Lyrics for Anesthesia as interpreted by M4R5

Anesthesia Lyrics
Everybody's talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man,
But she looks so kind and gentle, it just doesn't stand to reason,
I saw her right there just the other night as stately as a slot machine,
But when she looked my way something mad as hell came over me,

Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion,
I never loved you, how did you find me?
The cops will never prove complicity now,

Anna..........,
All good children go to heaven!

I remember your face that august night
when we lied about the beautiful time to come
And that crazy old man who came much too late and caused a chain reaction,
I've been hanging out here for eleven long years like a church mouse
wondering where the cat as gone
And looking at you now is driving me to distraction,

Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion,
I never loved you, how did you find me?
The cops will never prove complicity now,

Anna..........,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
All good children go to heaven!

Brett wrote this song, and I read somewhere that he said it was about drugs. Seems like BS to me, it seems like a normal love song to a chick, but, ya know, Brett's weird so it could be.

As on of my favorite songs of all time, I remember the first time I read these and how strange they were to me. I had no idea what was being said for the most part until then.

It appears to me that it is almost about insanity - the thoughts inside a killer's head, or the thoughts inside of someone's head that has a screw loose.

I can see how its drug related, the delivery man obviously OD'd. How drugs never really seem to bad with all the peer pressure style of propaganda surrounding them "It wont kill you". And the effects after words. The chorus, depicts how they seemed harmless and the high felt so initially good but was only killing him. And the second verse is about the long term side effects, the permanent down and self loathing. Only to get addicted again at the slightest try.

"Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion"

I can see where this might be a drug song. "...a little gun, here comes oblivion" sounds like a heroin reference to me.

i agree with milhouse... this is one of my favourite songs by bad religion.
bretts comparing a drug addiction with a relationship with a girl- anesthesia; the name of a girl, the drug. the way the drug is personified works very well i think, where he is addicted to the girl. he cant help taking the drug again- he doesnt go looking for it but it finds him. when he says 'i never loved you' it shows how helpless he is when he comes accross the drug again.

THE MEANING BEHIND ANESTHESIA?
Anesthesia is the influence a person is under when a drug has been taken(i.e. anesthetic)
Complicity is when a person is part of a crime(i.e. murder)
We all no about Mr. Bretts drug addiction(which has now passed)
I'm thinking this is a true story or maybe a dream that Brett has experienced.
The drug took him in and made Brett agree to complicity which was to murder the delivery guy.
OK, i'm not sure if this is the true meaning but i've done my best and you guys can all disagree, i'm just adding my opinion.
'I've been hanging out here for eleven long years like a church mouse
wondering where the cat as gone'
I think this shows how Brett has become bored(mouse) because he is no longer chased by the cat(drug/girl) that can easily overpower him

does anyone else see the uncanny connections between this song and the Manson Family murders? "Everybody's talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man," that happened at the Manson house. A delivery man had the wrong address, and a girl brought him in and killed him.
"All good children go to heaven! " After one particular murder, the family wrote that over the corpses in blood.

"And that crazy old man who came much too late and caused a chain reaction, " i think that is charles himself.

This is my interpatation, and I also guess it about drugs. I'm guessing that Brett has tried to personify Drugs as someone claled Anatheisa.

"Everybody's talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man,
But she looks so kind and gentle, it just doesn't stand to reason,"
He knows that the delivery guy was killed by drugs, but he's so hooked on them, he doesn't care anymore, and thinks that it can't happen to him.

"I saw her right there just the other night as stately as a slot machine,
But when she looked my way something mad as hell came over me, "

Self explanatory, he took was trying to give in, but when he saw thedrugs he could help himself and had to take them.

"Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion,
I never loved you, how did you find me?
The cops will never prove complicity now, "

Here, he might be commiting suicide or sonmething, to get away from the crims he commited, so no-onn could trace him. Line 2 is him asking, why did this happen to me (how did you find me?) , I didn't wan't it to happen to me(I never loved you)

"remember your face that august night
when we lied about the beautiful time to come "

Remebering telling himself that what he was doing was okay, even thogh he knew he was lying to himself.

"And that crazy old man who came much too late and caused a chain reaction,"

Maybe the police came for him, but he had already taken the drugs and went crazy.

"I've been hanging out here for eleven long years like a church mouse
wondering where the cat as gone
And looking at you now is driving me to distraction, "

Maybe his drugs were taking away, and after 11 years he started wondering, why was I so addicted?

What about the girl. And there are some things that just add up too perfectly. the count to 7, and then 11 long years. That makes 18. But if you think about it that way, many of the other lines don't make sense. Any thoughts?

To me I don't think there is a girl, I think the "girl" is herione. Herione killed the delivery man (or the drug dealer), but he is convinced it wont happen to him.

"I never loved you/How did you find me" is that he doesn't go out looking for it, it finds him.

Then in the second verse I think he has got over his addiction, and know he feels a bit bored without, but no longer has the urge for it.

"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
All good children go to heaven" is a reference to the beatles song "you never give me your money" where the counting only goes up the seven, but the line the same otherwise.

I'm sure it goes "1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and all good children go to heaven" which would make sense because it comes from solitare. when you deal you count "1,2,3,4,5,6,7 all good children go to heaven, if they die put them in a pie, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7" you place one card for each syllable.

but i may be wrong

ok, i've read all the comments, and i've read mr brett's description of the song.

my opinion is that this song is a reference to heroin addiction, most likely base on mr bretts drug addiction at the time, which of many things was heroin. this is what it means to me:

"Everybody's talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man"
[everbody's talking about the drug that kills its dealers and users]

the girl is the drug, the delivery man is the drug dealer, friend, or person that introduced you or got you hooked. so, everyone is talk about this dangerous drug that kills people.

"But she looks so kind and gentle, it just doesn't stand to reason,"
[but the drug looks so kind and gentle, it just doesn't stand to reason]

the drug seems harmless enough, after all, you can control it, it's just a powder or liquid. how hard can it be, right?

"I saw her right there just the other night as stately as a slot machine, "
[i saw the drug the other night it was majestic and rewarding]

stately is defined as being majestic. so, if you think of a majestic looking slot machine that you put money, and it rewards you...

"But when she looked my way something mad as hell came over me, "
[But i started taking the drug, i became unreasonable]

so as he became hooked on the drug, he became more and more unreasonable. an addict.

"Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, "

anesthesia is a medicine that makes you feel good. mona lisa is a portrait of the "perfect woman".

"I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion, "

possible reference to heroin

I never loved you, how did you find me?
[ inever wanted to be an addict, how did this happen?]

The cops will never prove complicity now,
[no one will be able to prove a partership]

Anna..........,

All good children go to heaven!

"I remember your face that august night when we lied about the beautiful time to come "
[I remember when i first tok the drug and thought i could handle it]

here he's remembering when he first started taking the drug. when you first start, you think you can handle it. you can do it when you want. you dont NEED it. but that turns out to be just a lie as you sink into addiction.

"And that crazy old man who came much too late and caused a chain reaction, "
[And dealer/pusher/friend that gave me the drug in the middle of the night and caused all of this to happen]

here, hes remember the person that first introduced him to the drug

"I've been hanging out here for eleven long years like a church mouse wondering where the cat as gone "
[I've been doing this for eleven long years and the thrill is gone]

hes been addicted for eleven years, and the initial thrill and fun of the drug is gone, he's wondering where the initial fun and excitement of the drug went to

"And looking at you now is driving me to distraction, "
[And seeing/thinking about the drug, is building up a craving]

but of course, every good addict will continue to crave the drug of choice, and he is no different

Bravo indeed. the only thing i would disagree with is the idea of the "crazy old man"

why would the drug dealer come much too late? it seems to me that he is referring to someone trying to stop him from doing drugs, but is "much too late"

Everybody's talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man

[Brett is obviously referencing the Charles Manson Murders. Its the perfect poetic double meaning. We pretty much agree that the girl is anathesia and the delivery man is the user. We cant think of the delivery man as the drug dealer, thats over analyzing.]

But she looks so kind and gentle, it just doesn't stand to reason,

[ this is sarcasm im guessing. Brett has seen the effects of heroin first hand. He is looking at the drug from a first timers point of view. It doesnt look deadly, it just looks like fun (kind and gentle)]

I saw her right there just the other night as stately as a slot machine,

[ the slot machine in my opinion is filler, but i guess you can compare gambling to drug abuse as tempting. But every word Brett writes doesnt have to mean something witty. Correct me if i'm wrong but im assuming that he wrote this song after his drug addiction. And with that assumption, i think he was tempted to try the drug again.

But when she looked my way something mad as hell came over me,

[ I think he came real fucking close to trying maybe even desperate. Bit when he realized what he was doing, he was angry not only at the drug for his problems. But himself for even thinking about it.

Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion,
I never loved you, how did you find me?
The cops will never prove complicity now,

[ This is the descprition of the drug. Anasthesia (heroin) Mona Lisa (perfect), little gun (needle) oblivion (blittzzed out of your fucking skull!!) When he says he never loved you, hes trying to convince himself that he is no longer dependent or addicted. "How did you find me" is pretty self explanitory i mean he wants to know what caused him to start thinking about it again.

Anna..........,
All good children go to heaven!

[ random bullshit]

I remember your face that august night
when we lied about the beautiful time to come

[ this is where it gets foggy, is he himself talking about an experience with the drug. Maybe he is implying that when he was still abusing heroin he was lying to others about quitting]

And that crazy old man who came much too late and caused a chain reaction,

[ i really dont understand this line if someone can help me i would appreciate it]

I've been hanging out here for eleven long years like a church mouse
wondering where the cat as gone

[ The church mouse and the cat is reference to heroin and the chase for its high. Each time searching and searching abusing and abusing more and more to get that perfect high.

And looking at you now is driving me to distraction,

[ Im guessing he is thinking about the drug and he is being tempted again]

Anesthesia, Mona Lisa, I've got a little gun, here comes oblivion,
I never loved you, how did you find me?
The cops will never prove complicity now,

Anna..........,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
All good children go to heaven!

well thats my take on it.

I agree... up until the thing with the Mona Lisa.

That painting is inherently ambiguous. Along with lines like "but she looked so kind and gentle/it just doesn't stand to reason," makes me think that he doesn't really know if the drug will be bad or good (good as a in spur of the moment feeling, or bad as in death or longtime effects) and it is ambigous in that respect.

As kirbster said: In the first line, in my mind, the girl who killed the delivery man IS heroin, he's comparing the love / addiction of a drug, to what he would feel about a woman, he's hooked. and further in the song, he names the drug... anna, short for anesthesia, an effect which drugs can have on you.

If you cant take a hint; even from the people who have clearly stated it. It is about a heroin addiction and also has ties with the Charles Manson murders.

"everybodys talking about the girl who went and killed the delivery man."

In the manson Murders a delivery man who had a wrong adress was allured in by the girl at the door and she took him in and killed him.

Comparing Heroin to that specific girl/incident and everyones talking about it. But it didnt look dangerous last time Brett Saw it, it looked kind and gentle, it didnt make sense that it killed someone.

and bla bla bla figure out the rest from there. and please. use your brain
