Lyrics for Everlong as interpreted by me109cito

Everlong Lyrics
Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight
I've thrown myself into
And out of the red, out of her head, she sang

Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head, she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Breath out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in

And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head, I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when

stop and listen to what he's saying, he's wishing for things to last forever, for her to be perfectly what he wants her to be in his head. it's actually a very one side request by him, wanting her to be completely vulnerable so he can be absorbed in it. notice "got to promise not to stop when i say when." he has these unnatural requests, longing for this so-called love to never end. unsure he asks repeatedly asks "i wonder" if anything could be this good again. i just get this feeling as if love makes people act in extremities. point in case, "hello i've waited here for you, everlong" how do you satisfy someone that waits forever? you cant keep anything from him/her. otherwise consumed with the unknown, insecurities, they go nuts. those are my 2 cents, and i'd like a drink now, thanks.

Now that I've read other ppl's interpretations, I think the sex/virginity/love song meaning makes a lot of sense.
Listening to it on my own, I never even thought of that. It always sounded like it was written about Kurt's death (and I'm not one of those dipshits who thinks EVERY song by NIRVANA or Foo Fighters is about his death). There's like 2 other people who thought it, too, so it's not just me. But, i don't think any of it has to do with Dave using heroin because i know he was never into that.

The whole song (minus the 'she' parts) sounds like it's about Kurt Cobain:

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

-I always thought that sounded like him seeing Kurt again in heaven (it sounds kinda corny, but still).

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Gotta promise not to stop when I say, when.

-Definitely sounds like he's looking back at being in NIRVANA and remembering the feeling of being part of something that huge and real. He knows he will never have that chance again.

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head, she sang

-Cobain hated the constant attention and publicity. When they became way too famous way too fast, it was too much to take ("in over my head"). He was mentally unstable ("out of her head").

Breath out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in

-Makes me think of Dave seeing Kurt's dead body and wanting him to breathe and be alive again. He wants to be with him again.

And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head, I sang

-(Even though I know Kurt Cobain didn't kill himself) I think Dave realized how many problems Kurt had and how much he suffered during his lifetime. He was "out of his head" and Dave, realizing this, goes "out of his head" as it hits him that he will never see his friend again.

This song makes me wanna scream and jump and cry
ts one of those songs that u want to be consumed by
but this one in particular... for me anyway. I press the headphones so hard into my ears in the hope it will stay in my head permanately
*sigh* doesn't work though
I dont know what it is. It may sound stoopid to some people cause it may be such an ordinary song to the rest of people, but for me... i can't get enough!

I may have commented on this song already, i can't remember (or be bother to check)
This song is amazing, i think its beautiful regardless of what its about (although, personnally, i think its a love song rather than about Nirvana). One of the Foo Fighters best.
The acoustic version really is beautiful (i need new adjectives!)

Theres just been a concert in my home town (Sunderland, England) - where the foo's where playing, they played this song like the acoustic version but with an electric guitar, played it first on the set. Everyone was just silent when he played it, utterly fantastic, about him being totally head over heels in love, finding someone absolutley *perfect*

Oh idaho_stallion, I agree with you entirely. Both versions are amazing. Sometimes its nice to listen to each one depending on how you feel. If its raw powerful emotion, original....if its incredibly fragile beauty...then aucoustic

This song is by far one of my favorites....

The original is awesome however if you havent heard it yet you must download the KROQ acoutsic version

I remember hearing it for hte first time on the radio.....i was actually on the freeway driving home from college and w/ perfect timing i had just missed the DJ explaining what song it was and just caught on when the song was just satarting....so i got a feeling of "hey i know this song i think"

Soon as i heard the first couple lines i realized what song it was.....and perhaps hearing the original song a couple times the fast paced tempo of the music kinda made me skip over the words a bit...

But man when I heard the mello sound of the acoustic guitar and the song was slowed down a bit more the words cut me in two...

So much so that I acutally pulled off the free way turned the motor off and sat there and listened for the first time to just what the song was saying...

I must say there is not a more powerful lyric in my mind than

"breathe out, so i can breathe you in, hold you in"
will hold those lyrics in my head forever

I found this from an article that was specifically about Everlong:

As to the meaning of this legendary song, it varies person to person (of course). Personally, it's about taking all a moment has to offer: living it up and never ending the perfection of that single inconceivable moment in time. In an interview Dave Grohl commented on the lyrics of Everlong saying they referred to people he thought were heroes to him. This was not to single out Kurt Cobain but also not to exclude him. An anonymous source has commented, to much detail and conviction, that the song is about Louise Post.

I think it's about Dave missing Kurt...Because Kurt started shooting up with Courtney, and spent less and less time with Nirvana. And also, here's proof:

'And I wonder, when i sing along with you'
He was the backup singer

'If anything could ever feel this real forever'
I think he said something about how the years with Nirvana were a BLAST

'You gotta promise not to stop when I say when...'
Possibly about his heroin addiction

This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I love it sooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so awesome and I love the lyrics. It makes me think of being with someone and not wanting the moment to ever end, no matter what. My favourite lines are-
"If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again"

I believe someone already mentioned this, but the song seems to be about sex. And I'm going to go a step further and say it's about some guy taking a girl's virginity.

Out of the red, out of her head she sang

Out of the red... Not to be getting gross, but what commonly happens when a female loses her virginity? Blood.

Out of her head... The hymen is often referred to as the 'maidenhead'. So basically he's saying she's lost her virginity and she's remarking on how great it feels. *shrugs* That's just me, though.

Don't mean to make the song sound cheap either. Even if you think of it in those terms, it still manages to be a beautiful song.
