Once was a magical place
Over time it was lost
Price increased the cost
Now the fortune of the kingdom
Is locked up in its dungeon vaults
The castle floor lies in traps
With coiled wires set back
Decoyed by old cheese Now the drawbridge has been lifted
As the millions
They drop to their knees

They pay homage to a king
Whose dreams are buried
In their minds
His tears are frozen stiff
Icicles drip from his eyes

The cold wind blows as it snows
On those who fight to get in
On heads that are small
Disillusioned as they enter
They're unaware what's
Behind castle walls
But now it's written in stone
The king has been overthrown
By jesterly fools
And the power of the people
Shall come to believe they do rule

They pay homage to a king
Whose dreams are buried
In their minds
His tears are frozen stiff
Icicles drip from his eyes
Welcome to the tragic kingdom
Cornfields of popcorn
Have yet to spring open

Have they lost their heads
Or are they all blind mice
We've heard all their stories
One too many times
Hypnotized by fireflies
That glow in the dark
Midgets that disguise themselves
As tiny little dwarfs
The parade that's electrical
It serves no real purpose
Just takes up a lot of juice
Just to impress us

Welcome to the tragic kingdom
Cornfields of popcorn
Have yet to spring open

General Comment:I LOVE this song !!!!

This is what I've found out what the song means, from here - en.allexperts.com/q/Doubt-538/…

Well if you were looking for a hidden meaning in a song, this wasn't the best choice. It's kind of straight forward. I have lived in Anaheim for over 10 years and currently do and many people in this area (including No Doubt in this song) consider Disneyland to be a monster organization. Disney calls themself "The Magic Kingdom" hence why this song is called "Tragic Kingdom". It's kind of showing the unseen side of Disneyland.

    "Once was a magical place
Over time it was lost" - this means that Disneyland when it started was a cool place, but over the years it lost it's magic.

    "Price increased the cost
Now the fortune of the kingdom
Is locked up in its dungeon vaults" - this means that the prices of tickets increased over the years to an incredible amount ($40 a ticket to each Disneyland park which there are 2 of)....and now Disney is hording their money and not spending it to improve things for people who visit.

"They pay homage to a king
    Whose dreams are buried
    In their minds
    His tears are frozen stiff
Icicles drip from his eyes" - The king is Mickey Mouse in this. Mickey's "life" including his dreams like in Fantasia are buried in our minds because most people have saw these movies. Mickey is referred to be cold hearted as well.

    "disillusioned as they enter
    They're unaware what's
Behind castle walls" - this refers to the people who aren't aware of Disneylands dark side.

    "Welcome to the tragic kingdom
    Cornfields of popcorn
Have yet to spring open" - the cornfields of popcorn refers to it being a touristy type of place

    "Have they lost their heads
Or are they just all blind mice" - this refers to the tourists of Disneyland who don't see what's going on

    "We've heard all their stories
One too many times" - poeple in the local area of Disneyland have all heard the horror stories of Disneyland

    "Hypnotized by fireflies
that glow in the dark" - this is refering to the sparkling lights all around

    "Midgets that disguise themselves
As tiny little dwarfs" - this is refering to the people who dress up as the 7 Dwarfs

    "The parade that's electrical
    It serves no real purpose
Just takes up a lot of juice
Just to impress us" - and finally this refers to the Electtrical Light Parade of Disneyland.

Being a reseident of Anaheim for so long, people in the area become resentful of Disneyland since it's always trying to buy the whole city and taking over small local mom and popl businesses. It's not the cool place that tourists see, but it's a money hungry corporation that the local residents see.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Daniel M.

    It's quite poweful stuff !!
and Eric Stefani (the writer) of the song did say (some where on his FaceBook) something a long the lines of "that horrible song I wrote about Disneyland". LOL :P

General Comment:I know that No Doubt did not intend on this being their meaning to there song or was the song base off this, but if anybody out there is history freak, it kind of tells the story of the French Revolution, at least the beginngs. This song helped me knid of understand the revolution in genral terms, sorry if this seems random.

General Comment:I always thought this was about America itself, and how it had become so immersed in capitalism. DisneyLand is just a specific manifestation of a greater problem.

"Once was a magical place Over time it was lost Price increased the cost" it used to be very magical in the beginning walt had a great plan and a wonderful dream a place to escape reality he never wanted it be expensive either he wanted the average dude to be able to take his family there and have fun but thats all over now ppl have to sell their souls and first born to go i would have NEVER been able to go if i didnt work there and go for free (oh but trust me i pay...) i see what ppl go in and out everyday theyre either pretty wealthy or someone who has to work the rest of theyre life to pay of the debt they have on some credit card for going or they save theyre whole lives just to go once and the price just keeps goin up and up ive only worked there a lil over 2 yrs and already ive seen it rise atleast 3 times it makes me sick.. the place is ruined to they dont keep it nice like they should good thing most ppl dont really pay attention or theyd notice the paint chipping off everywhere rusty gates the gum all inside the mansion thats been sitting there for who knows how long and so much more but no instead i hear from our guests all the time "oh this place is beautiful and so clean" yea ooookay if you say so...poor walt...ok next... i like this one "On those who fight to get in On heads that are small Disillusioned As they enter They're unaware what's Behind castle walls" OMG i used to work at the turnstiles and i used to see everyday how messy it gets when the gates first open in the morning talk about a "fight" ive always thought of it like a stampede and as we all know stampedes are very dangerous ppl run each other over and push and alotta times get into fist fights all racing to get to the rides "first" haha ppl are so strange and then most have absolutely no clue whats really goin on "behind castle walls" and i wont say its my dirty lil secret MWAHAHAhaha dont wanna kill the "magic" more than i already am... but ppl are def easily blinded and distracted...another "By jesterly fools" one word..EISNER(and a few others) he was brought in to help "turn the company around" after walt died all that ass did was fuck it up more him and all the share holders and every one else who fucked that place can go to hell theres plenty of other money/power hungry assholes for them to be friends with there ok.... enough angry ranting for me more explaining... and ofcourse we all know what this means..."Have they lost their heads Or are they just all blind mice We've heard all their stories One too many times Hypnotized by fireflies That glow in the darkMidgets that disguise themselves As tiny little dwarfs The parade that's electrical It serves no real purposeJust takes up a lot of juiceJust to impress us" i do believe alot of you ppl all around the world have lost your heads your crazy and alot are stupid and oh so very blind but thats how your supposed to be says the boss blind as a flippin bat and everyones so very easily amused (especially while they rob you like crazy) so easily distracted with the fireworks the parades the shiny glowing swords n things they sell on carts and so on and i dont think i need to explain the whole midget thing well ill look on the brightside atleast part of walts dream is alive it def takes you from reality to a place of fantasy but is it the right fantasy? and whose fantasy? who knows all i know is i LOVE LOVE LOVE this song and no doubt just thought id throw in my opinion....

General Comment:Um...has no one mentioned their shout out to the fact that there's a legend that Walt Disney is buried under CalArts (the animation school), his body frozen in ice so that one day he can be unfrozen and walk the earth again? Which is lol not true, but a very popular tale. Hence the frozen tears icicles dripping from his eyes.

Also I like the Star Wars theme saxophone at the end.

General Comment:They still have the "Remain seated please" bit at the beginning from the Matterhorn Mountain ride. :] as far as i'm aware anyways. But yeah, clearly Disneyland..

"The castle floor lies in traps
    With coiled wires set back
    Decoyed by old cheese"

cheese, traps = mouse. Mickey Mouse. the Mouse that started it all.

i know the feeling, i live in fullerton, which is right next to anaheim. >.

General Comment:So I think that this song has a dual meaning. Yes I think it does talk about Disneyland (or Disneyworld if you're from the Eastern USA), but it could also be about our country. The US is a Tragic Kingdom.

It could also describe DarKastle at Busch Gardens Europe as well (as stated by the_journalist)
