I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Crumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day, hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.

Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day, hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Oooooooooomray.
Ooooooooooooooomray.

General Comment:I've also thought this song could be about John Lennon's gnome on Sgt Pepper's cover.....Pink Floyd and Beatles were recording their albums in the same place and in the same time...U.U

General Comment:VERY PSYCHEDELIC SONG.. OF COURSE.. WE TALK ABOUT SYD!
IT`S ONE OF HIS TRIPS..FOR ME HE CREATES A "GNOMES LANGUAGE"..IF U NOTICE THE "R" SOUNDS VERY PECULIAR, AS AS BRITISH ACCENT..
IT`S GREAT THE "LOOK AT THE SKY, LOOK AT THE RIVER.." CONTEMPLATING THE NATURE..VERY INTERESTING SONG.

General Comment:It's Syd Barret's interpretation of Lord of The Rings,

    Frodo is "the Gnome"

he has a "big adventure" to destroy the ring

General Comment:If any of you know anything about Terence McKenna and DMT, he said something about this song being about the DMT experience. "The Gnome" is simply a term for the beings that exist in the DMT world. Terence called them "Self-transforming Machine Elves" they weren't elves necessarily, but that's what the word to describe them is. They're beings of light that some have encountered in DMT trips. "And then one day hurray
another way for the gnomes to say hurray" is them greeting you as you enter their world through DMT. They know of you and want to contact you through that world.

General Comment:The beginning of this song is telling us that there is more to life than your job and your bills, that the simpler things in life are better.
Then I do believe that this song goes into getting high off of drugs.

General Comment:I think this song is about Tolkien's The Hobbit.
Grimble Gromble could possibly be Bilbo who was biding his time with wine and second breakfasts in Hobbiton before he had a big adventure amidst the grass and discovered a new way to say hooray

General Comment:I'm guessing that the drug meaning is partly true, mostly because Syd did do a lot of drugs. It is either just a song about the gnome, or a song about drugs and the gnome.
Anyone thinking it has some connection to Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit, there is no doubt that this very closely resembles the Hobbit, but I think, if anything, it is a loose reference to it.
    Anyway, it's a great song.

General Comment:Its amazing. End of story, and yes it is probably about a gnome, but then again it might not be about a gnome.
