Lyrics for Being Boring as interpreted by Mina

Being Boring Lyrics
I came across a cache of old photos
And invitations to teenage parties
"Dress in white" one said, with quotations
From someone's wife, a famous writer
In the nineteen-twenties
When you're young you find inspiration
In anyone who's ever gone
And opened up a closing door
She said: "We were never feeling bored

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end

When I went I left from the station
With a haversack and some trepidation
Someone said: "If you're not careful
You'll have nothing left and nothing to care for
In the nineteen-seventies"
But I sat back and looking forward
My shoes were high and I had scored
I'd bolted through a closing door
I would never find myself feeling bored

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end
We were always hoping that, looking back
You could always rely on a friend

Now I sit with different faces
In rented rooms and foreign places
All the people I was kissing
Some are here and some are missing
In the nineteen-nineties
I never dreamt that I would get to be
The creature that I always meant to be
But I thought in spite of dreams
You'd be sitting somewhere here with me

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end
We were always hoping that, looking back
You could always rely on a friend

And we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: "Make amends"
And we were never being boring
We were never being bored
'Cause we were never being boring
We were never being bored

"This song is about the ideals that you have when you're young, and how they turn out." If you watch the clip (which is one of my favorites), you feel sad because you remember those times where all you cared about was having fun with your friends. This song is also about nostalgy, souvenirs, looking back to the past, and realizing you've become "the creature" you've always meant to be. The song is not depressing, it's beautifully sad and profound. Listen to it, and you'll remember your friends, your family members, your early loves, those people you'll never see again, and that you'll truly never forget. One of the best of 90's.

I have never seen the video but to be honest I think this song is quite depressing and sad. Not to mention the fact that it's specifically about AIDS and how it claimed so many talented lives in the gay community back in the 70s and 80s.

I think this song is about the history of the gay community, emphasizing important times in history when gay people were openly expressing themselves in clubs and party venues. At first I thought it might be about one person but thats impossible, not even Ian McKellen has been hitting the club scene for that long (since the 20s).

The title is inspired by a quote from Zelda Fitzgerald ("… someone's wife, a famous writer in the 1920s…"). Who said something along the lines of 'she refused to be bored because she wasn't boring'. I also like the quote from a journo I can't remember at the moment who said, of this song, something along the lines of: 'You don't get to write a song like 'Being Boring' without being very talented'.

It's wierd that noone has commented on the pet shop boys (or not many people.) I would have thought songs that suggested homosexuality would get a lot of posts (but that's generally in popular bands that haven't announced themselves as gay, I suppose)

I'm amazed at how many songs people reckon have homosexual references. It seems that if it is PSB - ah MUST be about being gay. I think this one is the furthest away from singing about being gay than the rest of them. Its about going from boyhood to adulthood to erm..famoushood. Nothing about being gay in there at all.

Neil wrote this song partly in memory of his best friend, who died of AIDS in 1989 ("but I thought, in spite of dreams, you'd be sitting somewhere here with me.") I guess there is also a general sense of melancholy about all the lives that were lost in the gay community around that time due to AIDS as well, so I suppose you could say there is sort of a gay connection there but the song is really nothing to do with being gay. I think the main emphasis is the deeply nostalgic feelings of the narrator (Neil) has looking back on his life and at the way things have turned out now. Everything's changed now, everyone's new and his friend isn't there with him anymore. There's a real sense of loss but also relief at having got to where he is and happiness at having led such a fulfilled life. ("we were never being boring.") The music is just as beautiful as the lyrics, if not more. It's an incredibly beautiful song - possibly my favourite song ever.

So true. Just because a musician is gay, that doesn't mean every song they write is going to be about being gay. For Chrissakes. Same with people seeing drug references everywhere in Depeche Mode music. Most irritating and rather superficial.
