Everything that keeps me together is falling apart
I've got this thing that I consider my only art
Of fucking people over.
My boss just quit the job
Says he goin' to find blind spots
And he'll do it.

The 3rd planet is sure that they're being watched
By an eye in the sky that can't be stopped.
When you get to the promise land
Your gonna shake that eyes hand.

Your heart felt good
It was drippin' pitch and made out of wood.
And your hands and knees
Felt cold and wet on the grass to me.
Outside naked, shiverin' looking blue,
From the cold sunlight that's reflected off the moon.
Baby cum angles fly around you
Reminding you we used to be three and not just two.

And that's how the world began.
And that's how the world will end.

A third planet had just been made
And we were swimming in the water,
Didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter.
When it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies
And another had been found another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic.
And how.

The universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were.
Everything that keeps me toghther
Is falling apart I got this thing
I consider my only art and fucking people over

My Interpretation:I've been listening to this song for years and for a long time just enjoyed the atmospheric ambiguity of this and the whole album. It's only recently that I've bothered to look deeper into these lyrics and really appreciate what the music is trying to convey.

In many ways this song reminds me of 'The Cat and The Moon' by W.B Yeats, the lyrics imply a connection between seemingly random and even antipodal phenomena that transcends logic and reason. Brock is really exploring the interconnectedness of all things in the universe, perhaps inspired by the eastern philosophies of Buddhism, the idea of dependent origination and causal connection between everything in the universe. But there is also a lingering sense of paranoia, perhaps the writer's own anxiety concerning the significance of anything if everything is in some way the same.

My Interpretation:To me, the song is a reflection on life, the universe, and god after the loss of a child or miscarriage.

"And baby ’come angels fly around you/Reminding you we used to be three and not just two" "the third had just been made… Didn’t know then was it a son was it a daughter"

General Comment:i think the verse that starts "a third had just been made" is talking about how people are like planets because their bodily fluids are like oceans and organisms live in them. and the third is a baby and the other verse is talking about having sex on a cold wet lawn and the baby cum angels reminded there used to be a third but now theyre back to two.

General Comment:This gives a wonderful sense of the connection of everything.
Our blood like the Atlantic, the animals that coexist on the planet, same water, same blood.

Our world is a sphere, you can endlessly travel in a single direction, going past where you were before, and the universe works the same way, spaced with no bias of direction or distance.

From two, a third is born, and soon enough someone dies off. That three becomes two, regardless of any concept of creation or evolution. And you can't really do much about this flow of existance, as is shown by his only art of managing to fuck people over.

No matter how far you go, you return to the beginning. Three becomes two. Everything that held you together, friends, family, life itself, soon falls back apart. It returns, and if you found what you were looking for, that promise land, I guess you would want to shake that eye's hand.

This has such beauty to it. It feels simple, but speaks wonders I can't fully understand.

General Comment:I believe that the first part of this song is talking about Adam and Eve's loss of God in their life. Then the lines "and that's how the world began and that's how the world will end" connects that scenario with a couple who loses their child. It's saying that everything is cyclical and we as humans have no ability to combat God's control over our lives. Originally the "we were three and not just two" is talking about Adam Eve and their loss of God, this exact same verse is repeated after the song introduces this couple with a baby on the way. In this repetition the same line is now talking about the couple and their loss of a child. "The universe is shaped exactly like the earth" is saying that as humans all that we will ever experience is this earth so to us this earth is the universe and theres nothing we can do to better our situation because "if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were"

This is just my interpretation of the song, I don't claim to truly understand this genius song. This is just what makes sense to me.

General Comment:I reckon the whole song is kind of like trying to sum up the whole universe in just a couple of minutes and showing the whole "microcosm, macrocosm" thing of how everything is just a smaller example, and a larger example, of something else, and showing how everything is both big and small at the same time and how it's just mind-boggling and trippy... Like zooming a video camera out and in on some object so that the viewers end up just feeling dizzy and not being to tell when the object is zoomed in and when it's not.

For example the whole "... in the water in the oceans in our bodies... another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the atlantic." goes back and forth rapidly between tiny things like our bodies and bloodstreams to oceans.

"The universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go
Straight long enough you'll end up where you were." is the same, on a huge scale. Imagine a music video where the screen zooms out from a shot of the earth to the shot of the whole universe and back again in time with each line.

"Outside, naked..." is looking at Adam and Eve and God (as just a general basis for the start of humanity) and then "... Three and not just two. And that's how the world began.
And that's how the world will end." is saying how the end will probably be the same--except there's just two people, they had a child but the child died and they have since become infertile or just don't want to bother trying to keep the human race alive anymore, and so it will dwindle down to nothing again. Ending the same way as it began, everything and anything is all the same, etc.

    Well, just my opinion anyway.

General Comment:As a whole, this song almost sounds like someone who has just experienced disaster, or a great loss; something devastating. They're looking at the world, the universe and existence itself, trying desperately to make sense of it all. They just want something solid to understand, while being overwhelmed by their own emotions.

The way the chorus just goes off like a rant is what gives me this feeling. Definitely one of my top favorite songs by Modest Mouse. Some of their best lyrics.

I think this is about when people at one point in their lives feel threatened by someone or disagree with their actions or values but then find themselves later on doing what they have to in order to succeed and finding that they've sort of become the people that they originally disagreed with. It's kinda like turning your back on what you care about to get what you thought you wanted.

Song Meaning:The line "The third planet is sure that they're being watched by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped and when you get to the promise land, you're gonna shake the eye's hand" is pretty obivious so I'm gonna look stupid saying but; The third planet(Earth) is sure that they're being watched by an eye in the sky that can't be stopped(We are sure God is watching us and can't be stopped) and when you get to the promise land(When you die and go to Heaven) you're gonna shake the eye's hand(You're going to meet God).
