They made up their minds, and they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?

They drank up the wine, and they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when their car broke down they started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?

Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry, they'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home but they really don't care
They wanted the highway, they're happier there today, today

The children woke up, and they couldn't find 'em
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off and left it all behind 'em
(Leavin' it all behind)
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?

Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry, they'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home but they really don't care
They wanted the highway, they're happier there today, today

Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
It's always summer, they'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry, they'll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home but they really don't care
They wanted the highway, they're happier there today, today
(Leavin' it all behind)

i agree w/ the idea this song has something spiritual to do w/ it...here's a few ideas i hav to throw out there...

    1) ...they tried to get to paradise w/out going through Christ (The Way) and as a result end up wandering the highway...this could mean two other things: athiests or people of non-christian religions but who are good people deserving of heaven after death get their own paradise, or they could be in a sort of purgatory, still trying to get into heavan -- they left the real highway and are now on a golden highway to heaven, but they could hav gotten there faster through Christ

    2) there was an episode of the twilight zone where a mean old man and a good-hearted hippie both die at the same time and go to a room where 60s music plays ad infinitum...the hippie was in heaven because he got to dance his eternity away, the old man was in hell b/c he had to listen to music he hated for the rest of their life...these people did get to go to heaven: they got to be young joyriders on a golden highway, driving for all eternity...but still, w/out Christ ("The Way"), they will never reach a destination -- implying they could hav had a better ending, even though they are in their own version of paradise
