Lyrics for Daughter as interpreted by kevin

Daughter Lyrics
Alone, listless
Breakfast table in an otherwise empty room
Young girl, violins(ce), center of her own attention
Mother reads aloud child tries to understand it
Tries to make her proud

The shades go down it's in her head
Painted room, can't deny, somethin's wrong

Don't call me daughter, not fair to
The picture kept will remind me,
Don't call me daugher, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me

She holds that hand that holds her down
She will rise above

Don't call me daughter, not fair to
The picture kept will remind me,
Don't call me daugher, not fit to be
The picture kept will remind me

Don't call me daughter, not fair to
The picture kept will remind me,
Don't call me daugher, not fit to be
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me

The shades go down
The shades go

the meaning is that its a story of a girl who's abused by her mother, but the abuse has gotten so bad that the girl now actually beleives she is really to blame

"violins" in this song should be "violence".

First of all, its not
"not fair to"
its
"not fit to"
and it is violins and not violence

actually, both "violins" and "violence" works. In the lyrics Eddie hand wrote, he write "Violins(ce)"

that was the point... that they sound the same

This song is about dyslexia. In the early 90's this disorder wasnt well known and DAUGHTER is addressing the issue. "Mother reads aloud, child tries to understand, tries to make her proud." Her mother just blames her daughter's problems on a lack of will when instead it is something she cant help. She tries to please her mother but she cant and she doesnt feel fit to be called her daughter.

Hey peoples!!
Does anyone else out there think that this song is also related to Rearviewmirror!!
Seems a little strange to have a line about shades in both songs.
Daughter- Shades go DOwn
RVM- Finally the shades are raised.
Could it be that Eddie is talking about his own battle with dyslexia?? Maybe its just about child abuse?

I never knew the song was about dyslexia, when I searched up for the meaning of this song it was always answered with "it's a song about child abuse", hm...though maybe it could be about both.

this song is a mix between eddies own experiences being verbally abused by his stepdad and a story of a child with a learning disability (ive heard dyslexia too, but ive never heard any solid proof for it). it definitely works hand in hand with 'rearview mirror': "the shades go down" turns into "finally the shades are raised". at their cores, both songs are essentially about living in an abusive situation. 'daughter' is about being in that situation, and 'rearview mirror' is about finally getting out of it. the end of daughter does offer some hope of the escape to come; "she will rise above"

I agree with PJ10...but...no one should tell anyone what a song is 'really' about...lyrics should be able to be interpreted on an individual basis...no one has the right to define anything, and everyone has a right to their own opinion: no one is 'wrong'...the purpose of this site is just to convey ideas.

Love Pearljam, love the song, seems very likely the song has to do with dyslexia. However, whoever said Eddie Vedder ever had a battle with dyslexia? Like Andybee stated..."Could it be that Eddie is talking about his own battle with dyslexia??"

first of all nasus is absolutely correct, dont tell people their interps are wrong b/c it is all perspective.

i think what makes this song so great is the ending, especially live, i love when the band tags songs onto the end of this.
