Lyrics for Ænema as interpreted by implode

Ænema Lyrics
Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any fucking time, any fucking day
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona Bay

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latté and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your Prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car

It's a
Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any fucking time, any fucking day
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona Bay

Some say a comet will fall from the sky
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves
Followed by fault lines that cannot sit still
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dip-shits

Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will because
I sure could use a vacation from this

Silly shit, stupid shit . . .

One great big festering neon distraction
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied

Learn to swim

Mom's going to fix it all soon
Mom's coming around to put it back the way it ought to be

Learn to swim

Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and
Fuck all his clones
Fuck all those gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes

Learn to swim

Fuck retro anything
Fuck your tattoos
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory

Learn to swim

Fuck smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas
Fuck these dysfunctional
Insecure actresses

Learn to swim

Because I'm praying for mayhem
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I want to see the ground give way
I want to watch it all go down
Mom, please flush it all away
I want to see it go right in and down
I want to watch it go right in
Watch you flush it all away

Time to bring it down again
Don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines

I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend

I want to see it all come down
Suck it down
Flush it down

You know what? I'm gonna sum this up for all of you. Tool's songs are never as simple as they seem. LordJezz, you are UNDER-analyzing the song. If I attempted to explain all of this to you, it would take me several pages. So you people are gonna have to do a little research of your own. Go to the library, find a copy of Man and His Symbols, by Carl G. Jung. Open it to page 177, or whatever page this may be in your copy, and Read the whole section entitled, The Anima: the Woman Within. It will explain a lot, and it will explain why Maynard makes references to "Mom". Have fun kiddies.

What I interpret from this is Maynard talking about mother earths cleansing process and how we are coming to end of a cycle - "Mom's going to fix it all soon. Mom's coming around to put it back the way it ought to be."
How everyone is so dam immersed in their egotistical materialistic possessions. Cars, lawsuits, financial and social status, and MONEY amongst many other things. I love it how he talks about one of the many cancers of the earth that is L.A.
We really are just a surface inconvenience. Gaia will shake us off like a dog shakes off fleas.
Fucking beautiful song!!

It reminds me of Joe Rogan's DMT-Rant: "You don't lose your mind, it makes you fucking sane..If you fly over Los Angeles you think 'that's fucking cancer!'"

I dont think it's about the apocalypse. I think this song deals with a much more day to day level of life in America. It shows how fucked up the mindset of nearly everyone is.

One of the most beautiful song ever. Amazing guitar, Danny puts so much emotion into the drums, bass line is awesome, and Maynard's lyrics, needless to say, are the best. I love the profanity, too, for some reason. It's just spot-on.

Can someone tell me what he means when he says, "Mom" in the song? Is it he is talking about a mother or is it an acronym of some sort?

Not much else to say other than Maynard James Keenan is a lyrical God. And top 3 vocalists of his time. Oh and something Ohio can be proud of, considering our sports are a constant dissapointment.

i know for a fact like some of you have said its about bill hicks theory of los angeles falling into the ocean but i beleive when he talks about "mom" maynards talking about his mom who was a faithful chrristian and to maynard if youre not up to his mothers par then youre not a christian so hes asking his mom to send all the fake christians down with la not sure about that but for the most part im nearly positive about bill hicks

Very cool, most of these comments are on the dot; When Maynard explains "Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be." He's saying that Mother Nature will come down and purify this area. This is somewhat obvious, I'm just posting this since i feel that Maynard seemed to put most of his "feeling" into these lyrics. This is a very good song very good indeed.

For the most part all of your interpretations sucked, except for maybe the very valid point TremorControl stated about Bill Hicks. If you are familiar with Tool as far as influences go, you should know that Bill Hicks was a comedian whose ideas strongly impacted Tool's music. He was pretty much Keenan's idol. But the song is based on an act that Bill Hicks did speaking of the latter. And yes, latealiss i DO believe this song has a hidden message. See if you ever listened to any of Tool's music, their music questions God and religion alike. I would believe that most likely Keenan was an agnostic at the time this song was written and therefor, wasn't really a believer in Armageddon, but was so sick of the shit in this world that he was wishing for the whole story to be true, just so it could take him away from the "bullshit three ring circus sideshow" known as life. I believe also that when he said "Mom". It wasn't like a metaphor for mother nature or anything like that. I believe he literally meant his mom. Why? Because his mom was very religious and when he says "Mom flush it all away" I think he's basically saying "Mom even though i never believed you before about the whole rapture bullshit before please be right so i can get out of this fucking hell hole" That's what i think i maybe a little off but don't kid yourself i did make some very convincing points. This is probably my favorite song of all time. Love it!!!

For a while the theory was big that scientists discovered that in the far-off future California could be separated from the rest of the U.S. from a super-earthquake (from the San Andreas fault).

Tool is saying that they hope this happens because of all the ignorance/B.S. in L.A.

It's a pretty clear song lyrically. No hidden meaning.

As with most of their lyrics, and song construction, Aenima is layered with meaning and oozing paradox. Layered meanings address topics such as superficial, egoic existence; armegeddon (& fear mongering); societal/moral breakdown, consumerism, alcehmy & transformation. The lyrical musings are somewhat more overt than MJK tends to be but he def. has the ability to move from subtelty to a sledgehammer. I

f you have an understanding of 2012, the period of time we're in now (pertaining to both the world that's presented to us through mainstream instutions as well as the increase in consciousness that is forecasted by the Mayan Calendar) then the idea of "the apocolypse" (which does not mean "destruction" it means "revealing" and the fear of destruction is whats been cultivated in humanity for millinea in order to support limited belief systems like that of egoic, materialistic living, religious dogmas, etc... as referenced in the lyrics) doesn't seem so scary after all... which is why he asks you not to call him a pessimist and to show that you can read between the lines.

Interesting. Very nice few last comments, very well explained and in-depth.

I just watched a movie last night, you may know of it, 'An Inconvenient Truth', with Al Gore as the primary protagonist (if you could call him that).

For those of you who do not know, or have not seen this: do yourself a favour and watch it. I believe it's one of those movies which increase your awareness of the world around you.

How does this relate? Well, I won't say that this is what Maynard was thinking when he wrote the song, but I do see slight similarities. Global Warming will, eventually, raise the ocean-line by up to around 40feet, drastically changing our world, and leaving many places flooded and uninhabitable.

If I correctly recall, I think California was one of those places which would get flooded.

I can't verify all of these facts, because my research only goes as far as watching the movie, and gleaning from this what I could. I will be researching it over the course of this year, though.

I am very surprised the comments on this song only start from this year... incredible. There must have been a site re-start or something of the like?

Again I say TremorControl and lesbonees are on the right track, in my opinion (but I guess opinions mean little these days?)

Zac.

I agree with lesbonees. However, I thought this song was about what lesbonees said, and also that this song is about California sinking into the sea. I may be wrong about the California sinking into the sea bit, but idk. Oh, for those of you who don't know, L. Ron Hubbard was a man who wrote a series of books, which later became the bases for the "religion" called "Scientology."

He talks directly to two groups of people. One group: those who he is calling out: people who live for superficiality. Los Angeles is a fine example of a place in which many people dwell on the meaningless. They are viewed as the hopeless. They are being spoken to directly: "Fret for your figure....fret for your lawsuit..." When "see you down" is mentioned, a heavenly rendevous is suggested. The target audience becomes completely different. He now, is NOT talking to the L. Rons and the gangster want-to-bes, he is talking to us. In other words, he calls out the savable, the ones that need to learn to swim, while the others drown. "See you down in Arizona Bay:" I don't think that this is the place in which all the bodies of stupid people gather, I think that Arizona Bay could be a metaphor for a better place to live, a higher ground, perhaps. It could be a place for the remainder when the fools have been cleaned away. It could be a place for us all to live without the "hip gangster wannabees" etc. If the ones that "learn to swim" (which means: elevate ourselves above the superficiality) come together, we can live in a place (Arizona Bay) all our own. When he says, fuck all the 'this, that and the other,' he speaks to us in between. Each time he says, "learn to swim" the target audience changes. "Fuck all you junkies and fuck your short memories" is obviously directed toward junkies with short memories. Then, he says "learn to swim." When he says "learn to swim," he is no longer talking to the junkies; he is talking to us. He speaks to the ones that have to learn to live a better way, the salvageable. He is saying, 'avoid the junkie way of life'! Learn to swim and get past it! So when the hurricane comes, you will live while the weak and superficial drown! And then you can join me! You all can join us in a place without fake ass women, men who don't think and just get fucked up all the time and waste their lifes, people who mask themselves and who need titles and to title everything....We can all stay "occupied" when the poison festers. We can learn to swim and stay unaffected from all of this silly shit.

This is my favorite song from tool so I hope I get this right. This song is alot about bill hick's Arizona Bay thing about the shit hole California sinking into the ocean and that the world would be better off without it's bullshit. Also basically they should learn to swim or they'll die. I think he also ment metaphorically that learn to swim means something like maybe they'll be clean off all there day to day drama, bullshit, and all there materialistic things they don't need. And I think maynard wouldn't mind if some of them died like scientalogist (for those who don't know L. Ron Hubbard is the founder of scientalogists and fuck all his clones), gangsters, junkies, and basically people just follow blindly, like fads, or "retro". I think he says "fuck your tattoos" because, just like alot of shit, as just became something like a popularaty contest.
Also when he mentions "mom" I think he's refering to mother nature destroying California.
Also when he says "don't just call me a pessimists, try and read between the lines, I couldn't imagine why you wouldn't welcome any change" I think he's trying to say that he doesn't sound negative but it needs to happen, he's just being honest. Also the whole reading between the lines thing is about the song might sounded negative at first but if you really listen to the song you'll realize it's really not.

I think by now everyone in this damn country look to the "cali" way of being...with all the hollywood b.s.!
I personally cant stand all that fakey crap...i have a child and i hope to teach her that theres more to life than
the clothes you wear or what u drive...screw all those parents who support the "gotta have it all" and buy there kids the best of everything...while the parents themeselves are shopping at hollister and trying live through their kids....
its disgusting!!! I dont hope that people will drowned or anything...just wish parents would wake up...stop getting spray tans and bleaching their hair and teeth...i would just rather drowned that way of
thinking....lots o love...Ive seen tool 4 times and once was in my hometown of beaumont,Texas in 2003...Why they came there i still dont know but they kicked ass...27 yr old mom...and a tool fan forever
