Hmm, hmm

Say goodbye
To not knowing when
The truth in my whole life began
Say goodbye
To not knowing how to cry
You taught me that

And I'll remember
The strength that you gave me
Now that I'm standing on my own
I'll remember
The way that you saved me
I'll remember

Inside I was a child
That could not mend a broken wing
Outside I looked for a way
To teach my heart to sing

And I'll remember
The love that you gave me
Now that I'm standing on my own
I'll remember
The way that you changed me
I'll remember

I learned
To let go
Of the illusion
That we can possess
I learned to let go
I travel in stillness
And I'll remember happiness
I'll remember (I'll remember)

(Hmm, hmm)
I'll remember
(Hmm, hmm)

And I'll remember
The love that you gave me
Now that I'm standing on my own
I'll remember
The way that you changed me
I'll remember (I'll remember)

No, I've never been afraid to cry
Now, I finally have a reason why

I'll remember (I'll remember)
No, I've never been afraid to cry
Now, I finally have a reason why

I'll remember (I'll remember)
No, I've never been afraid to cry
Now, I finally have a reason why

I'll remember (I'll remember)
No, I've never been afraid to cry
Now, I finally have a reason why

Remember (I'll remember)

    Song Meaning

The Curious Case of I'll Remember is what I'll call this Madonna ballad movie! It's interesting to note that after every Ciccone misfire-parts of I'm Breathless (Dick Tracy)/Truth or Dare/the Sex book/Body of Evidence/Letterman appearance and 9/11/move to England/American Life, she comes back to good graces as far as rock critics are concerned. So where does beautiful and heartfelt ballad chapter I'll Remember fit and tie in to all of this? For one thing, Brit guitar teacher/rock critic/Madonna scholar Rikky Rooksby happily quoted "A surprisingly understated and heartfelt Madonna ballad perfomance. The production team of Patrick Leonard and Billy Orbit create an arrangement that is close to a Seventies/Eighties AOR power ballad with the histrionics reined in and the guitars taken out. In her writing, Madonna looks back gracefully on a fond love affair." It's true -in I'll Remember, Madonna begins to cry because she has been touched by those who have inspired her, namely her long-lost mother, her ballet teacher Christopher Flynn, her early influence Martin Burgoyne, her photographer friend Herb Ritts and more recently her musical mentor Adam Yauch-even in the present and future her kids Lola, Rocco, David and Mercy have their musical mother to thank for such a fun life. So the premise and promise of I'll Remember is this: Yes, Madonna is brilliant! No, Madonna has never been afraid to cry. In her sad moments, that's when Madonna is usually at her best. She is fearless and brave, that Madonna! Lady Madge is a beautiful Rock Queen who loves her life. Born and raised in the auto factories of Michigan-Detroit Rock City, Madonna Ciccone is the superstar with an indie-DIY spirit and aesthetic. In I'll Remember, Madonna gives back her selfless Fortinitude and turns that tuneful and melodic ballad dance into a Rust Belt All-American ballet in miniature. Not bad from a girl in the Midwest.
