When the fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's thunder time of year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells, new mown grass
Smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
And if you sit don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me, sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you sit don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me, sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling

General Comment:To me its about Death/Life. The exact moment when you die and what you go through. Mixed with people going to see you at church on a Sunday to see you. What you hear, feel, see and touch.

When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling (day is ending)

    Summer sunday and a year
The sound of music in my ears (forever hearing music)

    Distant bells
New mown grass smells so sweet (church bells, cutting grass on a sunday)

    By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down (happy thought while dying of a girl and getting high)

    And if you see
    Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls (I'm ghost, dont spook me)

The silver sound from a time so strange (god calling him to heaven)
    Sing to me
Sing to me (hymn in church, wants to be sung too. lonely.)

When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling (day ending)

    Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears (last things he hears and sees)

    And if you see
    Don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls (I'm a ghostt, dont spook me)

The silver sound from a time so strange (hymn in church, wants to be sung too. lonely.)
    Sing to me
    Sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is...(fades out)

General Comment:The first time i listened to this song i felt that i´d already heard it before, and i didn´t even know its name. It´s weird, the music sounds very sad, i don´t know why. It also makes High Hopes a very sad song, ´cause he´s talking from an older point of view of the same thing. Very sad. But it´s a beautiful song, the thing is that if listen to it, i get very depressed, a sort of vague and hypnotizing melancholy...

General Comment:i think it is an easy stoner cop out to say that this, like so many others are about drugs. Sure there may be line that can be taken as allusions to marijuanna or whatever, but lets give them a little more credit than that. drugs may be involved, but its a grander feeling than that at least in this case.

for me this song sings of the beginnings of love gone wrong during the summer, a season when the warmth of love seems to flourish.
beginning with "and if you hear..." and ending with that stanza "sing tome," says if you've been tempted and you've found someone else, don't tell me, just whipster it all ok just let us enjoy these lazy summer twilight moments together.
i know it sounds case specific and even jaded, but there is too much emotion screaming through the guitar in that solo, he's saying, i know it's over too, i just don't want to acknowledge it yet.

General Comment:I don't think it's about drugs, but the line "roll me up and lay me down" is definitely sounding like weed. It doesn't have to be ABOUT drugs just because it has references in it. Gah, language is a bitch.

All the imagery reminds me of childhood summers, and also of new love in the summertime. Weed could definitely be an influence in the mellow and happy tone of the song.

Probably just about a memorable summer evening filled with reminders of childhood bliss, while with a lover, maybe smoking a little pot and fooling around by the river- the part "and if you see don't make a sound..." asking for no one to be so cruel as to spoil their perfect, carefree moment,

ehh that's just my take on it.

General Comment:i love gilmore. he has a way with words like waters, but theyre sooo shallow, yet sooo deep. like some stoner went and wrote all the songs for the band. hmmmmmmm i wonder. lol
its a song about to lovers on a romantic natury date type thing. that could quite possibly involve some sort of substance use. like a hippie deelio goin.

General Comment:This song is about dying. The sun is falling symbolizes the end of your life. Evening birds... distant bells. And if you, are there to witness my end, then sing me to sleep.

I've listened to this song so many times that has- got to be it.
