Lyrics for Breathing as interpreted by oofus

Breathing Lyrics
I'm finding my way back to sanity again
Though I don't really know what
I'm gonna do when I get there
Take a breath and hold on tight
Spin around one more time
And gracefully fall back in the arms of grace

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be
Where I wanna be

I'm looking past the shadows
Of my mind into the truth and
I'm trying to identify
The voices in my head
God, which one's you
Let me feel one more time
What if feels like to feel
And break these calluses off me
One more time

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside your door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah

Oh I don't want a thing from you
Bet you're tired of me waiting for
The straps to fall off of your table to the ground
La da da da...
Cause I just wanna be here now

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door
And listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah

'Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door
And listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be, yeah
Where I wanna be

Wow! I've heard this song for so long, and just a couple weeks ago I started wondering what it could mean. I ended up thinking it was a boy-to-girl love song, but that the guy was dead!!! and that was why he longed so badly to feel and all the other stuff he says in the song. Anyway, after reading your comments I think it makes sense to think it is about God hahaha, but still wanted to share my interpretation =P.

Ok, first things first, this song is all about God. You are right if you think it's about love, but it's the wrong kind of love, it's the love Jason has for God! Like everyone says, Lifehouse is a christian group! not every single song is about God, but a lot are and i'm sorry if you aren't christian, but you've got to face the facts.

Cause I just wanna be here now ...

Straps is actually suppose to scraps, like leftovers or unwanted portion. And to me, this is possibly the most important and poignant part of the song. I believe it to be a song about and to God. I think he (Jason Wade) has come to the realization that his detour, of sorts, wasn't all he thought it would be and has left him 1) rattled and 2) distant in his relationship with the Lord. Now he's feeling the weight of what he's done and where he's been and is letting go of all his selfish pride and truly laying himself and God's feet. And he knows that the type of communion and closeness they shared in the past won't be recaptured all in one night but he's saying that at this point, right now, he just wants to experience/feel God's presence.

This song is the most beautiful song!

me and my boyfriend discuss it quite often, as he thinks its about finding god and defeating depression, i can agree, however my opinion is that the song is about finding new love after being hurt, and wants to open up and be released of his old pain, so he can love again, the line that does it for me is " i'll gracefully fall back to the arms of grace" it just conjurs up an image of him taking refuge in the arms of a lover ....maybe its just me...either way the song is one of my favourites!

It is about God.
"God, which one's you?"

& I think it is awesome.
Even more awesome to see others
Stand up for what they believe in.

to add to the previous post, ecclesiastes 5 speaks of guarding your steps when you near the house of god and going to listen and learn from god.

"i want nothing more than to sit outside your door and listen to you breathing..." later on, it says "sit outside HEAVENS door"

i think this is a pretty clear reference as well.

"I can't believe people here are saying this song is about God simply because they are CHRISTIAN ROCK. Like..what the fuck, people? Just because they are christian rock doesn't mean every song they fucking sing is about god."

True, but this song IS about God. And a few of the lyrics are wrong.

"I'm finding my way back to sanity again
Though I don't really know what
I'm gonna do when I get there
Take a breath and hold on tight
Spin around one more time
And gracefully fall back in the arms of grace"

why would he refer to a girl that doesn't love him as the arms of grace?

However, in 2 Corinthians 12: 8-10 it says

"Three times I prayed to the Lord about this and asked him to take it away. But his answer was: 'My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak.' I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ's power over me. I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

"Cause I am hanging on every word you say
And even if you don't wanna speak tonight
That's alright, alright with me
'Cause I want nothing more than to sit
Outside heaven's door and listen to you breathing
Is where I wanna be
Where I wanna be"

1 Samuel 3:1-4 "Now the young Samuel was the servant of the Lord before Eli. In those days the Lord kept his word secret from men; there was no open vision. And at that time, when Eli was resting in his place, now his eyes were becoming clouded so that he was not able to see, And the light of God was still burning, while Samuel was sleeping in the Temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, The voice of the Lord said Samuel's name; and he said, Here am I."

Samuel had God's approval, and slept in the Temple, right next to the ark of God because that is where he loved to be. Right next to God. Even though he'd never heard his voice. Kind applies to what the singer is saying eh?

"I'm looking past the shadows
Of my mind into the truth and
I'm trying to identify
The voices in my head
God, which one's you
Let me feel one more time
What if feels like to feel
And break these callouses off me
One more time"

With all the voices and distractions around us, it becomes hard to tell what God wants us to do. He's asking God to break all the calloused pieces off of him, all the walls he's built up. So that he can feel who God really is one more time.

Heb 12:1-2 "As for us, we have this large crowd of witnesses around us. So then, let us rid ourselves of everything that gets in the way, and of the sin which holds on to us so tightly, and let us run with determination the race that lies before us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end. He did not give up because of the cross! On the contrary, because of the joy that was waiting for him, he thought nothing of the disgrace of dying on the cross, and he is now seated at the right side of God's throne."

"Oh I don't want a thing from you
Bet you're tired of me waiting for
The SCRAPS to fall off of your table to the ground
La da da da...
Cause I just wanna be here now "

Matthew 15:25-28 At this the woman came and fell at his feet. "Help me, sir!" she said. Jesus answered, "It isn't right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." "That's true, sir," she answered, "but even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from their masters' table." So Jesus answered her, "You are a woman of great faith! What you want will be done for you." And at that very moment her daughter was healed.

Even though she wasn't one of God's chosen people, this woman had faith that Jesus would heal her daughter. The singer loves even to just wait for God to move, he loves the even the little things that God does for him.

Hope that made sense. I was surprised no one saw the scriptural reference. God bless you =]

Who says that they are christian rock? The band is not labeled as christian. But Jason is :D
Anyway, not all songs are about God, I agree. But this one is :-P
Though you may interpret it the other way if you want. I don't care

Yeah, this song is totally about God... whether you like it or not. Such an amazing song. But as Jason himself says, you may be free to interpret it the way you want, or even if it fits your situation, I guess no one minds.. But the fact is obvious ;)

this song reminds me of something i went through and the one person who stayed with me through it. i didn't think i loved him, but other experiences revealed how much he actually cared about me, and that i truly did care for him in return.

I dont think I can say anything that hasnt been said already, but I couldn't not comment on this song. Whenever I listen to it, I just imagine lying with someone, holding them as close as possible, both knowing that words arent necessary... and slowly, falling asleep, listening only to the sounds of each other breathing.

I've had that before, but this song really makes me miss that closeness to somebody... its a beautiful song.

This is such a beautiful song. I think it can either be romantic, or spiritual. For those who believe in God - having a relationship with God means to be in love with God. (ok, non-believers will think that seems strange, but you christians understand me, yeah?) Anyway!!! So yeah, I reckon you can either relate this to a guy or girl you're in love with, or it can relate to God. Either way, this song expresses an intense longing. It is just so beautiful, it's captivating, it's dreamy. Jason wade is incredible.. HE is dreamy!! This is probably one of my all-time favourite songs! "I am hanging on every word you say" - wow. What passionate words! "even if you don't wanna speak tonight, that's alright, alright with me. 'Cos I want nothing more than to sit outside your door and listen to you breathing.. that's where I wanna be".. oh, the words take my breath away!! I can relate to these words a lot.

I think this song is one of those that doubles as a religious song and a love song. The way they substitute "your door" for "Heaven's door" makes me think this. In the religious aspect, I think it's about how God doesn't always talk back to you when you want Him to, but it's okay, because just sitting there waiting for him to talk is fine with you. In the love song aspect, it could be about a girl that the singer loves, but the girl doesn't feel the same way. However, the singer is being patient and waiting to see what happens. He doesn't demand anything from the girl. He's just happy to be near her, even if it's in complete silence.

I really don't like it how athiests claim christians shove religion down their throats when they shove how god doesn't exsit right back at other people.
I'd rather have faith and be happy then walk around believing that this is all that there is and after I die that's it.

No one wants to read that stuff on here, this is a very beautiful song it doesn't matter if you think it's about god or about love. It's what the song means to you.

Awwwh I think this is one of the most beautiful ballads ever. I can listen to this so many times and not get tired of it. Hehe, I first heard it when I watched a Pride and Prejudice fan video on YouTube, and I. fell. in. love. with this song. It can even make me fall asleep at night, lol.

This song IS all about God, people. " Fall back into the arms of grace...", "Sit outside heaven's door....". Most obviously, he asks, " I'm trying to identify/ the voices in my head/ God, which one's you?". Jason Wade must be seriously schizo if he's hearing his girlfriend in his head, innit?

But of course, if you want it to work on a romantic level, go ahead. You can even work it on a friendship level or parental level. Its about love, after all. Love for God, yes. But I do suppose that if you want to, eros could be contrasted with agape for poetic and dramatic effect.
