In my situation I hear this song as being about God and that's the way I need to hear it.

This is love song he is talking to woman (you), he singing that no matter what trouble or her mood will be, he will always love her and feel the same for her and he is admire all her movements. This song is also for me can be as hard relationship song where, man love girl much more than she loves him.

all the places he speaks about God are his prayers and how he waits for god to reply to those prayers "I'm trying to identify, The voices in my head, God, which one's you?"
wat he means by heaven here is the girl's place and not the actual heaven.
But I think it's both related to God and a girl. Like he loves a girl but she doesn't love him as much as he loves her, or she's being insure or something like that, so he's waiting for her to make her mind and give him a word, but if she needs more time, he'll give her time, cause he's hanging in there and he's depending on God, and he's "falling back to the arms of grace".
I think when he says that setting outside heaven's door. he means when it's too late, (when he dies or something) and she can't tell him anything anymore, he's just going to hear the sound of her breathing.
I think it shows the band's belief and faith in God, but speaking about another subject.
