Lyrics for Everlong as interpreted by me109cito

Everlong Lyrics
Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight
I've thrown myself into
And out of the red, out of her head, she sang

Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head, she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Breath out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in

And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head, I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when

Years ago, before my older brother moved out of the house, he took me to go bowling with his friends. On the ride home this song came on, and we both sung along to it. When I heard the chorus, it just felt so real, because that was the last time I was able to be with my brother before he started his career and moved away. Now, every time I hear this song, it brings me back to that last car ride home all those years ago. Quite depressing right?

Whenever you need an example of a song that is powerful, meaningful, everybody loves, and that is just about perfect, it doesn't really get any better than "Everlong." Lke a lot of people have said, this song should DEFinitely be on the top 10 greatest songs of all time, if a list like this exists. It is sooth sounding, but also powerful at the same time. Every track in this song is in sync and melody with each other, which makes it one hellova great song. The vocals, the guitar, the rhythm, and definitely the drums, are all amazing.

The music is beautiful but I never stop to wonder what the lyrics meant. It's sex!!! Holy Shit.

"And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang"

Damn Dave. I didn't know you made such explicit songs. Lol

Okay okay, so I have to agree, this is probably the best foo fighters song.... In fact, there is very few songs that can give me the kind of feeling this one does, which im not going to even try to explain. This song is so perfect in just how it is put together from a lyrical and musical standpoint, props to Dave Grohl, its one thing to have this good sounding of a song, or having this deep of a song, but having both at once is very tough to come by.

Anyways, i get this is a love song, and i get most parts of the song, and most the time im good at seeing the metaphors in a song, especially if i know what the song is about overall, but if someone could help me, or even give me some ideas to what some of them mean, such as (maybe im just really stupid)the singing metaphor? what does that symbolize? is he using the word sing as code for sex? the lines:

The only thing
I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

it still doesnt make sense... i get the rest of the song... but what the hell does that part mean?

and i know i should just ask what it means to me, i know what the rest of the song does, and maybe some songs shouldnt be "dissected" but that part is so weird to me and its driving me crazy.

PS- sorry if that was already answered or asked in one of the bazillion posts, i got to page 3 and reading them got really old, so i figured id just ask rather than try to look for it.

didnt read all the comments so i'm not sure if this has been said already, but alot of people are demeaning the pure beauty of the song by saying its all about sex. i really think its so much more than that. its all about love, finding someone that makes you feel alive and that feeling of being completely vulnerable yet in pure bliss at the same time, a feeling that sex alone can never capture.
"If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again" isnt necessarily referring to the physical, get your head out of the gutter, anyone whos really been in love knows this feeling all too well. you feel like you'll never be this happy again...and its almost a sad feeling if it werent so happy.
also when he says
"The only thing I'll ever ask of you
Got to promise not to stop when I say when" i doubt hes just saying "please dont stop f**king me" i think hes referring to a relatively new relationship. both of them are surprised at what they feel and though they originally wanted to take it slow to protect themselves, they see their love spinning out of control and despite the danger they don't want to stop.
i dunno, thats just my take on it, your all welcome to your own opinions i guess. im not usually the type to speak up here but i kinda had to say something this time... beautiful song, one of my favorites

um, this song is catchy, but is not a great song lyrically. I like it alot as a song, but what depth is there to the lyrics? They seemed contrived, especially "You got to promise not to promise when I say when." It's just another song about a relationship, and does not deserve all the attention it's getting for lyrical prowess

This song seems to be about when the crowd sings along at concerts. Read the lyrics and it seems like having them sing along is his favority part of concerts. I love this song.

Well...it's one fantastic song. I've never heard such a combination of frenetic pacing and desperation put together with jazz chords set to a killer rock beat. Although this song is about love and sex, it's really about desperation...almost that two people want to disappear into each other, as tho that were possible. To me this song is about a desperate search for meaning, expressing the desire that a fleeting experience could be made permanent and blot out the pain of otherwise mundane and ordinary existence. "Come down and waste away with me" means "join me in my hopeless condition so I don't have to be alone there, and take me away from my pain with sex that almost substitutes for real meaning, that makes me forget myself."

(Didn't read all of the comments, so sorry if this was already addressed)

As far as what is being whispered in the background during the interlude towards the end of the song:

'Apparently Dave scrambled three audio tracks together so as to distort
what you, the listener, hear. To this date, no one has been able
to decipher exactly what is being said, but we do know that one track
is a love letter being read, one track is a technical manual being
read, and the last track is a story about one of the studio technician's
father.'

That's supposedly it. These are supposed to be the Studio Technician's story about his father:

"So dad would take the sunday's off
and that's the only time he could ever get any rest
and so if we were loud on sundays
he'd make us hold his construction suits over our head
till we'd sleep and they were really heavy
and it only had one sleeve
but we'd start crying because it's too heavy...so"

and this is supposed to be what the love letter or whatever is saying:

"Sometimes in life we wander aimlessly,
Searching for a purpose, searching for ourselves.
And yet, sometimes in life, we are so oblivious to the obvious
Because everything is right in front of us
And we're missing the point of living
We're missing the point of living"

If anyone can confirm or deny, that would be great.. as for what is being said in terms of the instruction manual--does anyone have a clue in that department? I'd like to know all 3.

everyone loves this song for some reason...i thinks its a good song but i think it's a little too epic...like being epic for epic's sake...the emotion in songs like my poor brain, wind up, enough space and walking after you far surpass this song...not to mention those are by far the best songs on the disc
