Holy cow! I think I've got one here
Now just what am I supposed to do?
I've got a number of irrational fears
That I'd like to share with you

First, there's rules about old goats like me
Hangin' 'round with chicks like you -but I do like you-
And another one: you say "like" too much

But I'm shaking at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby, I'm afraid I'm falling for you
'N I'd do about anything to get the hell out alive
Or maybe I would rather settle down with you

Holy moly, baby, wouldn't you know it?
Just as I was bustin' loose
I gotta go turn in my rock star card
And get fat and old with you
'Cause I'm a burning a candle you're a gentle month
Teaching me to lick a little bit kinder
And I do like you - you're the lucky one
No! I'm the lucky one

Holy Sweet goddamn! You left your cello in the basement
I admired the glowing the stars
And tried to play a tune'

I can't believe how bad I suck, it's true
What could you possibly see in little ol' 3-chord me?
But it's true - you like me, I like you too
I'm ready, let's do it baby

General Comment:I think this song is about the same girl as "El Scorcho."
This is almost a sequel, it's when he finally works up the nerve to talk to her. These are the thoughts going through his head.

The "Cello in the basement" line I think hints towards El Scorcho's line "Oh, the redhead said you shred the Cello, and I'm jello, baby."
Also, the "I'm shakin' at your touch" has a general "El Scorcho" feel.

I love the line where he says "Silly old 3 chord me."

General Comment:"And I do like you, you're the lucky one. No I'm the lucky one."

I think he's saying you have to be someone's luck to get some luck for yourself. Be lucky to get lucky.

General Comment:TheSilverNoble, if you don't know about guitaring, maybe I can give you a hand.

The song's main feature is extensive modulation, which means, the guys changes the scale several times. Said like this it means nothing, but let me explain. This means that, instead of using three of four chords, he uses 12! different ones, which is a lot. To give you an example, grab your music player and switch fast between the first verse and the last one, the one that comes after the solo ( starting "I can't believe how...") . Even if you never heard anything about modulation, you'll recognize that he's signing in a different melody. It 'feels' different. The solo itself is in another scale, but that's harder to get.

So the guy's no 'little three-chord ol' me', but rather a quite accomplished guitarist indeed. Pinkerton's filled with those quirks, and with some great soloing too, all by Rivers.

But the lyrics ring true if you think about them in the context of the story told by the characters. In a self-deprecating way, he has no self-esteem next to her, therefore he says that he sucks, what could she see in him?

So pretty much the point is: He's doing some self-bashing in the lyrics. (The line IS clever indeed!)

    General Comment:Great song, obviously.

Hey, anyone ever wonder why the tuning on the album version is like 1/8 of a fraction sharp?

It's highly annoying when trying to jam... (And I will preempt anyone attempting to be clever by stating, "duh, its half-step down"; I already know that, derrr, but I swear its slightly sharp!!!!)

General Comment:Isn''t the whole album Pinkerton about one girl? I was under that impression.

General Comment:ok i got a better one for ya.... "Falling for You" sees rivers falling in love with a girl who leaves her cello in the basement of his cambridge home. when he attempts the instrument, and is startled by how bad he is at it, he wonders what she sees in "little ol'three-chord" him. He also testifies how he wants to trade in his "rock star card" to grow fat and old with her.

this was taken from the book i mentioned above...

General Comment:The whole Pinkerton album is referring to River's favourite Opera "Madame Butterfly". A lot of similarities between the two... also the opera inspired him to write this album... if you want to know more about River, pick up his autobiography called "river's edge: the weezer story" by john d. luerssen.
