Lyrics for Brain Damage as interpreted by Demau Senae

Brain Damage Lyrics
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
the lunatics are in the hall
the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
and every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
and if there is no room upon the hill
and if your head explodes with dark forbodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me ' till I'm sane
you lock the door
and throw away the key
there's someone in my head but it's not me

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
you shout and no one seems to hear
and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Okay...I just want to say what I think this one verse thing is about. Cause my friends think I am strange for this view...but I just think they all are crazy.

"The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me ' till I'm sane
you lock the door
and throw away the key
there's someone in my head but it's not me"

Basically, the "raise the blade" and "make the change" is saying to a doctor "Hey...you're giving me a lobotomy, aren't you?" And if you don't know what a lobotomy is, look it up sometime. "You rearange me till I'm sane" is about the doctors messing with his brain mentally and physically. Very interessting...I wonder, could it be in connection with Syd?

Oh, yeah, and the last lines, basically, is just someone being locked in a room, possibly believing that a crazy person is stuck in his head.

I do like the maniacle laughter in the middle of the song. It is very fitting.

Ok..well..the concept of Dark Side of the Moon is that of the factors in everyday life which lead people to madness. I believe that "Brain Damage" is the final culmination of insanity..the factors which lead to it are discussed, and "Brain Damage" is the actual insanity as it happens.

It's about Syd. Waters said that the whole album was about Syd... well, not about him... but the themes of insanity and death (I'm not sure why death came in) were inspired by Syd (which is the whole album).

Drexial you forgot "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine On You Crazy Diomand". Those were about Syd Barrett as well.

A man's final descent into insanity. The whole album itself was posing the question "Can everyday life make you go insane?". The themes expressed in Time, Money, Us and Them, and so on all lead up to this when this normal person finally goes insane from his normal life. And for the record, I've never heard anywhere that DSotM was about Syd. Wish You Were Here was of course. All I've ever heard about this album is that the members of Pink Floyd wanted to know if everday life can make you go insane so they stopped people on the street and asked them questions, then they put them on the album. Trivia note: Paul and Linda McCartney were among those interviewed but they weren't put into the album because they thought that they sounded "too average".

the mental health system is a disgrace. give the crazy people some medication to shut them up, and just hide the problem. what the staff does not realize, is that they are only covering up the physical symptoms. have a hole in the wall? put a picture frame over it. roger waters seems to share my view on this, portraying the faults of this system with his ever present angst and sarcasm. way to go roger!

Not exactly a definition of the song, but a small tidbit on the album that originally carried this songs name. Reason for changing? Well, while the band was looking for a album cover image, they had decided upon the infamous prism scheme and went to Egypt to take pictures of what could be the largest object taking this shape. While walking through the deserts of Egypt at night, taking pictures of the pyramids, they came across some soldiers. These soldiers "mugged" the band members and roughed em up a bit. Shortly thereafter, they lied in the sand for a moment to catch their breath. I believe it was Gilmour that looked across the vast emtpy desert and stated..."It looks as if we are on the dark side of the moon". Voila...the name stuck, and Brain Damage, became "Dark Side Of The Moon".

I think you all are on the right path. No The Wall is not entirely about Syd Barret. The Wall is Roger Water's entire life. Secondly, the laughter in Brain Damage, is by a man named "Roger the Hat". He was a groupie at the time, and the band rewarded him.

Please excuse my ignorance of pink floyd and other bands of the time, but who's Syd Barrett?

Jeff, i'm not gonna be an ass. Syd was the first guitarist/vocalist of the band, before David Gilmour came in. That was when the band was more pop-oriented psychedelic rock, goofy British stuff. After taking faarrrrrrrrr too many acid trips, Syd went 'insane.' He spaced out during concerts, and that's when they got Dave to come in to cover for Syd during concerts, but eventually they just fired Barrett and he drifted off into his own reclusive world, to surface sometimes with a solo album produced by Roger or Dave.

That line "when the band you're playing in starts playing different tunes" refers to those crazy concerts with Syd playing an entirly different song.

An amazing, but creepy song. Love it, one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs(Which is saying alot, I like em all).

The whole song seems to build up to the line "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"

one of my two favorite "moon" songs, along with "man on the moon" by REM...about losing touch with somebody, in this song through madness and in "man on the moon" through death...i always get a chill when they sing (in this song) "i'll see you on the dark side of the moon" and in the other when they sing "if you believed they put a man on the moon"...

Haven't any of you heard of the Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon connection? Watch the movie with the volume down to the cd, start the cd after the MGM lion's third and final roar...

roger waters was tripped out just as much as syd was...he just went through more phases...he had his bouts with just about everything....this song...well this whole album is trippy...tell me where else you would come up with some of the things he says....and anyone in a normal state of mind would not record their album to coordinate with the Oz movie....i mean everyone has their own opinions but i feel he was definitely one tripped out person and this whole album is acid induced....

On the late-era Division Bell album, Dave Gilmour asks "Do you want me to make a daisy chain for you?" in reference to the lyrics in this early-era Floyd classic.

The line "the lunatic is on the grass" is NOT about weed. Actually, David Gilmour saw a 'keep off the grass' sign and thought to himself that anyone willing to go on the grass would be crazy. That's what inspired that particular line.
