Smooth Criminal Lyrics
As he came into the window
It was the sound of a crescendo -Ta
He came into her apartment
He left the bloodstains on the carpet -Ta
She ran underneath the table
He could see she was unable -Ta
So she ran into the bedroom
She was struck down, it was her doom

Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok
Are you ok, Annie
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok
Are you ok, Annie
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok?
Are you ok, Annie?
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok, are you ok Annie?

(Annie are you ok?)
(Will you tell us that you're ok?) -Ta
(There's a sign in the window)
(That he struck you - a crescendo Annie)
(He came into your apartement)
(He left the bloodstains on the carpet)
(The you ran into the bedroom)
(You were struck down)
(It was your doom)

Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok?
Are you ok, Annie?
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok?
Are you ok, Annie?
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok?
Are you ok, Annie?
You've been hit by
You've been hit by -
a smooth criminal

So they came into the outway
It was Sunday - what a black day
Mouth to mouth resuscitation
Sounding heartbeats - intimidations

Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok
Are you ok, Annie
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok
Are you ok, Annie
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok?
Are you ok, Annie?
Annie, are you ok?
So, Annie are you ok, are you ok Annie?

(Annie are you ok?)
(Will you tell us that you're ok?)
(There's a sign in the window)
(That he struck you - a crescendo Annie)
(He came into your apartement)
(Left the bloodstains on the carpet)
(The you
ran into the bedroom)
(You were struck down)
(It was your doom)

(Annie are you ok?)
(So, Annie are you ok?)
(Are you ok Annie?)
(You've been hit by)
(You've been struck by -
a smooth criminal)

Okay, I want everybody to clear
the area right now!

Aaow!
(Annie are you ok?)
I don't know!
(Will you tell us that you're ok?)
I don't know!
(There's a sign in the window)
I don't know!
(That he struck you - a crescendo Annie)
I don't know!
(He came into your apartement)
I don't know!
(Left the bloodstains on the carpet)
I don't know why baby!
(The you ran into the bedroom)
I don't know
(You were struck down)
(It was your doom - Annie!)

(Annie are you ok?)
Dad gone it - baby!
(Will you tell us that you're ok?)
Dad gone it - baby!
(There's a sign in the window)
Dad gone it - baby!
(That he struck you - a crescendo Annie)
Hoo! Hoo!
(He came into your apartement)
Dad gone it!
(Left the bloodstains on the carpet)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
(The you ran into the bedroom)
Dad gone it!

(You were struck down)
(It was your doom - Annie!)
Aaow!!!

Hmm. I just saw "This Is It" and a realization came to me. I have no idea why I never thought of this before, but I thought that it was about the Gestapo finding Anne Frank. You know, with the whole theme about the "Annie, are you okay?" and about how she was hit by a smooth criminal. The part about Dad could reference the fact that her father was the only one living in the Annexe who survived.

I've never really been able to grasp the meaning of this song.
Although, correct me if I'm wrong, he said "That he struck you - a crescendo Annie"
a-crescendo is when music notes are gradually going higher, right?
So I think it's quite possible this song isn't about murder, but more about something musical.

ok thought about these lyrics a lot and I don't think they're like what people have been saying
I think they sound quite autobiographical
I think Annie is Michael Jackson, kind of, because the name Annie represents someone who is unconscious as dolls to practise resuscitation on are called Annie
The smooth criminal is Joe Jackson

These lyrics tell a story about something that actually happened between Michael Jackson and his father when his father was trying to teach him to keep his window closed:
As he came into the window - Joe Jackson climbed into Michael's bedroom through the window
It was the sound of a crescendo
He came into her apartment - He calls himself a her so that he can link in to Annie
He left the bloodstains on the carpet
She ran underneath the table - Michael Jackson tried to protect himself
He could see she was unable - He was just a child and he was weak and couldn't protect himself
So she ran into the bedroom
She was struck down, it was her doom - Joe Jackson beated him which he was known to do often

The Annie are you ok part represents the times when Michael Jackson would faint in fear of his father which he said he did because Annie are you ok is what you say to the resuscitation dolls.

Sounding heartbeats intimidations - Michael Jackson and his siblings were terrified of his father,
their heartbeats were audible

You've been hit by -
a smooth criminal - They were hit by their father who was a criminal considering the
amount of damage he did to his son which affected him in later
life

(Annie are you ok?)
I don't know! - I think this bit is him commenting about it now and how he feels
about it. It maybe shows that he still doesn't know if he's
recovered from incidents like this and it sounds to me like he
hasn't because he's still thinking about it.

It makes sense that Joe Jackson would be the Smooth Criminal because he did beat his children and he forced them to perform to get money but he has never been caught really for his 'crimes' making him a smooth criminal.

I don't know that that's definitely right, it justs seems quite likely to me anyway

Michael Jackson.... where do you begin..
He began so young and showed the world his talents and through his songs and dancing we have discovered a true hero of pop. He was more than the king of pop and he was not recognised for his amazing gifts enough while he was still on earth. He has taught us about his childhood and how to heal the world through his songs and his story. Never again will a singer who sings with so much feeling and who dances like its his last day on earth come again. We have seen Michael at his worst and at his best and we realise why he was the way he was.

We love you MJ and you'll always be in our hearts.
R.I.P MJ

Hold that thought, she's on the fringe of death, they're doing CPR and he's just asking if she's ok cos he's in shock and can't believe what's happening.....or MJ just used those words cos they sounded good. Heh.

I think that Annie is just this girl who he's talking to. Some criminal has broken into her apartment. She sees him covered in blood and it drips onto the carpet. She tries to hide under the table, then he sees that she's "unable" to defend herself, so she runs for her bedroom and he like attacks her. She doesn't die though, maybe she gets raped or something, but she lives to be asked if she's ok.

From Wikipedia

One night while Jackson was asleep, Joseph climbed into his room through the bedroom window. [...] For years afterwards, Jackson said he suffered nightmares about being kidnapped from his bedroom.[6]

Ever since Michael dropped the mask in Thriller his whole art has been one damped autobiographic outcry.

Here is another twist:

One day Joe Jackson decided that Michael should become/stay the golden goose for the family. Thus he beat the heart out of little Michael and intimidated him into 'agreeing' to the unthinkable: Having him neutered and spayed so that he could keep his golden voice.

"Sounding heartbeats - intimidations"

His mother/father/family asked whether he will be OK?
"I dont know"
"I dont know"
"I dont know"

And his mother tried to resurrect* him:
"Mouth to mouth resuscitation

Dad gone it - baby!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This is soooooouuuuu sad!! Even if it is just my wrong interpretation.
I always wish the most genius pieces of art are the product of fantasy,
but all too often they are autobiographic.

This was always one my favorites of MJ. I believe I read somewhere that this song is about domestic abuse. Michael did a lot of music about social issues and the human condition and that's what I respect about him.

This song was originally written for the movie Moonwalk, and it was approx. 10 minutes long. It was also originally titled "Al Capone" before it was released. the version we all listen to is the shortened version which appeared on his album; "Bad." The song almost did not make it out on this album.

"Annie's" attacker is supposed to be "Mr. Big" Frankie Lideo from the movie.

I love this song so much!! It is my favorite from MJ, it rocks!!

It is true that Annie is the name given to a realistic type of doll used to practice CPR, called Resusci Anne, or Rescue Annie. The people practicing on the dool usually say "Annie are you ok?" to learn to response immediately when the victim is not. The face of the doll was copied of a deathmask of an unknown young women found in the Seine River, who, even after her death, shocked everyone by her beauty.

So to me, this song makes sense:
I agree with the hitman theory, and I think the part where he repeats "Annie are you ok" is to ask the young girl in the song if she is ok after being left for dead, before attempting to do CPR on her, which explains the reference to the Annie doll.

The bloodstains part is probably the hitman's after breaking in by the window.

The interesting thing is that criminal doesn't seem to be at all smooth. He makes his entry by breaking the window. "The sound of a crescendo" is the breaking glass. "Blood on the carpet" might be sexual, but then again he just smashed through a window. He's got a reason to bleed. He hits her, she crawls under a table to get away, makes it to the bedroom where he hits her again to finish her off. Which he does not do. When the paramedics arrive she's still alive although possibly not for long.

The crime described is the exact opposite of smooth. It's brutal, devoid of cleverness or finesse. The perpetrator is called a "smooth criminal" for the same reason big men are called "Tiny"

Michael Jackson is so amazing and his passing was mourned all around the world. He may have been labled badly and hung out with the wrong people, but he was the king of pop and there will be no one like him. I hope all people who hated him or thought poorly of him realize what paparazi do to people that are talented that could be you. Paparazi bring done the people with talent so like no wonder things happen like Britney Spears and what not.

This is pretty obvious..

She was attacked by a hit man, and she had to have died! "Struck down" doesn't only mean beaten, it means killed.

He Came Into Her Apartment

He Left The Bloodstains On The Carpet

She Ran Underneath The Table

He Could See She Was Unable ((unable to defend herself))

So She Ran Into The Bedroom

She Was Struck Down, It Was Her Doom ((No where to hide, she was doomed for going somewhere he could easily follow her)).

And it's slightly plausible it could be someone she knows beating her, but more likely for a mobster to be whacking her since he uses the word criminal..

So They Came Into The Outway
It Was Sunday - What A Black Day
Mouth To Mouth Resus - Citation (Obviously M2M, meaning she wasn't breathing nor was her heart beating)
Sounding Heartbeats - Intimidations (Meaning the CPR was trying to intimidate her heart into beating)

Just my take..

I really can't believe he's dead. I mean sure we've all made More than enough MJ jokes, but still he has always been an icon, even if it wasn't always for the right reasons. I've never been a HUGE fan, but he was definately one of the first artists I remember listening to when I was a kid.

I'm not really crying my eyes out now that he is gone, but I'm definately not dancing for joy about it either...MJ for a FACT was a gift to music. It is unfortunate that there were so many circumstances that inevetably distracted many of us from that over the years.

R.I.P Michael Jackson.

I think this song as a sexual crime bearing committed. Annine in the song seems like some kind of performer and MJ was her guardian or other... "bloodstains on the carpet" could mean that the hitman/rapist has already claimed another victim before Annie or killed someone in his way of getting close to her. "Underneath the table" She knew he was coming for her and like a dumb*** hid under a table....."Struck down" as in raped and robbed of her virginity. The continuos "Annie are you Ok" is Mj trying to comfort her over the phone during one of his mob meetings.

If you do in fact watch the full song from the Moonwalker movie, you will notice missing lyrics in the radio edit.

So they came into the outway
It was Sunday - what a black day
EVERYTIME I TRY TO FIND HIM
HE'S LEAVING NO CLUES LEFT BEHIND HIM
AND THEY HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING
OF THE SUSPECT OR WHAT TO EXPECT
Mouth to mouth resuscitation
Sounding heartbeats - intimidations

So...in my conclusion for the movie and radio, MJ is an somewhat abusive gangster with a fiancee/protectee named Annie. On a sunday night, an opposing hitman raped her and left evidence to frame MJ as her rapist (The reason why the cops were on his tail). MJ was on a personal vendetta to find her rapist and take him down himself before the police do. (In relation to the omitted movie lyrics, MJ seems to know who the hitman is). As a sign od hopelessness, MJ takes refuge in a mob bar seeking info of the Smooth Criminal (in song) o.O

Shocking isnt it?

Time to use something I learned from Stats class!

Let Ho: Michael Jackson = Innocent. The null hypothesis for every court case in the US justice system is that the defendant is innocent. Let Ha: MJ =/= innocent. The alternate hypothesis is that MJ is not innocent. Because the jury found that there was not enough evidence to reject then null hypothesis, MJ is legally innocent. Whether or not a Type II Error was made is up for debate, but MJ, in the eyes of the US legal system, is an innocent man.

Now back on topic. I love this song and the AAF cover is actually pretty awesome.

Referring to the above comment, "I always thought it was about somebody raping a virgin, but thats cos I tend to assume that anything by Michael Jackson has some sort of sexual undertones. The murder theory does make a lot more sence."

Firstly, if you are trying to portray yourself as intelligent then I suggest you brush up on your grammer,"sence", I believe it is spelt, sense.

Nevertheless, I am not here to be pedantic about your sheer lack of good grammer and punctuation - in which, may I add, reveals your shortage of knowledge. I am here to defend one of the greatest songwriters and performers of our time; Michael Jackson.

Secondly, 'Smooth Criminal' is obviously not, as you narrow mindingly suggested, about raping a virgin. If you could find a reference to the girl, "Annie", being a virgin then I would apologise sincerely. However, I fear you will not.

I would be extremely interested in how you came to obtain such theories and/or information that, as you so adequetly stated, "...anything by Michael Jackson has some sort of sexual undertones." Is this due to personal experience. If so, councelling would be required. I can forward you the names and numbers of such therapists.

Whether or not you have expertise in the legal system, which I am highly doubtful that you do, you should be intrigued to know that an individual is "innocent until proven guilty". Michael Jackson was indeed found innocent and thus is not guilty. However if you are narrow minded enough to jump onto the bandwagon and join the witchhunt, in which seems to find great pleasure in destroying any happiness that this poor man has left, then feel free. I am merely stating that you have absolutely no grounds for such assumptions.

Lastly, I would like to correct you on the meaning behind this great song. I am led to believe that the meaning behind such songwriting is as follows:
1) Annie is a girl in which was assaulted in her own home-

As he came into the window
It was the sound of a crescendo -
He came into her apartment
He left the bloodstains on the carpet
She ran underneath the table
He could see she was unable
So she ran into the bedroom
She was struck down.."

2. "...it was her doom." is an ambigious statement in which suggests that the girl committed an act that angered her attacker thus leading to her assault.

3. Michael Jackson is not referring to himself as the criminal, "Annie, are you ok? I don't know why baby!", here he is talking in 2nd person and clearly has come to help her.

So, in conclusion Mr. Comrade Liar, as Shakespear most famously said, "You are a shallow cowardly hind, and you lie."

RINSED.
