Lyrics for Everlong as interpreted by me109cito

Everlong Lyrics
Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight
I've thrown myself into
And out of the red, out of her head, she sang

Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head, she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Breath out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in

And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head, I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when

In my opinion this is the most beautiful song everwritten. Unlike most of the crap that you hear on the radio these days this song is so passionate and heartfelt, even as I write this now I'm getting goosebumps. I know so many of you guys have already written this but this bit is just awesome...
"Breath out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in"
I think the acoustic version is the best, it just amplifies all that is good about the feeling behind this song - Dave Grohl is such a genius.
(Love the video, Taylor Hawkins looks hot even when he is dressed as a girl!)

I was at a Foo show last night in Jersey, and when they sang this song, I had a particular reaction to it. From the comments I've read on here today, this is a song that is played at every show; that it's most likely about Louise Post, and that it "means" something between losing virginity (really, you think Grohl in his mid-20s was writing about losing his virginity?) to falling in love to Kurt Cobain; and the most generally accurate statement is probably from shannonlindsey who says, "to me, it seems like this expertly written acount of feelings at a particular point in time where you would never want to end, but wonder how long it could last, because nothing THAT amazing lasts forever."

At the time it was written, it probably had very specific references to a part of Grohl's life, probably a combination of the forces of losing Cobain, losing his wife, and finding Post, but as this show is played each night at every show, you have to think it means a little more, no?

Anyways, when I saw it performed live last night, starting with an acoustic intro by a spotlit Grohl, and concluding with a full band fury, I think I found the reason why this song relates to so many people on a personal level: because it is a great general summation of any exuberant presently felt experience -- it represents an absolute drowning within the realm of Now. So when Grohl sings it live, the "she/you" of the song becomes the audience, when he whispers "Breathe out/ Breathe in" the audience is simultaneously pushing out to sing "breath out" and the audience breathes in as they deliver the next song: the audience as a living organism of the song.

The major verse:

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Gotta promise not to stop when I say, when
She sang

now is sung to the audience, the person Grohl is singing with, simultaneously does the audience serrenade Grohl as Grohl serrenades them, "If everything could ever feel this real forever/ If anything could ever be this good again" and both the audience and Grohl, for that moment that makes a concert, an event, a performance real and engaging and energetic, they both mean it. Grohl continues as the audiences echoes back, "The only thing I'll ever ask of you / Gotta promise not to stop when I say, when" showing that he loves performing to these fans, this audience, and wants this feeling never to be to far from him, even when he starts contemplating that fronting elderly position of retiring from the performing arts. The audience promises back, that they will always be there to see him perform this song.

This isn't the original meaning of the song, by any means, but it is a part of the reason why this song feels relevant upon each listening, and why the acoustic version is so much more personally engaging and popular. It is a timeless song because it so accurately represents the emotion of Now.

this song is insane... i just think it's funny that all these people think it's about this everlasting love... to me, it seems like this expertly written acount of feelings at a particular point in time where you would never want to end, but wonder how long it could last, because nothing THAT amazing lasts forever. but i could go on forever with my theories on love... slendid song thought, simply the best in my opinion.

I really do like this song. I never really thought of it as a song about a sexual relationship or anything like that... just deep love.

This song makes you feel in love without ever being in love.
I agree the drums are amazing. By the way, Dave Grohl plays drums on this, not Taylor Hawkins.

The music video is partially a parody of the cult horror film Evil Dead. In the movie, which was directed by Sam Raimi (who would go on to direct the Spider-Man films), a group of friends spend the weekend in a cabin only to be attacked by zombies. The parts of the video featuring Dave Grohl as some kind of a superhero with a giant hand (referred to as "Handor" by some fans) have nothing to do with Evil Dead, though. The video was directed by Michel Gondry, who went on to make Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Gondry used to have dreams where his hand grew to giant size.

this song is simply amazing. simple words yet so powerful. it remains my favorite song of all time. i take it as a song about TRUE love - passionate - as this song even carries such depth to it. It's quite invigorating and unlike any other love song. i mean i like how its not mushy and all, but fiery - the passion of love. I just love this song.

This song, as Dave said, is about when he first played a new wave drum beat on his drums when he was a kid, otherwise his love for creating music and nto wanting it to end, he also admitted it could be used in a romantic sub-text.

too deep to understand...words like "Everlong"...this song to me is about a momnet in time that he is reminiscing about...kinda the same meaning as Aurora, which is every bit as beautiful as this....Dave still can, just hasnt wrote anything like these in years.....Sometimes, your inspirations are different. Im the #1 Foo Fan in the world i think and i enjoy their new stuff, just not tlike this....

i think this is the most amazing love song. it has the ability to send shivers up my spine and bring tears to my eyes. it isn't lovey dovey and Dave kind of incorporates a bit of aggression into it which is so awesome. it reminds me of that first night you spend with your partner after being separated for a long period of time ;)

i think dave grohl has proved all the critics wrong, that said his career was over when kurt killed himself. Everyone idolises kurt when they should be looking forward at all the stuff daves acheived. Nirvana was an amazing band and still are, but dave has outlived all of them, literally. I heard this song for the first time today and didn't know they wrote songs as dark as this. I love the riff at the beginning. Maybe its about daves split with his then wife, Jennifer. He seems to be saying'could i ever feel this way about you forever'. maybe hes growing out of love with her but is desperately trying not to.

This song is about Louise Post from the band Veruca Salt.

Dave was married to Jennifer Youngblood from 1993-1997, and in 1996 Dave was recording a soundtrack to a movie called "Touch". He felt one of the songs needed a female vocal so he called around & Lousie agreed to do it. During the recordings Dave cheated on his wife and had an affair with Louise. Dave's wife divorced him, and he and Louise dated until October 1997. (When Dave dumped her for Winona Ryder.)

The part in the middle of the song with the whispering was originally Louise singing something, but Pat Smear thought it was in bad taste, so during the whispering part Dave just scrambled three audio tracks together so as to distort what you hear. One track is a love letter being read, one track is a technical manual being read, and the last track is a story about one of the studio technician's father.

It's about losing your virginity...."waited for you here, everlong.." "When I sing along with you, will it feel this real forever.."

Great song, great drumming too! And people may not like Grohl, but the man made the first Foo album himself. Did EVERYTHING for it....
