The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
a man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers
but awakes to a morning with no reason for waking

He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
in his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
he's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, It's not enough

His blood has frozen & curled with fright
his knees have trembled & given way in the night
his hand has weakened at the moment of truth
his step has faltered

One world, one soul
Time pass, the river roll

And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
and silent replies that swirl invitation
flow dark and troubled to any oily sea
a grim intimation of what is to be

There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
and there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
and silence that speaks so much louder than words
of promises broken.

General Comment:I think this song is about the ruthless damage we've been doing to the environment. In future the lush green fields and the beauty of nature will be vanished and this is what we all will feel

General Comment:The reason of Pink Floyd not having reached nº #1 or #2 in my personal ranking as a band is their costume to look always at the empty part of the glass. Moreso, Gilmour said in an interview around 1987 that with Roger Waters the band's lyrics were always sad and gloom but with this record they had an optimistic and vital message. But look at the conclusion...

    Song Meaning:In my opinion;
This song is about a man suffering depression due to severe loss who is about to commit suicide via means of drowning himself.

'flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
of grim intimation of what is to be'

Think that line pretty much sums it up.
And I will add that this is one of my greatest songs of all time and have listened to it a thousand times since getting Delicate Sound of Thunder at the age of 5 (and I'm now 27). It is one of Gilmour's best lyrically and musically - and anyone who says that Gilmour can't write lyrics just as meaningful/powerful as Roger Waters does not know what they are talking about :-)

General Comment:shaown, I think it's basically about being stuck in the past. It's about nostalgia and regrets, pining for your youth, whilst with every moment time is passing you by.

General Comment:Silence that speaks so much louder than words. When somehting isn't ok you cant always tell by the way somebody talks you can tell by how they dont, the connection is failing and they are not getting through. Theres "Nobody Home" These have to be my favorite lyrics in this song. The music is not exactly my favorite but its cool. it'll be the perfect song for somebody else.

General Comment:the first line of the song " the sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land" is taken from John Steinbeck's "The Grape of Wrath"
and according to Gilmour this song is his greater lyrical effort even if he doesen't seem to think that it's the best he's ever written.
I haven't read Steinbeck's book but maybe the whole song was inspired by it.
Anyway IMHO it's a beautiful song, except for the chorus.

General Comment:Honestly, while the music is decent, Gilmour's lyrics never really made the cut. This, in my opinion, is one of his few songs that chart with other Floyd material (along with High Hopes). The rest, of course, is good; but when I listen to AMLOR or TDB, I hear regualr music, not Floyd.

General Comment:Does it has something to do with "High hopes"? Both songs talks about (i think) the same scenery, for example in "high hopes" the grass which was greener, the endless river, and here in "sorrow" it may be talking about the person who is talking about the things we hear in "high hopes" :

"a man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers"
"He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise"
"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication"

    what do you think?

General Comment:One of Gilmour's best compositions. But, as it is with almost every other Pink Floyd song, in my opinion, the sound is not what it should be on the album. On live, on the other hand, it shines like the most. That's probably because I grew up listening to Delicate Sound of Thunder, so I got so used to the open, ambient, live sound, that the suppressed studio one is, well, "weak".

Grind838, the answer to your question is also there, on Delicate Sound of Thunder, try it.

The meaning, well, the title and the sound is pretty self explanatory, even if you don't understand one word of it, you'll get the feeling. Gilmour says a lot more with his guitar than with words anyway. But still "and silence that speaks so much louder than words
of promises broken" is beautifully poetic.

One of the greatest songs ever, and one that got me into the music in a very early stage of my life. My sincere thanks to David Gilmour for that.
