Lyrics for Eulogy as interpreted by implode

Eulogy Lyrics
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him

So long
We wish you well
You told us how you weren't afraid to die
Well then, so long
Don't cry.
Or feel too down
Not all martyrs see divinity
But at least you tried

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all

But it was so loud
You sure could yell
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his façade 'cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fucking lie

Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you fucking lie

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

You had a lot to say
You had a lot of nothing to say

Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr

To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye...

Someone do us all a favor and delete the Flame War between Lateralus666 and Pariah919. It has nothing to do with the song and everything to do with both of them trying to come in first in a race no one else is running in or even watching.

I agree that Anema deals with a lot of Bill Hick's ideas and I feel that this has a lot to do with his whole thing about "fevered egos, tainting our collective subconcious".

Ok, I must admit that I haven't listened to this song in a few months, but if memory serves me fight, Maynard says something like:
"Maybe you could be the one to save me from my own existance" if you are talking about the bit after that, then I have no idea, because, as far as I can tell, he isn't speaking English.

I think it's from the point of view of the people who killed Jesus. He always said that he would die for everyone, so why is it a shock that His enemies murdered Him? It's about how the Jews trivialized His followers and everything He said, like He was some crazy fool, and put His money where His mouth was. But He never backed down. He meant everything He said, and did it all for humanity, not Himself. And to me, that's so much more badass than anything that anyone's ever done. And yet to this day, we still trivialize and reject Him.

This is what I heard:

"thoughts spilling you over"

There's something before and after that, but that's what I hear. He says "lightly" before that. I can't make out entirely what he's saying, and I'm sure it would be much easier if you could cut out the instruments playing.

My suggestion: get rid of the bass and boost your mid/treble ranges. That's how I can hear it.

I think the song is about the death of a close friendship. Someone close to you let you down and broke his word.

i hope this helps you solve the puzzle to the meaning of eulogy...
this is what Maynard is saying during the indistinct part of the song.... listen to it: "I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone and the symbol on you. So he bashes his skull through the window while over looking the sea. Twilight amber ego. We were amused by this"

He is attacking those who attempt to use religion to gain power. I member how there was this one insanely rich evangelical preacher who was found with a prostitute and it was all over the news. This is the person that Maynard is attacking. He is saying: How can you stand up there on your cross and preach to all of these people about how to live your life when YOU dont even believe in it?

Destroyer One...that's not what he's saying during the indistinct part. These lines stretch from 4:30 to 5:40.

You could be the one
To save me from my own existance

I was so,
So sure that I'd sin,
That I'd sin and you'd pay too

I'm just glad I knew you knew me enough
To allow me to always sit by you
So mad since you stopped giving all your commands
You weren't too mad when he called you
Your mind is helpless

I believe that the real meaning behind this song is whatever you think it is, as are most of Tool's songs anyway. They're designed for us to poke at them, and for them not to retaliate. But, it's fun to make your own opinions about the songs, so I have one...

I think that it's about a person, devoting his/herself to religion to the point that he/she doesn't listen to what others have to say, he/she just keeps rambling on and on about what he/she thinks is right and wrong. So, you might as well say "goodbye" to the person, as he/she is already too absorbed by his/her beliefs. Oh, and the "goodbye" relates to something else as well. When MJK is talking about the whole martyr thing, I think he's poking at the fact that you might as well be one if you say the things you do, sacrificing yourself for your own cause. There are people who will die for their religion out there, for example, the 911 incident a few years back. As well, I think the point of which MJK is singing from is religion itself, or a god or something of that fashion.

"The song is clearly about Jesus Crist.
He was basically a martyr.
Just read the end of the song."

I don't agree that the song is necessarily about Christ - I know he has the references to crosses, etc. at the end, but that's an expression commonly used (obviously in parallel with Jesus) to any martyr

The song's about Christ. It's not about L. Ron Hubbard, it's not about martyrs in general, it's just about Christ. Get over it.

In typical maynard fashion, this song carries multiple meanings, all of which could be correct considering the man never tells anyone what any of the songs mean, its part of his "artistic vision." For me the meaning I enjoy the most is how maynard plays the part of the questioning follower who gets pissed. It almost seems like he is pretending to be one of his own "fans" who is questioning maynard's martyrdom and calling his bluff. Maybe maynard deep down inside is insecure that he will be replaced one day. After all its his blind followers that give him his "power."

This is going to piss tool fans off, but keep in mind its what maynard wants, he always says he wants his fans to leave his shows feeling inspired to do something even better than he has done. That means eventually he would be replaced.

I think it's implying that when a person has a hero who they idolize or worship, it might really be more about satisfying a selfish emotional need of their own than anything that hero has said or done.

It could apply to Jesus or Bill Hicks or anyone who is put on a pedestal - it doesn't really matter. Actually that is the point of the song; that it really *doesn't* matter if it's Jesus or Bill Hicks. "No way to recall/What it was that you had said to me/Like I care at all." i.e. It's all about *my* need to identify with someone above the crowd, someone important, and I can replace you once you've served your purpose.

to tell you the truth, i thought it was about .. let's say a hypocrite. How he spoke and went on about everything. And when maynard say's "we're gonna miss him" it's almost sarcastic becuase the guy was such an asshole.

And you have to look deeper into the song. Even the relevance of the mega-phone. Think of it as Maynard impersonating a man DOING the hypocrite's eulogy. (almost a different person.)

and Maynard coming of the mega-phone in the chorus is now Maynard speeking of the man.

The of a freakin' asshole who you know if doomed from the start. And you just watch him until his biggest fall. Then he's like, "what did i do wrong?!?" and you laugh cause you've watched him the whole time be an asshole and NOW he's the innocent one.
that's how it related to me.

just remember to always approach thing with an open mind. Don't just look at it one way.

On the surface, this song is alluding to Jesus. That is fairly obvious. But I think Tool is using Jesus and Catholisism as a metaphor for ALL so called martyrs and cult leaders out there...Hitler, Hubbard, David Karesh...etc.

Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr

To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye...

Those lines to my symbolise the inevitable death of all these martyrs, whoever you want them to be, and the rise of a new one, or new ones.

If you know anything about Christianity at all you'll know MJK is talking about Jesus Christ i.e. 'you're standing above the crowd (preaching) he had a voice that was strong and loud, and people have always been 'eager to identify' with someone above the crowd, someone who seemed to feel the same, someone prepared to lead the way, etc.' Millions of people in the past have been brainwashed by one man because he was such a powerful and influential speaker (such as Adolf Hitler). He's questioning Jesus' honesty as a true Martyr who would die for him or if he was just another martyr trying to obtain a following of new believers.

On the surface, sure, it's about Jesus. But Tool songs are deeper than that.

one of the first tool songs i became obssessive with, I just love the way it builds in the intro. I don't think it is necessarily about either Bill Hicks or Jesus although I would lean more towards the latter interpretation if i had to pick. I think it is essentially about the desire to have something or someone to put 100% of your faith into. Ayway

Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space
to nail the next fool martyr

Best lines in a tool song by far!
