Sometimes I feel like I'm falling
Fall back again, fall back again,
Fall back again, fall back again
Oh, life it seems a struggle between
What we think what we see
I'm not going to change my ways
Just to please you or appease you
Inside a crowd, five billion proud
Willing to punch it out
Right, wrong, weak, strong
Ashes to ashes all fall down
Look around about this round
About this merry-go-round around
If at all God's gaze upon us fall
His mischievous grin, look at him

Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be swept away
Forget about being guilty,
We are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Sit awhile with TV's hungry child
Big belly swelled
Oh, for a price of a coke or a smoke
Keep alive those hungy eyes
Take a look at me, what you see in me,
Mirror look at me
Face it all, face it all again

Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that your emotions can be
Wept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, i am innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

You seek up an emotion
And our cup is overflowing
You seek up an emotion,
Sometimes your well is dry
You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you, the devil's not
Going--ha, ha

Say, say

Look at me in my fancy car
And my bank account
Oh, how I wish I could take it all down
Into my grave, I'd save
Take a look again, take a look again,
Take a look again
Everyday things change,...stay the same

Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Your emotions can be swept away
Intentions are not wicked,
Don't be tricked into thinking so
Soon we will all find our lives swept away

You seek up an emotion
And our cup is overflowing
You seek up an emotion,
Sometimes your well is dry
You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you,
The devil's not going--ha, ha
Fall back again, fall back again, fall back again...

General Comment:This song makes me feel like standing up and yelling at the world that I am a Christian and a Republican who believes we have it all wrong! This country has become so ugly with its wars, injustices to humanity, apathy, greed, and prejudices. We've so lost our way. Let's get it together and honor the goodness in ourselves and each other! Let's help one another in the kindest most humane way possible and promote evolution, too!

General Comment:I would like to personally congratulate 4T5T6T and chodmcv for being the only people who seem to actually get it. Also, I would also like to thank the rest of you for being the inspiration which enabled Dave to write this song. Rather ironic if you ask me. OPEN YOUR EYES.

Song Meaning:I am listening to this song right now, contemplating the beauty and complexity of not only the music but the lyrics... I agree that this song touches on many issues and themes and is open for various interpretations, but I think in general it speaks of the human condition.

We are emotional beings that tend to justify our emotions with intellect. We are inherently selfish and bellicose, but we are also have good intentions and experience guilt from the bad things we do. Our emotions fill us up to ecstasy and also we seek to be filled because sometimes we feel like our well is dry, so we do anything to feel satisfied, and God is looking down mischievously because He gave us this emptiness, these emotions to "Seek Up" look for higher things that can actually fulfill us like helping each other, or finding your own passion, or "emotion", and living your dream, but instead we fall back on our baser passions to try and fill a void that can only be filled by giving of yourself.

There are some interesting enigmatic lyrics like

"You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you, the devil's not
    Going--ha, ha"

This reminds me of the theme of War in Yeats' "The Second Coming". If we continue to be selfish and belligerent, our collective consciousness or "spiritus mundi" is creating a beast of war that has no reason or conscience, and this beast will fight our wars for us but when the war is over this devil is not going to leave, it would end up destroying us, because that is what this mentality is designed to do. and I think that is an ironic laugh at the end...

so it is the human condition we must fix, to start look at yourself in the mirror and understand that if you realize it is only emotions sometime that guides our action, we can seek up higher emotions: the feeling you get after an act of generosity, and the bittersweet symphony of feelings when you follow whatever dream/passion/emotion that you've always wanted to chase. And maybe we can turn the tide of our collective spirit into one of love and not war.

General Comment:was kind of discussed already, but any thoughts on what this means?

"You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you, the devil's not
    Going--ha, ha"

Why is the devil not laughing? Is he saying all these wars are just making the devil happy (in other words, what we are doing is evil?)

And who is the monster we are seeking up and how is he fighting the war for us? It seems to me we use religion to fight wars sometimes, but then our god isn't really fighting the war... is he?

BTW, the Some Devil Bonus Disc version of this song is actually my favorite. Try to find the some devil bonus disc online somewhere, it's all acoustic, and quite good.

General Comment:To addendum my previous comments on this song. It keeps making me think about it. This song is not so much against religion as it is pro-humanist. Dave is trying to put our trust in ourselves, in our own emotions, not to chase treasons (money, god, etc.). We are innocent, our emotions are innocent, life is short. Emotions can vary and be up and down, and we create defense mechanisms to get through life and scary times, but these things aren't evil. Very humanist ideals.

General Comment:There are quite obvious references to religion here, particularly the prevalent idea of sin (humanity's guilt). Now, Dave is a pretty outspoken atheist (do a Google search for reference). His lyrics here reflect this:

"Inside a crowd, five billion proud
    Willing to punch it out
    Right, wrong, weak, strong
Ashes to ashes all fall down"

--the absurdity of humanity, our willingness to fight over anything and everything, never realizing the fact that it is all quite trivial--we will all meet our deaths in the end ("ashes to ashes, we all fall down", "we will all find our lives swept away").

    particularly interesting are the verses:
"If at all God's gaze upon us fall
His mischievous grin, look at him"
--In other words, if God is looking down at us at all, it is with a mischievous grin (the expression of one who has done something deceptive or cruel, apparently misinterpreted by a few of you here who do not understand the meaning of this word; see merriam-webster.com/dictionary/…).

The lines "Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking...forget about being guilty we are innocent instead...Intentions are not wicked,
Don't be tricked into thinking so" -- clear references to the theme among the major religions of sin, of you and me "being guilty". Dave is saying "forget about that, it is false".

Now, the second of the two major themes here is an extension of the first: the idea that we are making a mess of life here on our planet. Our cruelty toward one another, not the least of which is the indirect harm of ignoring suffering ("TV's hungry child"), needs to stop, and indeed can stop if we are willing. He speaks of our bellicose ways, "Inside a crowd, five billion proud, willing to punch it out", "You seek up a big monster, For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you, the devil's not going"--these monsters we create through each and every war of ours will always find their way back to their creators, the ones who manifest them and urge them on.

This is a song about changing our ways as a species, about learning that this ridiculous fighting over right and wrong, your god and my god, "weak and strong" is pointless. We will all be swept away in the end. We need to learn to change the only world we have, what we have right now.

General Comment:This song is amazing, like, it combines Dave's talent of literal imagery with a message that has been heard for years but never really listened to...

Not many people remember that Dave went to school in South Africa and actually had a very patchy past with experimentation of life and its treasures, some legal, some not... This song has a few meanings to each person, another of Dave's talents, he can appeal to anyone with his words, this song is his message and I think it could almost be an apology to himself for forgetting to live at times...

    The lines:

    "Look around about this round
    About this merry-go-round around
If at all God's gaze upon us fall
His mischievous grin, look at him"

They sum up the song pretty well, instead of going round and round in the same mundane loop, step into life and live as "God" intended us to do, even if it means displeasing him, he will be grinning at the fact you're living...

It's in short, a cry to not let life pass you by...

General Comment:It is live trax vol. 1 I was thinking about.

This song... it's the most passionate dave song I've ever heard. And my second favorite. It's topped only by Pig. Which, even though Dave called it a dime a dozen, is amazing. Anyway... more people should post about this song. it deserves it. It's just that amazing.
