Lyrics for H. as interpreted by implode

H. Lyrics
What's coming through is alive
What's holding up is a mirror
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn this piss to wine

They're both totally void of hate,
But killing me just the same

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
Considerately

Venomous voice, tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty
Drags me down like some sweet gravity

The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again

And I feel this coming over like a storm again
And I feel this coming over like a storm again

I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me
And considerately killing me
And considerately killing me
And considerately killing me

Without the skin,
Beneath the storm,
Under these tears
The walls came down

And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes,
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times

I could have cried then
I should have cried then

And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die
It's all right
I don't mind
I don't mind
I don't mind

I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,

And considerately killing me
And considerately killing me
And considerately killing me

The struggle between good and evil in all of all. Also, its about how someone very close and dear to us hurts us unintentionally but you cannot stop it because your too 'connected to slip away'...

This song describes some crazy stuff like snakes and piss. I am not sure what this song is about. I think this is probably one of their best songs

"the song is about being very close to someone who is tearing you apart, someone you can't bring yourself to leave, but someone who will destroy you because you can't leave them. It is the price you pay for being close to them; they aren't doing it on purpose: "considerately" ~ from the toolshed.down.net FAQ

Okay guys, I'm pretty positive on this meaning. This isn't my own interpretation, therefore I do not take credit for it, but I do agree with it.
Okay, about the meaning from toolshed.down.net... it's partly true, but not completely. Ya ever wonder why they just DO NOT play that song on tour, like hardly at all, even though it's so popular? Well it's because this song has a special meaning to Maynard.
Devo Keenan, his son, has the middle name of H... not anything extra... just H. The song isn't about any person at all, it's about his son... think about the song. Maynard had a bad relationship with his father when he was young, constantly being abused. Even though he loves Devo, sometimes he has a problem, and wants to hurt him. He gets it from his father... and it causes him to want to lash out at his wife and his child. that's why when he says they're "void of hate, but killing him just the same"... he means that Devo loves him, but he's still hurting Maynard because of Maynard's past....
When he talks about "snake behind me hisses, what my damage could have been", he's talkin about how what his father did to him wants to resurge through him and onto Devo. then the next verse "my blood before me begs me, open up my heart again"... he's sayin that the blood before him (his children, future grandchildren, etc.) is begging him to forget the past and start over... Infer the rest of the song for yourself. I think this is the best explanation possible. Thanks for botherin to read this.

this song is incredible... i think that what madson is saying is DEFINITLY valid, but it could apply to anything in all of life... it could also have to do with someone that someone is close with, possibly feeling some sort of love, and wanting to be there and stay with this person forever, but they keep tearing down the wall that they build somewhat, or that the person that he is near wants him to sort of slip away fade away, or not exactly pushes but implies, and he is too connected to do that... and it hurts him to tear it all down.

wow i hadn't even thought of it to mean what madson says, but of course i was not aware of maynard's past. (shows the type of fan i am *looks at the floor with shame*). it's an amazing song and i think the meaning of a song really lies in the mind of the beholder. but it's always interesting to see why the artist really wrote it. i can relate to this song in a completely different way..

Maynards full name used to be James Hubert Keenan (yes ... Hubert! shocking eh? :) )
but he changed it into James Maynard Keenan
and the H. stands for Hubert

i think ....

and when maynard says :

"I could have cried then
I should have cried then"

is this a refference to "lachrymology" ? (the study of crying as a theraphy)
i thought that lachrymology was one of hte main Philosofy's of Tool

i checked this song to make sure that someone had said what madson said. that is what maynard meant when he wrote this song; HOWEVER artists write their songs so that their fans can relate to them. maynard didn't come right out and say what he was writing about so that everyone could relate and say "this reminds me of..." or "when i hear this song, i think of..." maynard had one thing that he wrote this song about, but it means many things to many people. so, take this song as you will, just realize that this is an awesome song.

The reason why they don't play this on tour anymore or rarely is because maynard finds this song to be more of a painful reminder. Maynard says that he stops playing a song that loses it's meaning to him. Tool songs are about moments and capturing them, whether it's something he felt angry about and wanted to scream about at the time. If he doesn't feel that way he won't play it because it's just a reminder of the past, and plus he says it's like telling a fake story.

And aslo Maynard said one time on tour when Tool did play this song it was about having the Devil and an Angel on each shoulder fighting with each other.

Thanks madson for your explaination, this makes a lot of sense. People will always disagree about what a song really means, but nobody can dispute that this song rocks, and that's all that matters.

must every tool song be about something?its interesting to know what a song is about but cant greatness be left alone to be great without everyone adding their two cents in,everyone has an oppinion, they have a right to share their oppinions but part of tool's greatness is the mystery behind their songs,so i say let the mystery be shrouded in darkness forever,i like it better that way.

IT'S NOT WHAT I THINK IT MEANS, IT'S WHAT MAYNARD SAYS IT MEANS. IF ANYONE HAS THIRD LEG, THE MUCH POSESSED LIVE BOOTLEG, MAYNARD SAYS IT'S LIKE AN OLD CARTOON WHERE YOU HAVE A DEVIL ON ONE SHOULDER AND AN ANGEL ON ANOTHER. THESE TWO ARE YOUR FRIENDS GIVING YOU CONFLICTING ADVICE ABOUT LOVE. THE SNAKE BEHIND ME, THATS THE NAYSAYERS. MY BLOOD BEFORE ME, THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE TELLING HIM TO OPEN UP AND TRY AGAIN. THIS IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE SONG. THEN IN THE SONG HE REMEMBERS THE TIMES HE'S DIED IN RELATIONSHIPS AND COMES TO ACCEPT THIS FACT AND THE FACT THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN, AND HE DOESN'T MIND. END OF STORY.

the whole beauty of Tool is the ambiguity of the lyrics. It would be boring if it was completely obvious what the lyrics meant. Look at how many comments have been posted for tool, loads! It's great just to think about it. I love tool and i can't wait for the 25th May 2002!

this song...its a work of art. though some of these interpretations make sense, i think that if this song was meant to have an obvious meaning, it would have been written that way.

"H" was actually originally supposed to stand for half-full, but it could also be for half-empty, so the h stands for both.
