Lyrics for Eulogy as interpreted by implode

Eulogy Lyrics
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him

So long
We wish you well
You told us how you weren't afraid to die
Well then, so long
Don't cry.
Or feel too down
Not all martyrs see divinity
But at least you tried

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all

But it was so loud
You sure could yell
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his façade 'cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fucking lie

Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you fucking lie

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

You had a lot to say
You had a lot of nothing to say

Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr

To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye...

This song is Maynard's way of finishing what Christianity keeps blabbing on about... "You guys keep repeating this, and you keep bringing him onto this cross... here's the fucking eulogy, I'll say it, then we can take him down later and hang up whoever you want to save you next." Spite towards man's need to be led, disbelief in Christ, and initiative to just finish it and shut everyone up, all rolled into one fabulous song.

Has anybody heard of a man name Adolf Hitler?
I'm sure the wrighters of this song accept every explanation provided by the listeners, well I didn't see anyone say a damn thing about Hitler, well check this out

It could be a lot simpler than a person dying. It could be maybe like, say you look up to someone, a friend, and they act like a friend back, but you realize everything you ever saw in that friend was fake, and they never were truly your friend. Something happened and you realized that they weren't who you thought they were. And the persons getting back at them for hurting them and ruining the image they aspired to be like. Maybe...

But anyway, this is hands down the best Tool song EVER. I love it.

Nah, it's not about Kurt. I'm thinking L Ron Hubbard. I doubt Maynard would contradict himself like that (saying Kurt had heart and was entertaining in an interview) and then have a song bashing him? L Ron Hubbard fits that song...and we all know Maynard hates him with his "Fuck L Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones" from Aenima.

i belive this is a song that lashes out at all martyers in general, how they will preach there bullshit, take ur money, and act like god and expect u to follow everything they say just because they say it when there far from god in that god died for all our sins, and any givin preacher wouldnt even concider dying for us so why do they have the right to act like god and demand from us and tell us rules and restrictions on how to live our lives

I don't know how many years ago it was, but the scientologists invited Tool to play a show for a gathering of the scientologist convention and so Maynard did some research about L. Ron Hubbard and saw te hypocracy of thier faith and he wrote this song for them.

Anyways, this song is great, but being a Christian, I cannot say that I agree with the beliefs if they reflect on Jesus Christ in any way. But either way, it is brilliant writing and I wish I could someday ask Maynard about his faith and his beliefs because if we used his music, it would be impossible to decipher any resemblence of a faith and yet, it seems like he has a faith out there... who knows.

The problem that I have accepting the ideas that this is about Jesus, Hitler or any other specific leader is it just isn't Tool's style. When else has Maynard ever written a song about a specific individual? It seems too shallow for the band. In the case of L. Ron Hubbard that silence wrote of, I could see a plausable acception, but . . .

I relate these lyrics to anyone who has followed another human and held them up 'above the ground' and eventually realized their own flaw to be so easily manipulated. In this manner it may fit with the theme of the album as a whole (Anema + Enima) as a sense of cleansing yourself and moving on towards higher enlightenment.

Let me try and re-state my point for clarification:
The only specific reference to Jesus is at the end, "Get off your fucking cross." Maynard doesn't usually refer to individuals so bluntly. I beleive that instead, this is a metaphor to about someone who raises themself to obtain recognition.

As a member of the military, i would have to agree that his military experience has something to do with this song, but it can be applied to almost anything. it was something i noticed in advanced training. Our superiors would go on and on about how they were there for us and cared about us. When in fact all that they cared about was the facade. Getting us to be good little soldiers and get a good evaluation reports. now as a leader i have been taught to go out in front and lead, make others follow. When you first get in the military you see the leaders and want to identify with them, be like them. and then you realize its all bullshit.

I don't actually mean to offend anyone, but so many of you are saying this song is about Jesus, and I don't understand how you could possibly think that. Did you all forget completely about the line "Not all martyrs see divinity / but at least you tried"? If ANYONE reached divinity, I'd say it would be Jesus, which pretty much AUTOMATICALLY rules him out. Also, when the %@$^ did Jesus ever point the finger at ANYBODY??

To understand why Maynard has a deep contempt and mistrust of the Baptist faith and Jesus...one must understand his roots. Growing up in the heart of Baptist Ohio...along the halls of the Bible Belt...Maynard was exposed to some of the most horrific nature humanity has to offer. The people who showed him this terrible humanity happened to be devout followers of this faith...in short, they supposedly represented the faith and Jesus, and it, in Maynard's eyes, represented them. I am of course refering to Maynard's parents, especially his abusive stepfather. Maynard is a very practical fellow...a steadfast believer in practicing what you preach. He's learned that honest people are hard to find because honesty is NOT an inate human characteristic. He believes that honesty does not come with adherence to sheep-like dogma that is a facade for an evil which he is very familiar with: evangilism or preaching for money. Maynard is a steadfast believer in alterior motives and the coniving nature of humanity. He's seen it in his pedifile stepfather...a father-son trust built so he can take advantage of a defenseless child who doesn't know any better. In Maynard's eyes, for someone (Jesus) to recruit followers by promising them something so stupendous and amazing (everlasting life in heaven) is the highest crime of dishonesty and hypocracy, and definitely facades an alterior motive. This parallels the love and trust Maynard's stepfather promised him, which in the end wound up being a misnomer for his pedifiliac tendancies, another facade for alterior motives. Maynard says that martyrism is absolutely ridiculous because it is human nature to be GREEDY AND SELFISH, something no one can trust. Maynard sees philosophy evolve for humanity. The lowest level being conformity, adhering to the masses mindlessly. The middle level, and the level of greed and exploitation is the level of non-conformity, or rebel without a cause (but actually with a cause, whether it be fame, fortune, etc. and alterior motive)....Maynard sees Jesus in this category and does he place his stepfather there. A more enlightened Maynard believes that he and his fan would fall into the more educated category, the third tier, which is do whatever you feel is right whether it be conforming or not...you make the choices in your life and not have others make them for you.

I was also always under the impression that this song was about Bill Hicks, I'm not sure where all the religious connotations came from. Bill died shortly before the release of the album and I believe this song is a dedication to him. Let's look at the lyrics:

"He had a lot to say, he a lot of nothing to say"
(listening to Bill Hicks, he is known to rant and change topics frequently)
"Standing above the crowd, he had a voice that was strong and loud"
(yes, this is also true of a comedian)
"ranting and pointing his finger"
(see above)
"you took a stand on every little thing"
(Bill Hicks was very opinionated and questioned common societal conventions)

I can't explain the break in the song, as it starts to lose it's references to Hicks. Perhaps he is stepping outside of specifics to give the song a more general meaning.

There is a picture of Bill Hicks in the liner notes somewhat dedicating the album to him. Why not a song about him also? I think allusions to others listed here may be reading a little too much into the song.

R.I.P. Bill, and thank you.

Well,I've been reading some of the things but not all,too long, but anywho I think that this song is about the people that may have whitnessed Christ's crucifixion. And these people may have been the "non-belivers" and been very skeptical towards Christ. like it says in the Bible there were people spitting on him and so forth. so i view it like this is a mock on Jesus on the "non-belivers" part which very well could be Maynard but you never know....
