Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
You brought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you
Know you're nobody's fool,
So welcome to the machine.

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star,
He played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar.
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the Machine.

My Interpretation:The dark murmur sound of a fan in the intro or some kind of force field really starts off the cold intentions of this song. An older more respectful person in a position of power is introducing a new college to his "organization". Where have you been (Why did it take you so long to realize, the meaning of it all?) Welcome to this new way of life. We will tell you what to dream."Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been". (You were groomed for this your just a pawn/a patsy, welcome to our machine) The song is about being showered in material objects at the expense to sell your soul to the "machine" which could manifest into anything Society, corporations, religion. Convinced we are only here for ourselves. Its just a selfish, pleasurable experience for most of us but the fear of Death and the unknown freezes us into so much anxiety, materialism is the only answer "welcome to the machine".

General Comment:It refers to popular culture. The machine is referring to society telling them what to believe, write and think. Loss of free will and free thought. Look at the image from The Wall of a school teacher dumping children into a school house and they come out as processed meat. Thoughtless drones shaped by societies will. Same concept applies here.

My Interpretation:I think it's about the nature of our wants and desires. the machine is society, our society. We are raised to be good, we grow out of it and we strive for success (whatever that means).

Welcome to the machine could also have said Welcome to the world or something.

The lyrics make sense as if read by a single voice, a person who is very aware of where you came from and what you're going into with an unspoken reason why you're going there. We know where you've been (you're all the same) we told you what to dream (we dangle the carrot).

the scouting for boys is probably a reference to the boy scouts handbook. along with the line that proceeded it implied they did what they were told for a while. The rebellion thing with the guitar probably means they got sick of it and wanted independence - so welcome to the world!

The second verse is talking to their motivation.

i wouldn't be surprised if there was a scrapped third verse, talking about how they either got chewed up, or became part of the clockwork of the machine.

General Comment:To me, "the machine" could be referring to the illuminati controlling the music industry or maybe it could be relating to a mind control program. "It's all right we told you what to dream" could be a way of describing the kind of control and power they have over their subjects as illuminati puppets/slaves.

General Comment:I agree that this song is about our society and our life, we all want to be someone big but in the end most of all end up with average life. And i dont understand this part

    He played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar.
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.

he ? is he imaginary presonality or someone real ?

General Comment:Will admit I didn't read through 6 pages of comments.. but the line "Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'." means what?

I'm probably way off basis, but is it military related?

    -Provided with toys(guns)
    -scouting for boys(recruiting or draft??)

..and all that ties into the machine controlling your life and all that good stuff

Makes sense to me haha. but if anyone else would care to confirm or enlighten me?

General Comment:My take on this song: the protagonist, if you want to call him that, has been molded by society. They essentially told him to be a rock star. Society molds us all. I'm not sure if this is as much about the music industry as Have a Cigar.
