Lyrics for Ashes in the Fall as interpreted by piesupreme

Ashes in the Fall Lyrics
A mass of hands press on the market window
Ghosts of progress
Dressed in slow death
Feeding on hunger
And glaring through the promise
Upon the food that rots slowly in the aisle
A mass of nameless at the oasis
That hides the graves beneath the masters hill
Buried for drinking
The rivers water
While shackled to the line
At the empty well

This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground

Listen to the fascist sing
Take hope here
War is elsewhere
You were chosen
This is god's land
Soon well be free
Of blot and mixture
Seeds planted by our
Forefathers hand

A mass of promises
Begin to rupture
Like the pockets
Of the new world kings
Like swollen stomachs
In Appalachia
Like the priests that fuck you
As they whisper holy things
A mass of tears have transformed to stones now
Sharpened on suffering
Woven into slings
Hope lies in the rubble of this rich fortress
Taking today what tomorrow never brings

This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over new ground

Aint it funny how the factorys doors close
Round the time that the school doors close
Round the time that the doors of the jail cells
Open up to greet you like the reaper
Aint it funny how the factorys doors close
Round the time that the school doors close
Round the time that a hundred thousand jail cells
Open up to greet you like the reaper

This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground

Like ashes in the fall

This is probably my favorite Rage song ever. The metaphors and imagry Zack uses are exremely powerful. Just some more analyzing:

"Like swollen stomachs
In Appalachia"
Applachia being the poorest area of the United States, located in the general area of the mountains in name. Trust me, I've been there... if you've ever wondered where cars from thirty years ago and old school busses go to die, its in the front yards of Appalachia.

"Like the priests that fuck you
As they whisper holy things"
This is probably supposed to just mean mislead or at worst betray, this song was written before the whole widespread accusations of Catholic priests for molesting members of their parishes. Makes it more poingent after all that though.

"A mass of tears have transformed to stones now
Sharpened on suffering
Woven into slings
Hope lies in the rubble of this rich fortress
Taking today what tomorrow never brings "
This is pretty straightforward, and probably my favorite part of the song. Just saying that the pain and suffering have caused a revolution.

When I turn this song up pretty loud with headphones on and implement certain buttons on the equalizer, I can achieve "audioRGASM" by listening to it. God, it feels good.

Zack wants to shoot you in the face and burn down your bank you cracker bastards. You suck.

WE didn't kill any of your ancestors. our ancestors did. actually, my ancestors weren't even in this country at the time. my family didn't come to this country until just before WWII. and i'm sure it's the same for a lot of people. your statements are extremely racist and offensive. you assume that because we are white, we are somehow responsible for the deaths of your ancestors? that makes absolutely no sense. that's like a native american of another tribe holding you responsible for your ancestor's rape and pillage of their ancestor's tribe hundreds of years ago.

I'm going to attempt to be The Negotiator here. I am mostly of "Cracka' Blood" (it's not "Cracker" in the South, at least where I currently live) but I grew up around an Indian Reservation and my mom taught at a tribal college. I was exposed to a lot of reservation culture and the horrible history and the difficulty of holding onto tradition in a nation of assimilation. True, a lot (most) of Native Americans do not like the white man, and not just our ancestors. Native Americans cannot get good credit b/c they don't own their land (Feds do, it is in trust to the people) and their funds are controlled by the Federal Government. so basically they are in a trap that is trying to be fixed by putting casinos on reservations to make money. So basically they have to sell out to capitalism to make it. Native Americans are more oppressed and poor than any other group of people in this country (Pine Ridge Reservation is the poorest place in U.S.--South Dakota). So, adamizer has a point, but anger is a defense mechanism to try to make an argument seem more right. Nothingface555 also uses the classic WhitePeople defense mechanism "we didn't... our ancestors...", relieving blame so the issue can be ignored and hushed up. RATM fans, focus! Let us not fight over these issues. RATM is so right on, and they might hate me, but that is their right. We all really need to take messages like RATM's and listen and do something instead of trying to pinpoint blame. Use their words to look inside and then take these words as your actions outside. We are hypocrites living in a hypocritical "Evil Empire"; as we watch TV and avoid reading, reflecting, critical thought, and action, We as a people need to use our thoughts and voices to make a difference instead of getting lazy and apathetic. That is what 'They' want. And I think that is part of RATM's worldview. They are the underdogs, speaking up for the underdog, letting it be known that we are miseducated and need to read on past the bold words, the big dates, etc. That underdogs are gathering, and have a voice, an educated voice, and are waiting for the time when the powers get lazy, lose touch, and lose the will of the people. This is happening now, w/corporations and unions basically buying politicians opinions while we as citizens are losing voice and power. This is similar to the history of Rome (look at Radiohead's "You and Whose Army" as they are trying to state that we are repeating this history, then read 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' as the similarities to U.S. History should make you aware of the theory concerning cycles of govt.--democracy then republic then oligarchy then kingdom/dictatorship/facism/civil war struggle--as this is a true theorem in the study of history) and 1700s France b4 the revolution. This will happen again. This is happening NOW--period of quiet (like pre-1914) in the world w/peace and trade being broken by extremists coming to power everywhere b/c of power struggles caused by economic woes (see Argentina/Africa/Phillipines/Algeria/Austria/Malaysia/etc.).A war is imminent and will create a shift in power. Read about the Spanish Civil War and the brief period of rule by so-called 'Anarchists' trying to live a different way. We can do this. And we can gather together our collective power and find a new way to live. We are all friends here; we cannot fight. This is what they want. Let's make them sweat instead of each other.

If you are sad about RATM's split and need a replacement item to challenge your worldview, pick up a copy of 'Adbusters' magazine. I highly recommend it. It is the only magazine that makes me think and the only one for which I have a subscription. No matter what you believe you will enjoy it.

Actually the members of RATM rarely talked out side of making music. They didn't get along with each other very well. I highly doubt that he hated white people. He was a smarter man than that.

This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground

In other words, history WILL repeat itself just as droutkast said. This war with Iraq just might be the breaking point, it's coming, just know when it is.

We ned to realize that we really can't just sit here and be bossed around, we HAVE TO STAND UP! We can't let down or they have won. They want us to lie down, and take the punches, because they need the money. Money is our enemy, not Iraq, and as soon as the American people realize this, it will have already have been too late.

I think that sertain ones of you need to chill out here, and pull your head out of your butts. I don't see how you could think that the band members didn't talk oustide of playing music. There really isn't anyway that they could have lasted as a band as long as they did you jackass. Plus there was an interview of them and they all got along fairly well, granted they weren't the best of freinds. But they got along.
Well, to me the song kinda sounds like it is how everyrthing wil get poured back wounds, onto new things.

Yeah. Iv'e heard that he misteriously disapeared all the time when they were writing/recording stuff without telling anyone. I think I heard one of them said they havew wrote more stuff in one month with Chris cornnel in Audioslave than they had the entire time with Zach. Zach's a cool guy but he doesnt sound like hes very presistent for his music. He is supost to be writing his album with DJ Shadow and some other producers. But Shadow said on his website that he was finsihing up with him and was supost to go for a session with someone else the next day but he never showed up. His been missing since. I hope hes ok.

This song is about the effects of fascism and how fascism can sort of brainwash people to follow their leaders. It worked extremely well with Hitler as Germany was in ruins after WWI. They were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles which said that they had to accept 100% responsibility for the war and they had to pay for it as well. So their country went into economic depression and their government was in shambles. Then here comes Hitler and he rallies the people by kindling the homeland spirit and spewing nationalistic slogans and by doing this he brainwashed every German citizen to follow his lead, because they saw him as a savior.

Hitler got them to think that their country was chosen by God and that there was this certain "devine race" that they were blessed with.
This is the type of thing that Zach is talking about in the lyrics: "Listen to the fascist sing

You were chosen
This is god's land
Soon well be free
Of blot and mixture"

its funny cuz tommy was really black, and zack wasnt black. he was mexican. but besides that, the entire point of this song and all of their other songs is not to make you want to kill the people that have wronged you, but to figure out who your enemy is and make sure they cant do that shit again.

ps; does anyone know WHY rage broke up? im stumped.
