Third Eye Lyrics
Dreaming of that face again
It's bright and blue and shimmering Grinning wide And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes On my back and tumbling Down that hole and back again Rising up And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye In... Out... In... Out... In... Out... A child's rhyme stuck in my head It said that life is but a dream I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along "So good to see you I've missed you so much So glad it's over I've missed you so much Came out to watch you play Why are you running?" Shrouding all the ground around me Is this holy crow above me Black as holes within a memory And blue as our new second sun I stick my hand into his shadow To pull the pieces from the sand Which I attempt to reassemble To see just who I might have been I do not recognize the vessel, But the eyes seem so familiar Like phosphorescent desert buttons Singing one familiar song... "So good to see you I've missed you so much So glad it's over I've missed you so much Came out to watch you play Why are you running away?" Prying open my third eye So good to see you once again I thought that you were hiding And you thought that I had run away Chasing the tail of dogma I opened my eye and there we were So good to see you once again I thought that you were hiding from me And you thought that I had run away Chasing a trail of smoke and reason Prying open my third eye

This song is the grand finale of Ænema. This collaberation of every meaning behind the other songs in Ænema is a metaphoric sea of beauty. It reminds us to keep an omnispective view of everything, to question and contemplate existance, to not believe blindly, amongst other things.

"see, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do, and if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor: go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes and all your cds and burn em. cuz you know what, the musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? real fucking high on drugs."
"today, young men on acid realize that all matter is merely energy condensed into a slow vibration; that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively; there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're an imagination of ourselves. here's Tom with the weather."
"it's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom, is what it is, okay, keep that in mind at all times."

Why are you running away?"
then
"I thought that you were hiding
And you thought that I had run away"
I just thought I'd comment on this strangely written part. It's MJK writing about himself, as two people. One him thought that the other him was hiding, and the "hiding" him thought the other was running away ("Chasing the tail of Dogma"). As small as it is, most people probably don't recognize this, but it's a beautifully written piece. Good times, good times...

Singing one familiar song...
When he sings these two lines he is refering to the use of the halucinagenic peyote cactus that grows in parts of northern Mexico and the SW United States. After eating between 4 and 8 "buttons" from the inside of the peyote cactus, one can experience visions including animals who speak.

tool incorporates hinduism and principles of such isms into their music..it amazes me that people listen to this band and have no idea of the things that course through the very music. the 'eye' motif is very..how do i say. the eye has symbolism. yes it does. most would infer things about the all seeing eye, or what ever. but the third eye in this song is..okay the sanskrit work for what maynard is talking about it the Ajna Chakra. its the 3rd eye..and is like a filter.
i read the lyrics for this song and a realization SLAPPED me in the face. it was amazing. and i put my head down and just shook it. tool is amazing. im rambling..an apology.
before i go into what i believe the song is saying..ill mention what it is YELLING out to me.
"Dreaming of that face again
It's bright and blue and shimmering
Grinning wide
And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes
On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye"..
to me it sounds like he sees himself..his spiritual self staring back at him, the vibe i get seems like the spirit is childlike,.. innocent. comforting.
so here we have a person looking into his own 3 eyes with his very own two.
"And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye"
here it seems as though hes realizing and as though he is seeing himself for the first time in a long time..(the beginning, before he was contaminated with any influencial religion or dogma of any sort.) His 3rd eye has been shut.. the 3rd eye representing his astral self..the one that gains insight cosmically, and univerally..had it been opened and nurtured with meditative practive..yoga.
hes 'seeing' again..his withered eye..the american public has withered eyes..they are so withered.. "watching television is like taking black spray paint to the 3rd eye"- Bill Hicks.
"A child's rhyme stuck in my head
It said that life is but a dream
I've spent so many years in question
to find I've known this all along
"So good to see you
I've missed you so much
So glad it's over
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play
Why are you running?""
and this is the beautiful part..its like.. his Self has always been a part of him, yes? yes. Hes always felt it singing to him, that voice calling him back home.
the song in general has a light vibe right now in the song.. as his Self sings to him. So glad it over..ive missed you so much..
and it like the physical self is realizing a few things and is listening to the Self. The Self wants the physical and the spiritual to be united, but of course thats not mainstream in America..
"Why are you running away?"
The Self can see the physical becoming disstracted again. Whether it be with religion, tv, work,..sex.
"Shrouding all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song..."
its quite clear that the physical seems as if it is recognizing the Self and the music getts louder..and if you have the Salival version the emotion you get is intesified with the whishpering..amazing. and the Self begins Yelling.
and Maynard keeps screaming PRYING OPEN MY 3RD EYE! and then the physical sees.
the Self says,
and in my head..i see the Physical looking at himself in a totally "different light, at a different angle..becoming volnurable", the self says..
"So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me
And you thought that I had run away
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason"
at this point the physical is speaking to the Spiritual Self..clearly after PRYING OPEN HIS 3RD EYE..
clearly there is a misunderstanding..because the Self mentioned how he thought that the physical was 'hiding'..
the physical is understanding how the Self would think that he had run away chasing a trail of spoke and mirrors..Maynard is calling Religion (dogma) a joke..a prank.Smoke and mirrors...
the Physical and the Spirirutal Selves become one when they understand one another and basically help one another flush away the impurities that come with daily living.
when i thought of the song this way..i applied the same meaning to Parabola..when Maynard says..'We' barely remember who or what came before this precious moment..you know? well what if that "we" he keeps referencing isnt me and you and him and her, but me and me..you and you..him and him..the Physical speaking to the Spiritual..
of course this could be a misunderstanding..being that tool can be so vague.
the 3rd eye is an amazing and very hard idea to try to explain in a simple post and reply..i hope i have supplied some kind of insight..for any of you..

interesting point about this lyric. The reason why he refers to peyote as phosphorescent desert buttons is because if you look at it through some sort of heat vision (googles or whatever) they all glow a slightly different shade.
