Lyrics for Call And Answer as interpreted by ojms

Call And Answer Lyrics
I think:
It's getting to the point where I can be myself again
I think:
It's getting to the point where we have almost made amends
I think:
It's the getting to the point that is the hardest part

And if you call, I will answer
And if you fall, I'll pick you up
And if you court this disaster
I'll point you home
I'll point you home

You think:
I only think about you when we're both in the same room
You think:
I'm only here to witness the remains of love exhumed
You think:
We're here to play a game of who loves more than whom

And if you call, I will answer
And if you fall, I'll pick you up
And if you court this disaster...

You think:
It's only fair to do what's best for you and you alone
You think:
It's only fair to do the same to me when you're not home
I think:
It's time to make this something that is more than only fair

So if you call, I will answer
And if you fall, I'll pick you up
And if you court this disaster
I'll point you home

But I'm warning you
Don't ever do
Those crazy messed up things that you do
If you ever do, I promise you
I'll be the first to crucify you
Now, it's time to prove
That you've come back here
To rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild
Rebuild...

I actually think there is a platonic level to this song. I see them as a former couple who have ended a deep relationship but must now move on to being "friends". He offers his eternal help and assistance to her but not without judgement and conditions -- the whole "first to crucify you". To me, this is not the blind acceptance of two lovers but rather the conscious and critical oversight of friends. These two are not lovers anymore but they still share a deep bond to each other. It is for that reason that I love the song because it shows a higher level of emotional committment, one that is beyond sex and the romantic. To me, the song is a ode to the ex-girlfriend/ex-wife with whom you can no longer "be with" but who will always be a part of your life.

I think it's being let down by a friend, whilst you still offer friendship and await their next move. Waiting for an instigation or a sign of approval.

The hardest part is the actual confession and kick-off of the conversation about the "rebuilding".

This song is definitely different than any others they have, but it also stands out a lot.

On the album, Stunt, this song comes right after "Alcohol", so i thought it might be about rehab, and rebuilding his life after a drinking problem. I know the verses don't all fit, but it's one possible interpretation of the song.

I love the video for this song, and the song itself.

powerful song in being the dumped and finally getting to that spot where you feel like you are yourself again. and where you can finally get to that point where the two of you can be friends and be ok with it.

I am (was... haha) a casual BNL fan, but I threw my old BNL album in tonight since I'll be seeing them live tomorrow night, and I know I've heard this song 100 times, but tonight it was like hearing it for the first time. My ex cheated on me, and she's been trying so hard for the whole year to get back with me, and I think this song just helped me make my decision. Wish me luck...

Yep, couple getting back together with each other. She thinks he's insincere and that he doesn't really love her, he thinks about her only when she is around. She thinks that, because that's the way SHE is.

He wants her to stop thinking only about herself and to think about him and to show him that she actually loves him and wants him around. But, if she isn't willing to do that, then he doesn't want her around and will point her home.

AAAAHG! I am a sucker for good piano. I am in love with this. The atmosphere of the song (due to arrangement no doubt) caught me, too, it's... deep. Refreshing~!

"I'll be the first to crucify you" and "Rebuild..." are just beautiful as well.

For me, this song is about a guy who left a girl back into his life eventhough she messed it all up before by cheating on him. Nothing could hurt more. But he loves her too much to be without her. Trusting her ever again is not something that is going to be easy if at all possible. He warns her not to do it again. And the "rebuild" part is almost a plea to make it how it was before. My opinon, eventhough its just a song, he shouldn't let her back in. If she cared enough in the first place they wouldn't have to rebuild.

I absolutely love the bridge. My opinion, the best part of the song.

But, the meaning has already been said. Their relationship screwed up, but now they want to get back together - of course, if what made them break up happens again it's all over.

There's some "You think"s missing!

Apart from that, 'tis a good song, and I don't find it boring or anything.

"you think
it’s only fair to do what’s best for you and you alone
it’s only fair to do the same to me when you’re not home

I think
it’s time to make this something that is more than only fair,"

some of my favorite lines ever. and isn't that true? that sums up so much for me. i mean really. some times you just want to shout at the top of your lungs "GUESS WHAT, IT'S TIME THAT THINGS ARE A BIT MORE THAN JUST FAIR."

also, the whole "court this disaster" line just sounds so beauitful to me. one of my favorite albums of all time. i had this in the car back and forth between high school the entire time i was in school. so great.

as for the ending, i think it's saying "we've been through a lot, and i'll welcome you back with open arms...but if you hurt me that bad again, you're never going to see me again."

This is one of my favourite songs, but I just don't get the music video. He's talking to the girl, but she looks like she couldn't care less that he exists.

I know this song exactly cause what this about is just what happened to me. Ok this guy has a girl he knows and they have kinda drifted apart just cause of time and how things go. Well she starts doing stupid things and he lets her know that and tells her she needs to stop. Well she takes this as him giving up on their friendship. He realizes this and comes back to help her and to show that he will let her know that she is stupid but does it with love cause he cares about her so much.

This is the most beautiful of all BNL songs...I think it is just about how sometimes rebuilding a relationship is harder than just starting fresh, because the damage done can be too much to fix - but people try anyways...sad...but true. For me it's very true, anyways...

I just found a bit ago that my long term girlfriend had cheated on me within the last year. The first verse of this song is exactly how I feel now. I decided to stay together with her, but ever since then, I haven't been able to be myself around her. We're just getting to the point where we can trust each other again. I decided to give her another chance, and "point [her] home". "It's time to rebuild".

I've always listened to this song in terms of a relationship that's been over for a while and now the two are trying to totally be over it. Guy A is finally getting to the stages where it's okay to talk and conversate again, and he can accept the stuff Girl B put him through and not be bitter. This was always a "get-over-him-and-be-okay" song for me; it reminded me that eventually eveything is okay... LoL, how's that for irritatingly cute?

i think they're trying to recreate a relationship after she's been in some sort of trouble (drugs? suicidalness? something like that?) that's made the relationship nearly impossible, and he's saying "it's not gonna be like it was. we made it through that and we're going to take it to the next level. it's not just about us as individuals anymore. we're going to be here for each other now." and i think the part about "if you ever do . . . i'll be the first to crucify you" is saying he cares so much that if she does something to destroy herself again he will be the first one to call her on it and will be the most angry about it.
whenever i used to ask my old boyfriend "what should i listen to going to sleep tonight?" he would always say this song. it's so funny because, though we were in a totally different situation than the characters in the song, i was totally all about taking it to the next level and being so in love with him, and he could never quite get there . . . (notice i said OLD boyfriend . . .) but he still really likes this song.
