"Everlong" is the second single released from Foo Fighters' second album The Colour and the Shape, released in 1997. The song was conceived when Dave Grohl returned home to Washington, D.C., following the initial recording...

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight I throw myself in two
Out of the red
Out of her head she sang

Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

General Comment:The wonderful thing about a song is that it can mean whatever you want it to. I think in it's most basic form, this song is about sex. But it can mean so much more if you dig deeper.

My husband and I chose the acoustic version of Everlong as our first dance. To us, this song is about true love.

"Hello, I've waiting her for you, Everlong" - You are the special one I've been waiting for.

"breathe out so I can breathe you in, hold you in" - being close, holding each other and/or be yourself around me, so I can cherish everything about you.

"Come down and waste away with me, Down with me" - we get caught up in life, come down from all the craziness and just enjoy 'us' with me

"the only thing I ever ask of you, gotta promise not to stop when I say when" - the only thing I want from you, is to never let me go. If I ever want to give up on us, don't let me.

"And I wonder, When I sing along with you, If everything could ever feel this real forever, If anything could ever be this good again" - Our relationship is so good right now, I can't imagine it could get any better.

    It's beautiful!!

My Interpretation:"Out of the red" as I see it could refer to doing better financially. Being out of the red therefore being in the black, in the money. Goes back to the days of recording debt in red in ledgers.

Could also be a reference to a red spotlight onstage. In & out of the red. She too is a performer. So the stanzas are about he & she. Of course what kind of performance are they involved in? Music? Love-making? Why not both? Just living.

    The opening lyric:

    Hello
    I've waited here for you
    Everlong

It touches the heart. He's been waiting for her all his life. And finally she arrived. (I suspect she got to him as fast as she could.)

General Comment:He wrote this song when he was down and out and thought his band life might fail completely and never hit the concerts again, he wrote this song out of a desperate, probably inspired moment in his life.

General Comment:Here's something to quit any stupid theory. Everlong is about a GIRL Dave fell in love when he divorced from his first wife. You can hear him saying it in this interview with Howard Stern:

General Comment:This song is more about just having sex. This is song transcend to that Spiritual level that is even better than just having sex. If you ever been in love, I mean truly in love, you will definitely understand the meaning of this song.

There is nothing like new love, when everything in the world doesn't matter except the person you love. You wish that feeling could last forever. But like everything, it starts falling apart. That is why the song keeps iterating the moments when he felt rapturous and holds on to those moments, never letting them go, even when the time comes when letting go seems like the solution.

Song Meaning:Everlong was written against the background of the break-up of Dave Grohl's first marriage to photographer Jennifer Youngblood. Having returned home to Virginia for Christmas 1996, Grohl turned the initial riff into a complete song and wrote the lyrics after falling for a new woman, "That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonise perfectly."[

General Comment:It obviously has sexually meaning. I think it is also about death, from the point of view of Death. "Hello, I've waited here for you everlong" = Death has been waiting for "you" for "your" whole life.
"Out of the red, out of her head she sang" = She was bleeding (blood is red) and screaming.
"if anything could ever feel this good again" = Death can only be felt one time, the first and the last.
"Breathe out so I can breathe you in, hold you in"= Exhale so Death can suck the life out of you! :)
The blurry spoken bit of it makes me think of a suicidal person. I can always make out "I just want to sleep - permanently", meaning "I just want to die". It's a pretty complex song.
