Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave, but don't leave me
Look around, choose your own ground

Long you live and high you fly
Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be

Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun
When, at last, the work is done
Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
Balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave

thats great xkmail except syd hadn't worked on a song with floyd since a saucerful of secrets so i seriously doubt what you say is true.

Thejerk that's a very interesting idea, i suggest you pursue it further in SM.

danman, i think you are wrong.

In a way breathe is a synopsis of what the entire Dark Side of the Moon Album is about. Breathe begins with a heartbeat, suggesting life and is then parodied by the mechanical sounds of a ticking clock and the clicking of the register used in Money which connects the song thematically to Time and Money. there is a muffled conversation snippet which says something like:

voice 1: I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, over the edge, been workin my buns off

voice 2: I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us are. Hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad.

The conversation is followed by manic laughter, which along with the dialogue connects breathe to Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse. Also te first drum beat of Brain damage is reminiscient of a fading heart beat and Eclipse ends with a fading heart beat representing death whereas Breathe represents life.

Then comes even more mechanical noises and the same screaming vocals cut from Great Gig in the Sky.

And then this all gives way to the tranquility and bliss of the opening bars of breathe.

now, the lyrics of Breathe are devided into two parts.

The first part has a very innocent feel and is i feel directed to someone becoming independent, moving away from home becoming aware of all that life has in store. So maybe it's advice from a parent or something similar?

the second part is more jaded and cynical and less dreamy and represents life as the ceaseless cycle of work which is unavoidable and sucks out the joy and leaves no room for leisure "forget the sun".
