that came too short
I came as gold
I came as crap
I came clean and I came as a rat

It takes a long time but God dies too
But not before he'll stick it to you
Well I ain't sure but I been told
You never die and you never grow old

I came as call
I came as flat
I came too soon so I came back
I came as flowers
I came as nice
I came as dirt and I came as it's price

It takes a long time but God dies too
But not before he'll stick it to you
I don't know but I been told you never die and you never grow old

General Comment:I am pretty sure that right before the first chorus where it says 'Paddle on with our bad inventions' it is actually 'Prattled on about bad inventions'

Lyric Correction:I think modessssssssssssszllt mouse is fucking amazing because they make you think about so much with just some rambling lrics. I don't know if he is genious or out of his mind or if he is the truth and everyone else is crazy..but they make so much sense to me. I believe in reincarnation but I think isaac is saying how arbitrary it could possibly be and how even that idea doesn't suit him. You could um as a rat or a whore or some ice, it could get screwed up and u could come too soon...so if reincarnation exists god probably isn't behind it because god is just an arbitrary asshole if he does...he wants to believe it would turn out better than that so because it possibly may not he doesn't want to buy into it either. I believe we have many "lifetimes" but that time doesn't really exist on the whole level and that u don't ever really die u just pass through different phases and you are supposed to just learn or get through it the best u know how...barefoot and throwing bottles possibly.. it could be he doesn't place a whole lot of value on this "lifetime" because he has more and so why not enjoy them instead of worrying about judgment and heaven and hell because that's just "god" sticking it to u because even God dies...there is no almighty out there.. u get old in this lifetime but because u don't die you are really never getting old... u are just learning... even as a whore or a rat... I thinking coming as a modest mouse is a cool idea because the whole big picture can make u really modest and humble because its so big we can't even understand it...so all we have is "I don't know but I've been told."

General Comment:Ok....I skimmed through all the comments and I can't believe no one has mentioned this. I think the rat is referring to the rat race.

General Comment:I think its about not being real, or being fake or whatnot. And if you practice this, you'll get whats coming to you. When he says "i came as a..." hes talking about how he presented himself at the time during whatever was going on in his life whenever he wrote this. Karma. Or lying. when you lie it gets harder and harder to support that lie with other lies and eventually you'll probably get caught (depending)...i dunno, im drunk ha!

General Comment:my favorite line in this song is the "i don't know but i've been told you never die and you never grow old" and like someone said earlier its used in a couple different songs. I think at the very end of another song on M&A and in Two inch horses (2 faced monsters) off of Everywhere. It doesn't seem Isaac likes the idea of living forever. Liek that could be Gods greatest punishment for us. i think of Two inch horses the most when i hear I came as a rat because of the usage of the same line and i think two inch horses elaborates more on it

You said, "I hope you live forever"
Don't you wish that on me
    You said, "Don't be clever"

its like someone is trying to wish the best for the speaker but it really is the worst thing the speaker could have imagined because living forever just means more of the bad in life rather than the good. Its very pesamistic but most mouse songs are kind of like that. The person then just says don't be clever like the speaker is just tryin to be funny, some people could think that to live forever (or the afterlife) is our only goal in life. When really its just to make the most out of what we have. There is nothing greater than living so just go with it. Maybe there is an afterlife or heaven or w/e but noone knows. You shouldn't get your hopes up.

I came as a rat seems to be about reincarnation because its saying all these things he came as. But its always turns to something bad. Life is never always good and thats y brock doesn't want to live forever. Doin the cockroach i guess is the same too with life being just repetitive cycles that seem endless. With alot of his songs Brock just seems to be denying the hope religion gives to us because its better to work with what we know we have here and create our own hope instead of hoping for more in the unknown future. idk thoughts are ramblin on... its what modest mouse and all great music makes me do.

General Comment:These are couplets. So each two lines only make sense together, but still keep to the theme. I haven’t got a clue so far what it’s about. I’ll try and break it down. Let me attempt this.

“Well, I ain't sure, but I been told
He's baking cakes inside our souls”

    Rumour.
    Warm souls. Pleasant people/person.

    “Stayed awake, took a nap
    Got myself my bottles back”

    Tired. Then recharged, fresh.
Got his sanity back. Got his mind back together. His thoughts are collected.

“I'm breaking them out on the street
Walking around in my bare feet”

He’s going to back to his old state. He’s doing it on purpose.
Walking around as himself, and nothing more. In his bare feet, it just him and the earth he walks on.

“I do not need you to tell me that I am not a cat”
You don’t need to tell him that he’s something he’s not. You don’t need to tell him who he is.

“I caught a ride, we caught some air
He's never going to cut his hair”

“I” caught a ride, “we” caught some air. He caught a ride to meet with someone. To refresh.
He’s never going to cut his hair because he is comfortable with who he is and doesn’t need people to tell him what/who to be.

“It takes more time to make a fake
We night-swam down in the lake
Washed the dirt off our intentions
    Prattle on about bad inventions”

It takes more effort to be someone you’re not.
Night, dark, no one can see you. There’s no need to be someone you’re not.
Cleaning your bad intentions to something good. You don’t mean to be someone you’re not.
Prattle about common topics that normal people talk about. Back to normal.

“I came as ice, I came as a whore
I came as advice that came too short
I came as gold, I came as crap
I came clean and I came as a rat”

    Came cold, but came used.
He came as helpful, but it wasn’t enough. He wasn’t enough.
He came as something everyone loved, but he was something everyone hated.
He came out with the truth to reveal he was a dirty sneaky person. A rat.

“It takes a long time, but God dies too
But not before he'll stick it to you
Well, I don't know, but I been told
You never die and you never grow old”

It takes a long time but eventually even the great and almighty meets their ends. But until then he will always be known as great and almighty – always better than you.
The last two lines could mean a number of things. Perhaps he’s talking about god. How he’ll never die and he’ll never grow old. But it’s a rumour, for he has no real evidence nor does anyone else. The “you” implies he is talking to you. He’s talking to the audience. Throughout the song he talks about himself. These are the lessons he has learnt. And it’s a lesson to you.

I haven't a clue what to make of that. Maybe it might clear a few things up.
