I'm tired from exploring you
I'm sorry you've had some scary days
I'm lucky, they had me on a leash
Exposing, sometimes you frighten me

And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had

I'm loathing most of your history
Hesitation, but then you siphon me
Your potential, well I'll indulge in that
Violent timing explains the aftermath

And it's too bad you're so sad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's so sad, it's too bad
Maybe I can make you feel better
Oh maybe I'm supposed to make you feel better

I want to comfort you

Unlike you I had it easy
You're dark blue
Stained from previous days

And you're so sad
It's too bad
I wish you could have had what I had
And it's too bad you're so sad
Maybe I can make you feel better

I'm sorry

My Interpretation:To me it sounds like she's breaking up with someone, but reluctantly. She feels she has to for some reason, but she feels bad because he's sad about it. She wants to comfort him but if she does that then she might fall back in love. She wishes it was him breaking up with her so she didn't feel as bad, hence the line 'I wish you could of had what I had'.

General Comment:Wow, I really never saw this song the way other people see it. I had such a clear interpretation of it, so it's interesting to see all these perspectives.

That being said, I strongly feel it's not about a friendship. It's about a relationship. It's about growing apart from your lover, but still WANTING to be in love with them, but realizing that the love is gone. She said "It's too bad you're so sad, I wish you could have had what I had.." This, to me, means that Gwen was happy in the relationship. She wishes that her lover saw their relationship SHE sees it; blissful, happy. But he could only see the bad, was complicated ("You've had some scary days" -- meaning this person battled some scary thoughts about Gwen, their relationship, etc.) and so forth. That's why Gwen apologizes at the end. The last line "I'm Sorry" is.... I mean... no words. A truly beautiful way to end the song. She wants her lover to know that she's sorry, and she hopes that they know it's not her fault that the love disappeared.

Sorry if that makes no sense. It makes too much sense to me. I can't see this song any other way. But everyone has their unique interpretation which gives the song a personal meaning to them.

General Comment:I personally think this song is Gwen's way of telling Gavin how sad and outraged she feels that he didn't have the safe, drug-free past she previously viewed as the norm. I see a huge similarity between this and Cellophane Boy(sorry if misspelled). It's more touching and personal. It shows her support and love for him . I think it's beautiful. It allows her vulnerability to show and is a terrific explanation for why their love and marriage has lasted though good and bad times, when others crumbled so easily.

My Interpretation:I've always thought of this song when I make a new friend when I was younger. I had a very rough childhood and as a result was depressed for a long time. Often times I felt like the person I would confess my childhood too would feel so overwhelmed by what I'd been through that they would need to distance themselves. They wanted to help but at the same time they needed to accept the fact that not everyone had an easy upbringing and deal with the outrage of what can happen to people.

On a days when I just felt so out of sync with all of my school age friends I listened to this song and tried to see myself and my history from their point of view.

(I'm tired from exploring you. I'm sorry you've had some scary days.) It's emotionally draining to hear all you've been through. I feel so bad that you had to go through it.

(I'm lucky, they had me on a leash, Exposing, sometimes you frighten me.) I wasn't in the same place as you. I was within the norm. I was safe. I didn't know this stuff really happened. It's never been this real for me. If it could happen to you, it could happen to so many people. It scares me. The world isn't as safe as I thought it was.

(And it's too bad you're so sad. I wish you could have had what I had.) It's not fair. You should have had the same opportunity as me.

(I'm loathing most of your history. Hesitation, but then you siphon me.) Outrage at what has happened and more emotional drainage. It's hard to know what to do or how to deal with this.

(Your potential, well I'll indulge in that.) I'll try to point out how far you've come despite the hardships. I want to praise you for getting to where you are. I wish there was more I could do.

(Violent timing explains the aftermath.) I can understand how you are upset and why you are hurt.

General Comment:to siphon is to take liquid out of something (like siphoning gas out of a car) through a tube (which is the object itself, a siphon.) I suppose she's meaning that he takes something out of her, obviously not literally (although I suppose an exhange of bodily fluids isn't out of the question,) but as she hesitates, he takes things out of her, perhaps emotionally, and she can no longer hesitate because he's already taken it.

General Comment:I think it's about someone who was more than a friend, though it coulddddd be about a friend or more than a friend.

"I'm loathing most of your history
Hesitation, but then you siphon me
Your potential, well I'll indulge in that
Violent timing explains the aftermath "

The whole violent timing line leads me to believe its about a love rather than a friend. I just think the connotation of "aftermath" is too strong to be just the end of a friendship...
