Lyrics for Astronomy Domine as interpreted by Demau Senae

Astronomy Domine Lyrics
Lime and limpid green, a second scene
A fight between the blue you once knew.
Floating down, the sound resounds
Around the icy waters underground.
Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania.
Neptune, Titan, Stars can frighten.

Blinding signs flap
Flicker, flicker, flicker blam. Pow, pow.
Stairway scare, Dan Dare who's there?
Lime and limpid green, the sounds around the icy waters under
Lime and limpid green, the sounds around the icy waters underground

The lyrics, like many of those from acid-inspired songs, are largely a rhythm device. The meaning of the song is in the guitar line. Dave Gilmour's live version (Ummagumma) is technically exquisite, but doesn't transmit Syd's original ideas. This, along with A Saucerful of Secrets, gives me 'bad' memories sometimes; remnants of a misspent youth!

This Song gives the feeling of space travel, and the lyrics describe what you are seeing. At the beginning their is a countdown then the song takes off, then he's describing the earth.

as in so many acid-period Floyd songs the titles and lyrics have either oblique, or else little to no meanings and are there simply to add texture

Flicker, flicker, flicker blam. Pow, pow - here comes the Quantum universe - sharp right, down the stairs and under the sea. Easy as peas (as long as your not a fish).

craigus's corrected lyrics are way better than the ones originally posted, but isn't the ending "the sound surrounds the icy waters underground" as in the orignal posting? That's what I hear in the song, anyway.

I heard that it was about one of Syd's first lsd trips. During this trip, he created a universe out of a bowl of fruit. Then, someone came along, and ate a part of this bowl of fruit. After that, his universe collapsed.

I think it's very hard to describe the meaning of this song exactly. Like all of the early-period Floyd songs, it's very hard for us to guess what was going through Syd's mind at the time of writing. Sure it's nice to try, but only Syd can understand, really.

This song is amazing..maybe my favorite off of Piper...The version of this song on Ummagumma is amazing. It does differ greatly however, from Syd's original. I like Syd's singing better than David's ad I think (although David became much better than Syd) there guitars are both very good and equal. I have found that Syd uses minamilist guitar...he does'nt play all that much in songs, making it special when he does. I like the drumming in the live version becase theres much more of it, like a semi steady ride instead of just toms and the occasional crash-thats prob cause im a drummer though...Anyways great song, it was pointing towards the direction which they were going (spacey enviornmental themes, with hushed and mysterious singing).

I agree with seashellz. This song is mostly about the distorted sounds, visions, and thoughts that one receives off of an acid-trip. While it's interesting and unique, it lacked the lyrical meaning of later Floyd albums/songs.

i think there is meaning to the lyrics, but im guessing it was acid inspired, i think that the main idea of piper of the gates of dawn wasnt spectacular lyrics as much as apropriate to the vibe. i think they were sucessful.

Syd Barrett's Floyd was extremely different from what Floyd would come to be. By that measure, I find it unfair to compare the two stages, and I really prefer to think of Piper as having been produced by a different band than Dark Side of the Moon.

This is the best Barrett song. Who knows what it's about. It depends, like many Floyd songs, on your mood. That's what makes PF so good. Through all of it's stages.

Syd Barrett and the early Pink Floyd were the forerunners of the underground progressive/psychedelic movement in Britain in the mid to late sixties. Maybe Syd wasn't aware of it, but he created a song that perfectly organized this idea with Astronomy Domine. Everything about this hallucinogenic composition reflects (perhaps unwittingly) the underground music scene at the time and the early Pink Floyd's important place in it. I think the lyrics were indeed penned with a certain concept in mind, maybe not one as compelling as my theory above, but I really don't believe that they were accidental...maybe it was a premeditated perfect mistake executed with what Waters calls "random precision." No one can say for sure.
