Lyrics for Man in the Mirror as interpreted by Mru007

Man in the Mirror Lyrics
I'm gonna make a change for once in my life
It's gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right

As I, turn up the collar on my favorite winter coat
This wind is blowing my mind
I see the kids in the streets with not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer disregard, a broken bottle top
And a one man soul
They follow each other on the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
(If you wanna make the world a better place)
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
(Take a look at yourself, and then make a change)
(Na na na, na na na, na na, na nah)

I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It's time that I realize
That there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan
Could it be really me,
pretending that they're not alone?

A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart
And a washed-out dream
(Washed-out dream)
They follow the pattern of the wind ya' see
'Cause they got no place to be
That's why I'm starting with me
(Starting with me!)

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Ooh!)
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
(If you wanna make the world a better place)
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
(Take a look at yourself, and then make a change)

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Change his ways - ooh!)
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make that..
(Take a look at yourself and then make that..)
CHANGE!

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
(Man in the mirror - Oh yeah!)
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Better change!)
No message could have been any clearer
(If you wanna make the world a better place)

(Take a look at yourself and then make the change)
(You gotta get it right, while you got the time)
('Cause when you close your heart)
You can't close your... your mind!
(Then you close your... mind!)
That man, that man, that man, that man
With the man in the mirror
(Man in the mirror, oh yeah!)
That man, that man, that man,
I'm asking him to change his ways
(Better change!)
You know... that man
No message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
(If you wanna m
ake the world a better place)
Take a look at yourself and then make the change
(Take a look at yourself and then make the change)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
Na na na, na na na, na na, na nah
(Ooooh...)
Oh no, no no...

I'm gonna make a change
It's gonna feel real good!
Come on!
(Change...)
Just lift yourself
You know
You've got to stop it,
Yourself!
(Yeah! - Make that change!)
I've got to make that change, today!
Hoo!
(Man in the mirror)
You got to
You got to not let yourself...
brother...
Hoo!
(Yeah! - Make that change!)
You know - I've got to get
that man, that man...
(Man in the mirror)
You've got to
You've got to move! Come on!
Come on!
YOu got to...
Stand up! Stand up! Stand up!
(Yeah! - Make that change)
Stand up and lift yourself, now!
(Man in the mirror)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
Aaow!
(Yeah! - Make that change!)
Gonna make that change...
come on!
You know it!
You know it!
You know it!
You know it...
(Change...)
Make that change.

I love this song and all of his other songs. Why do the best performers have to die young because they overdosed on prescription drugs? Elvis Presley is an example. Anyway, people can say whatever they want about him but they can't say that he wasn't talented. I love you, Michael! You are truly the King of Pop!

Today would have been the 51st birthday of Michael Jackson, and it got me reminiscing about the Pop Idol we lost. I'm not a huge fan of his music but there are several songs of his that a really like. This is my probably my favorite. Its got such a positive message. Change starts with yourself.

Rest in Peace Michael and Thanks for everything you gave the world...

he does not say "come on". he clearly says his trademark "cha'mon".

This song is basically saying if you want to change the world, change yourself first.

Micheal Jackson wrote most of his musaic but he did not write this track.
It was written and composed by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard.
So all these attempts to interpret what 'micheal is saying' and comments suggesting that it catches the 'essence of Micheal' are all stretching it a bit. Sorry. They are not his words.

He did make the song famous however and it is a gem example of songwriting. So simple, yet so powerful.
We will never ever forget you Micheal.

It's about being a person who has been blessed and now it is their turn to "look in the mirror" and in turn use their blessing to help others who are less fortunate. Went to the Michael Jackson Memorial service 2 days ago and it was the best and most mind blowing experience of my life. I miss you Michael We all truly do.

I love this song, obviously this song is about how people need to help the less fortunate, but they have to start with themselves before they try to help others. This song is gold. :)

I think this song means that if you want to make a difference in the world then take a look in the mirror. Change yourself because if everyone changed themselves then the whole world will eventually be changed.

I believe one of the meanings of this song is that if you want to change the problems in the world, you first must change the problems with yourself.

It's kind of like a man not being able to support himself, so how could he support a whole family?

It's about a pedophile who sees all the defenseless children in the world and decides that the time in now (1987) to build a fantasy park at his home, lure them to his bedroom, and boink as many as possible before offing himself with Demerol. Instead of just thinking about it, he looks at the potential pedophile in the mirror and decides to make the change to be an actual pedophile, especially since he then had enough money to pay anyone off if he got caught.

i am thinking that he was thinking that he has been ignoring the problem(hungey, and homeless people), and then he sees some of the people and relizes that he needs to change.(sorry if that was confusing)

so the line about seeing the kids with nothing to eat ties in with
A summer disregard,
a broken bottle top
And a one man soul
They follow each other on the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways

meaning everyone has problems and everyone doesnt know what to do about them

They follow each other on the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go

meaning they follow the same cycle like my grandfather/father example

so he is noting the problems but suggesting that everyone should sort themselves out first which may prevent the problems from occurring in the first place

I disagree slightly. I think it's about his father. From what i have read his father was an asshole to him as was his granfather to his father etc. the song is about breaking the cycle. "man in the mirror" being the fact that as he grows older he begins to resemble his father. possibly a reason for all the surgery too, like he's confusing the physical and emotional traits.

Serenity, I agree with your intepretation 100%. I would to add that this song reminds of one of Ghandi's most famous and oft-said quotes: "You must be the Change you wish to see in the World".I have No doubt that that statement was part of the
inspiration for this song.

I have to politely disagree with you on that last comment.
I don't know what sort of theories you subscribe to, but unless Michael himself came out and said he had inappropriate relations of that manor with any child, I would not believe it for a second. And I don't.

Anyway. This song is amazing. Definately a pick me up. Makes you think.

It's about him feeling guilty about touching so many kids, and he knows he should stop.

"I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love"

He's saying this because touching them makes him feel good, but he knows they don't really like it.

"Who am I to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs"

He's only thinking about his sexual needs, not theirs.
