Lyrics for Breathing as interpreted by oofus

Breathing Lyrics
I'm finding my way back to sanity again
Though I don't really know what
I'm gonna do when I get there
Take a breath and hold on tight
Spin around one more time
And gracefully fall back in the arms of grace

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be
Where I wanna be

I'm looking past the shadows
Of my mind into the truth and
I'm trying to identify
The voices in my head
God, which one's you
Let me feel one more time
What if feels like to feel
And break these calluses off me
One more time

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside your door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah

Oh I don't want a thing from you
Bet you're tired of me waiting for
The straps to fall off of your table to the ground
La da da da...
Cause I just wanna be here now

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door
And listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door
And listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah
Where I wanna be

I know this song is technically supposed to be about God, but anyone who has felt this way about someone or had a moment like this with someone can probably relate to this song. It's magical and powerful, a great song.

ok first of all rainbow and sic and twisted good job, for sticking up for ur anti-religious beliefs, cuz theres so few anti religious people out there, so we all need to stick together! but anways yea maybe the band is christian and maybe they meant for this song to be about the hippy freak called jesus, but OTHER PEOPLE can intrepret it the way they want to, it can be considered a love song, because it just makes sense that way, it doesnt matter what jason meant it as itz what u as an individual thinks of it as, and you know just cuz ur brainwashed like most of the population doesnt mean u can preach to us ok? they have religious websites you can go to for that shit

although i must say, i'm not a religious person, and i find it harder to believe in the concept of god the further i go through life, i have to say that, just because someone believes in god, doesn't mean theyre brainwashed.... people make their own decisions, if people have chosen god, or believe that they have found god, then you have to leave yourself open to the possibility that maybe they have... don't push your beliefs onto other people, i have done this on this website in the past, there's no point.... in the end, just live a just life, and be kind to your fellow human beings

this is one of my favorite lifehouse songs. When i was 14 i taped it off the radio and listened to it a million times. When i finally figured out who it was i went and bought the cd. it made me so happy when i heard it. i use to dance around my room to it...who cares why or to who exactly jason wade wrote it too? it's a great song...just enjoy it and attach your own meaning to it... :)

...and listen to you breathing... I love that line, because it was like that with me and my bf. If we were together we wouldn't have to talk or make idle conversation- just being so close to each other was enuff :)

The most comericailly successful religious songs were intentionally left ambiguous as this one is. Yes, to the guy who wrote the song, "God" means Jesus. But it's non-specific enough that it also works as a regular love-between-two-humans love song.

Why does he mention heaven if it's a normal love song? I dunno, it could mean that when he's with his girlfriend/boyfriend he feels like he's in heaven.

Yeah. In conclusion, because it doesn't make explicit reference to a god or loved one, it appeals to the largest audience possible.

The members of Lifehouse are christians, but Lifehouse is not a christian band. The songs are written so that they are open to various personal interpretations, so the songs are not solely about "finding God" and such.

I don't believe in God, nor do I need a God in my life. As far as I'm concerned, and knowing what I do about religions, I'm better off. But this website isn't about religion, so I'll get on with it.

I think that this song is a love song. I don't think that the God thing makes a whole lot of sense when you pick the song apart.

This is my interpretation...

I'm finding my way back to sanity again
Though I don't really know what
I'm gonna do when I get there
Take a breath and hold on tight
Spin around one more time
And gracefully fall back in the arms of grace

This verse is about trying to get over the person you love. “I’m finding my way back to sanity again” is about trying to get back on your feet and figure out who you are because you’re realizing that you can’t love the person. “Though I don’t really know what I’m gonna do when I get there” is expressing how far off the goal of falling out of love seems, and all of you who’ve felt this way about someone will know exactly what it’s like. It’s essentially not knowing what you’re going to do once you’re yourself. You know, it sort of poses the question of “Now what?” when you’re imagining yourself as complete again. Often when we fall in love, we put so much of ourselves into the person that we don’t know who we are without them. “Take a breath and hold on tight, spin around one more time” talk about bracing yourself (“Take a breath and hold on tight“) for a long, hard journey, and breaking your own heart for the last time (“Spin around one more time” - when we’re trying to fall out of love, we try and try to break our hearts and fall out of love, but it doesn’t work) so that you can move on. “And gracefully fall back into the arms of grace” is about falling back in love all over again, because sometimes you just can’t get away.

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be
Where I wanna be

This entire chorus is expressing love for the person this song is about. “’Cause I am hanging on every word you say” is simply stating that you don’t have to be doing anything with the person, you could just sit and talk to them or listen to them talking and you’d be happy. “And even if you don’t wanna speak tonight, that’s alright, alright with me” is about the fact that just being with the person makes you happy. Their presence makes you complete. “’Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven’s door and listen to you breathing, it’s where I wanna be” is describing the amazing connection you have with the person. You’re contented just to listen to them breathing. The heaven’s door thing means that you could just sit outside their room and listen to them. Their room is considered heaven because it’s where they are, and you consider them to be an angel.

I'm looking past the shadows
Of my mind into the truth and
I'm trying to identify
The voices in my head
God, which one's you
Let me feel one more time
What if feels like to feel
And break these calluses off me
One more time

“I’m looking past the shadows in my mind into the truth and I’m trying to identify the voices in my head, God, which one’s you?” is about trying to get past memories of the person that you haven’t been able to let go of so you can move on. You’re trying to figure out who you are and sort out which voice in your head is the voice that’s telling you what the right thing to do for yourself is. “God, which one’s you?” isn’t about asking God a question - the “God” part is used as an expression of desperation (an example of this is, “God! Why did this have to happen to me?!”, if you’re able to grasp the meaning). The “Which one’s you?” part is about needing the person the song is about to get over them. Sort of an “I-can’t-get-over-you-without-you” type of thing. You need them in their life, and you need their voice in your head. “Let me feel one more time what it feels like to feel, and break these calluses off of me, one more time” means that you want to be able to love them for a little while longer before you let them go (“And break these calluses off of me).

Oh I don't want a thing from you
Bet you're tired of me waiting for
The straps to fall off of your table to the ground
La da da da...
’Cause I just wanna be here now

“Oh I don’t want a thing from you” means that you don’t have to have them love you and as the lyrics say, that you don’t want anything from them. “Bet you’re tired of me waiting for the scraps to fall off of your table to the ground” means basically that you think the person is tired of your almost-worship of them - you consider them an angel, which is a sort of extension of the “heaven’s door” metaphor - and that you feel that you’re just not worthy of them. “’Cause I just wanna be here now” means that you just want to be with the person.

Let me know what you think.

I first met my girlfriend in college. Late at night she used to come to my room and fall asleep in my bed. I would keep working and listent to my easy listening music (i.e LH) and this song would come on. I would turn always turn and see her breathing, smile and go to bed. Although she may now be in Canada and I'm still in Australia I still listen to it, turn and check my bed. A great song

i think it's about pain and the loss of a loved one. he's just willing to wait for her scraps to fall of the table and he's happy sitting at her door listening to her breathe. anything just to be there, right there, next to her. even if it makes him look like a miserable loser. i think a lot of people can relate to this song because they've been there, the brink of desperation, borne out of love and pain and suffering. yes me included.

this song is beautiful...i do agree that the whole god concept ruined a slight piece of it for me. to clarify, because it has the word heaven it doesn't reference it to any religious idea, heaven can be interpreted in many ways.
so power to all the bible humpers cross huggers, but this song can be very powerful in a different sense than just GOD.
and by the way, don't give me shit. i go to church every sunday like a good little girl.
just don't preach shit and say it like that is how it is. it's your opinion.

Why is everyone fighting about whether or not it's about God or about a girl/guy that the person is in love with. This site is for the discussion of the meaning so that we might gain insight from each other on different things.

Originally, I took the song to be a normal love song to a loved one, but my wife said she couldn't figure it out, so we listened really closely, and this is the conclusion I came to:

The guy is essentially praying (at heaven's door) and he's going to take whatever he can get from God, even if God won't speak to him. As he's praying, he's "listening to the voices in [his] head", and wondering that--even if God DOES speak--how will he know whether or not it's God "God, which one's you".

That alone didn't convince me, though, because the whole "hear you breathing" made it sound more like a person...However, what finally nailed it for me that it was a song to God was that they cleverly stick a scriptural reference into the lyrics "waiting for the scraps to fall off of your table to the ground," which is a direct reference to Matthew 15:26 and Mark 7:28 where a woman asking Jesus to heal her daughter said "even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table". He is saying that he knows that he may not be worthy of God's attention, but that he will sit there and wait outside Heaven's door in the hopes to find even the scraps that fall from God's table.

That is what finally convinced me that the song was to God, because it is a very rare analogy.

However, feel free to take the song as you will. Clearly Lifehouse made the song vague enough so that it could be interpretted either way.

For the anti-Christian sentiments that were shared...if you don't believe in God, why do you get so upset about it...if someone tried to convince me that Santa Clause existed, it would be worthy of amusement not angry ridicule. I would pity the person who put so much faith in someone that didn't exist...not spit angry words at them. By getting upset just because someone believes in God makes it seem like you are "fighting" something, and fighting something that you say you don't believe exists seems odd to say the least. Rather you should just let Christians carry on in their delusions--if that is what they are--and continue in your enlightened ways.

BTW - I probably should have avoided the sarcasm in my previous post...just so nobody thinks I'm preaching from my previous post...I think that this works wonderfully as a love song. I have known that kind of longing for someone when I've lost relationships in the past...I would have done anything just to get a word from them...it is gut wrenching, and life just doesn't seem like it will go on without them.

I have also known that kind of intensity when I have walked away from God and done my own thing, my own way for awhile and then "find my way back to sanity"...turn back to God and "fall back in the arms of Grace".

Both life events are extremely intense. So, I think it is great that people can find meaning to this song with experiences of their past relationships--either way...I do not mean to detract from that in any way. Love is love...it can be extremely intense--especially when it is lost. This song is a beautful song regardless of what it's original intentions were by the artist.

There are some songs that the first few times I listened to them, I heard them as being one thing...but then at another point I really listened to all the lyrics and realized it meant something else...I simply chose to ignore the new aspects and continue hearing it the way I had originally, because it meant more to me that way. This song means what it means to you...who cares what other people think.

Also, I won't take offense if people ridicule my post...I'll honestly probably never come back to this site to check...but it's a waste of time and reading for everyone else to sit and have bashing segments on other people's opinions...this site is about everyone sharing their opinion about the song...not attacking other people for their opinion about the song.

So, whether Christians are trying to "prove" that it means "God" and change someone's opinion...or anti-Christians attacking Christians just for having a "God" opinion about the song...that's not the point of this site...

But then, that's just my opinion...so do with it what you will...
