Lyrics for Comfortably Numb as interpreted by Demau Senae

Comfortably Numb Lyrics
Hello? Hello? Hello?

Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more, ah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

I read several of the interpretations and I started to believe that my initial belief was wrong, maybe "comfortably numb" isn't about drugs at all. Then I listened to it again and these lines just stuck:
"There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are coming through in waves"
Those are the only lines that I really can only see as drugs of some kind, heroin sounds perfect to me. As always, no interpretation is wrong, and none is right. Just my opinion...

Put Quite Plainly- this is how the song ties into the storyline of the Wall...

' In the original scenario for the making of the album there were people banging on the door going 'Come on, it's time to go.' The idea is that they come to get him to take him to the show and he's in no state, so they get a doctor in so that they can actually get him standing up and wheel him out...and wheel him on stage.'

and this is the real life experience of Roger Waters' that inspired it...

'I had one guy (a doctor) once who thought I'd got food poisioning for an upset stomach. And he thought I had stomach cramps...he wasn't listening to me at all either. In fact, I discovered later on that I had hepatitis. He gave me this tranquilizer, it was in Philadelphia, and boy that was the longest two hours of my life. Trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm. If he'd just left me alone, the pain I could have handled. It was no sweat. I could hardly lift my arms or move any of my limbs. God knows what he gave me, but it was some very heavy muscle relaxant.'

-both quotes by Roger Waters

hope this clears it all up... this is really all there is to it... pretty simple

**oh yeah, btw, that whole being pushed onstage while on muscle relaxers part doesn't sound too nice does it, certainly not comfortable. and this, if nothing else should make it easy to understand that the meaning of 'Comforatably Numb' isn't about a happy drug experience***

this is either about drugs or an injection of anaesthetic, but I'm not totally sure which.

i can relate to the lyrics about childhood illness, i had the worst fever i've had, a hallucinogenic fever where my 'hands felt like two balloons' and i was 'coming through in waves' which is what i relate to in this song, but what eqb has said sums it up really the thing is how did Waters get hepatitis? drugs i'd expect.

i personally think this song is about someone o'ding it gives off the trippy vibe, in the lines, 'your lips move but i cant hear what you say' it seems that he is o'ding and can no longer hear. p.s pink floyd ruuuuule!!!

from the first time I heard Pink Floyd (via Pulse) I have always admired the way there music is "art". and true art, few rock bands can resemble art in such a fashion. there are some: led zeppelin, tool, smashing pumpkins to name a few, but alot of music nowadays seem to push away from the whole art idea, and especialy "creative art" which is the genre music falls into. aside from that, this song has the #1 guitar solo of all time in my opinion, which is just a element of this master piece. can I also say that David Gilmour is the greatest lead guitarist to date, and while he might not be the most skillful, he is definately the most emotive and soulful. Inspiration is an understatement.

I feel this song is about some sort of injected drug.
How you "may feel a little sick" and spacey. The part about when he was a child could be that whole your-life-flashes-before-your-eyes-before-you-die thing.
Because that crap can be like a near-death experience.
But I personally have seen the effects of injected drugs and I would say this song describes it pretty damn well...

This song means so much to me.
Pink floyd means so much to me.

I've loved this song for years. Yeah the song is clearly about IV heroin use, that's made clear by the obvious lyrics and from my own use of the drug IV.

Somepeople may have the perception that this song captures the drug use very well. But that doesn't matter 'cause this is an awesome song... speaking 'bout the time when someone looses all his emotions and senses and becomes "Comfortably Numb". Life is full of ups 'n downs & it's no bed of roses... so at one point of time i was totally able to relate to this song. It's Heals me from all the anger, distress, pain & discomfort. I rate this song to be 9.2/10. [EXCELLENT].

The song is a conversation between a Doctor for the band, and a performer who has achieved his childhood dreams, and has lost the will to perform any further.

In this song, Pink's about to go onstage, but due to his breakdown he's unable to go on. His band calls in a doctor that gives him some drugs that makes him "comfortably numb". However, the drugs also make him hallucinate, leading into the next song, "The Show Must Go On".

Ok, this is why David Gilmor is god. He makes the lyrics soo vague so everybody can put the lyrics into there own simple words and own simple meanings so it sounds like they wrote the song based on you. thats all, just give this and every pink floyd song your own meaning

This song actualy doesn't have anything to do with heroine, it's about the protagonist of The Wall who suddenly falls very ill mentally and physicaly and can't even get up from his chair to go on stage to perform, so his managers call some sort of doctor (who I think is speaking in the first and third verses) who "pricks" Pink's arm with an injection so he can feel better. Of course that injection must have had some nasty stuff in because Pink then suffers from side effets and his show recalls that of a facsist dictator. The "comfortably numb" feeling is just his fever where he can't move and doesn't want to.

Oh and that solo by David Gilmour is soooooooooo amazing.

Mentioned below one of the first Comfortably Numb versions, taken from “The Wall Under Construction”. Thankfully lyrics like “ Listen, I am a physician / And I can handle your condition / Like a magician” are replaced….

Hello
Is there anybody in there
Is anybody bleeding
Is there anyone at home
Come on
I know you’re hiding
I could hear you screeming when your neighbours
Called me on the phone
Listen, I am a physician
And I can handle your condition
Like a magician
If you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

Wake up
Pull yourself together
Get out and meet new people
I’m sure they’ll understand
Gome on
Put away the shotgun
Yeah, have another blue one
Have your fingertips gone numb
Goodby
Try and see the bright side
Listen to some pop groups
Rock and roll
Go out and see some shows

Right, ive read so much on this song, and its such an amazing song. What i can get from it is, it is about drugs and a docter helping pink in the film "the wall". Me and my friend both read into this. I have Done acid and she has Done Heroin. The references i think are to drugs are "You are coming through in waves" (the feeling i got when everything went like a heat-wave), "Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying" (another experience i had whilst on Lsd). My friend can relate to "My hands felt just like two balloons" (the feeling of being really heavy). But the official meaning of "You are coming through in waves" is suppost to represent the mind, But "My hands felt just like two balloons" is a reference to a type of drug, and "pin-prick" i think, when it ties in with the movie, Pink has taken an over-dose, and the pin-prick is being given to him by the docter, most likely the drug Narcan, which is given to Heroin addicts. Even though only 1 member of pink floyd was on Lsd (roger trying it twice and not liking the 2nd time) i think pink represents Syd barrett. But yeh, this song is a combination of drugs/psychosis/feeling alone etc etc, its so depressing, yet you have to love it.

if any of you have read the book that nick mason (drummer) wrote about pink floyd, then you will realise that this song is about syd barrett having to be pumped with drugs befre every show so that he could get through the gig - well, thas what the book says

it didn't occur to me that the song was simply about drug taking. My interpretation was more in line those of with Jaspin Demothenese, luckycharm and others - ie that it is about mental illness [in Syd's case that was drug related of course]. Whatever, on top of some of the greatest instrumental efforts ever, the lyrics are something so many of us can relate to - the comfort of feeling numb rather than having to dealing with all the painful aspects of life. The link between the effect of drugs [medical or not] and the feeling of during a childhood dream [or illness / delerium?] is brilliant. It tends to make me more sad than happy but it is beautiful.
