All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

General Comment:My take of it, or at least the last part, is that its a philosophy of how the world was started.
I base that on this last lyric "And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon." so imagine the world as animals perfect in society nothing to change except for predetermined universal changes. the sun moves around year after year in perfect routine with the earth. but, here comes in the moon, now the moons a mystery it forms eclipses with the earth blocking out the sun and creating a noticeable change on the earth for inhabitants to witness. it also happens near routinely.
now the inhabitants of earth (man, people, human race, children of god, evolved monkeys
whatever word fits your artistic mind) expect this eclipse and create a counting order to
date the time it will happen and it is this counting order that changes all mind sets and
provides an imperfect society to inherit the earth. And for those who can count the most before the time occurs become the inherit of the earth , and that my friend is the dark side of the moon

General Comment:Eclipse is often paired with the song Brain Damage preceding it; on the radio, they are rarely ever played separately and almost always played together like on the album.
To me, the meaning of Eclipse builds off the meaning of the song Brain Damage, just as the whole album (being a concept album) builds off itself to form a central theme.
The song Brain Damage is a song about, well, brain damage.. or psychological disorders.. the song is a nod to Syd Barret, the original lead singer who basically went insane and the band had to kick him out. During the line in Brain Damage where it says "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon", it basically means "where the mind of the insane resides until it can reconstruct sanity, that's where I'll meet you, some day, maybe after death"
Eclipse, then, means to me that nothing is wrong in life. Everything is working just as it should, and the world only seems to be upside down due to circumstance; it will pass like clockwork.

My Opinion:Well Im not entirely sure about the songs lyrics intended meaning thats why Im reading other peoples interpretations.

One thing that seems evident to me though is that the lyrics could simply be pointing out that all things (everything under the sun) can be viewed from different perspectives.

There is obviously the dualism aspect of love/hate, good/bad etc, but if you think about it the moon only appears to eclispe the sun from earths perspective. I mean the sun is huge and during an eclipse light still beems past the earth only the world is in the shadow of our comparively tiny moon. Its the same as holding a coin in front of your retina the sun still shines around you but for a moment you cant recognise that.

So I take this to mean that you 'the observer' can choose to look at "everything under the sun as being in tune" (whether it could be classified as good or evil, light or dark) or you can choose to look at it from a perspective as if it where cast in shadow as the dark side of the moon is perpetually. And as a luna eclipse, for a brief moment, reminds us . You therefore are the judge.

Regarding the final comment: "There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark." - if you were to take away the suns light the moon would remain the same. It is as it is - the moon is in space so both sides are surrounded by darkness. The only reason we even perceive the existence of a bright side to the moon is due to the fact the sun shines on it and we can choose to oberseve that and then name it as such, but if fact it is the same both sides.

In other words you have to choose to be looking at anything in life from a particular point of view. The point of view you choose is ultimately up to you.

But in the end, we all arrive at the same destination where, there is only darkness.

My Interpretation:To me, the entire album was leading to Eclipse. Eclipse seems to be the song that ties it all together and summarizes the whole album--or life itself.

While many people here are saying it's all about life being completely meaningless, I think of it a bit different.
I think Eclipse is saying that everyone has their own fate. Each individual's life is meant to go in a certain direction and, when or if it does, you end up with a great life where everything is good in the end. But then there's the Dark Side Of The Moon. I'm seeing Eclipse as a song saying that every little detail in life is important, and depending on what decisions you make, you can end up in two places--
the Sun, or The Dark Side Of The Moon.
The Sun is the perfect life described above. You have everything you want, and you're satisfied.
But The Dark Side Of The Moon is depression, greed, jealousy, evil...Money, Time, etc.

This song is saying that everything about your life is going to be perfect in the end...in the Sun.
But it will take people forever to reach the Sun. Some people never reach the Sun.
And until you're at the Sun, you're stuck..in the Dark Side Of The Moon.

Oh and..I'm so surprised this hasn't come up much:
    The album is a loop.
Eclipse ends with the same heartbeat that Speak to Me starts with.
It's the never-ending cycle of life.

General Comment:Some listeners are just too friggin' bright. It's intimidating! Heard this song for the very first time (tonight). The more I listen to Pink Floyd the more I realize I missed out on NOT listening to them when they were hitting the charts so long ago.

    General Comment:
The Sun represents the concious waking mind, the moon is the subconcious 'darkside'. Everything in the cosmos IS perfectly in tune, its WE who are all screwed up. Since the lunar is in opposition to the solar, humanity's mind torn into two seperate poles (duality: light/dark, male/female/,good/evil) we will forever be subject to time, decay and death.

The world is ruled by symbols & signs, not words & rules- Confuscious was right. Learn to read the symbols surrounding you & EVERTYHING will begin to make sense. Seek & and you shall find

General Comment:To understand Eclipse you must interprete the album: the album reflects life as it is.

    - Breathe: First your heartbeat begins/grows, you start to breathe and you are born. You get exposed external sounds and influences (like adult's voices saying things you cannot yet understand) but you get also exposed to your mother's cares and worries ('smiles you'll give, and tears you'll cry') and good advices ('balance on the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave').
    - Time: You grow up and enter into the ratrace of society, you realize passing of time and experience first disappointments ('no-one told you when to run..') and what it means to get older ('every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time').
    - Money: The materialistic phase of your life, working and earning money, not thinking much of the greater things in life. Reflected in even so cliche music.
    - Us and them: The elderly phase of life: you have seen it all, and you feel you have done your part. You become narrowminded and start talking about 'us' and 'them'. Like many elderly people do, you retract socially in a more inner circle of close family and friends. Society as a whole becomes less important, because you realize you will not be part of it for a long time anymore.
    - Brain damage: In the next phase your brain degenerates, you become detached from the outside world and 'real' people do not see anymore what you think. You loose touch with reality, your mind starts doing its own ways, but it feels to you like the rest of the world is doing strange things ('when the band you're in starts playing different tunes'). You get locked up in an institution or an elderly home, but more importantly, you get locked up in your head, sometimes even purposely by 'making the cut' (lobotomy).
    - Eclipse: The end. Finally, all actions and apparent contradictions and conflicts in life are resolved and disappear at the point of death (=the sun is eclipsed by the moon: the night falls for your brain). Even time itself disappears ('all that is now, all that is gone, all that's to come'). At this point everything melts together and you find/realize/experience that 'everything under the sun is in tune' and that all struggles were constructs of your conscious brain). Then the heartbeat stops. You're gone...

I see no messages or judgements, or philosophies about darkness, just a tale about the phases of life. It helps me to realize what lies ahead for all of us. The Dark Side of the Moon is one of those rare works of Art where message, form and performance have come together in a perfect marriage.
