My Hero Lyrics
Too alarming now to talk about
Take your pictures down and shake it out Truth or consequence, say it aloud Use that evidence, race it around There goes my hero Watch him as he goes There goes my hero He's ordinary Don't the best of them bleed it out While the rest of them peter out Truth or consequence, say it aloud Use that evidence, race it around There goes my hero Watch him as he goes There goes my hero He's ordinary Kudos my hero leaving all the best You know my hero, the one that's on There goes my hero Watch him as he goes There goes my hero He's ordinary |

besides, lets take a look at something:
the lyric "..don't the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of them peter out.."
cobain certainly petered out, which is completely contradictory to what hes writing about.
this is also explained at this link:
http://www.fooarchive.com/features/kerrangjune06.htm
after reading that, you should now see that this song is NOT ABOUT cobain. it is inspired by how others view their heroes.

B) is Dave sining about 1 person (KK) when he says "Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out"
C) Dave wouldn't need to tell people to "watch" Kurt as he goes as everybody was already looking at him due to his being so 'unordinary' (in a good way)
i do think dave sings for the everyday solid reliable person....but think what i will great song

What kind of hero were you thinking of?
"Heroes are a funny thing. When I was young I had KISS posters and I listened to Rush and thought the Beatles were magicians. But the real heroes in my life were people that I was close to. Pete Stahl who was the singer of Scream (Grohl's pre-Nirvana band) was one. I was 17 years old when we hit the road and that guy showed me the ropes, so to me he was a hero. And family members ...my mom's a saint. She raised two kids with no money and we managed to be a happy family, so she seems like a hero to me."
Did Kurt Cobain figure in your thinking at all?
"After Kurt died, the whole idea of hero worship or idolatry warped into something I thought was strange. You take a human being and you turn them into a deity. It's really bizarre. I remember I was driving around Ireland when I was trying to get away from that whole fiasco after Kurt died. I was in the middle of nowhere and it was beautiful. But then I was driving down a country road and I saw a hitch hiker with a Kurt Cobain t-shirt on so my perception of a hero kind of changed. If you listen to the lyrics to the song it's all about an ordinary hero. Just a regular person."
THERE YA GO.

It makes sense...how else would a songwriter pay homage to a great friend?

Take your pictures down and shake it out
The first two lines talk about the amazement of the speaker at what the hero is doing with what seems to be an ordinary body, yet there is nothing special about the pictures the speaker has of him, per-say. The next two lines seem to be about truth or dare, trying to come up with a dare that one-ups the truth that the hero is talking about (perhaps from the pictures), then we the hero does another heroic deed that proves himself true.
The next three lines, the chorus, our hero is walking past the speaker. I like to imagine that he picks up the speaker like a child or lover (I know David is a guy) and takes them along.
Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out
The hero bleeds like any normal person, but even in his humanity he is stronger then the weaknesses of those around him.
I always thought that "He's ordinary" was "Curtain as the sun," till I read the lyrics, which to me makes more sense because 'He's ordinary' seems to contradict the rest of the song. Obviously, a hero is not ordinary, he or she might seem ordinary to those around them. I like to imagine a hero stepping sure footed through adversity even though that might not be the case.
The last two lines that are different:
Kudos my hero leaving all the best
You know my hero, the one that's on
I always thought that kudos seems a little sarcastic as a word, that could be everyone else giving him praise that falls short of the original and continuing accomplishments. Then the speaker says:
"You know _______ the one that helped you, saved you, rebuilt you, deterred danger etc.... and is still doing so." Reminding everyone else what the hero did for them even though the speaker knows.

Dave writing this about Kurt Cobain, his bestfriend,
and watching him get overrun by drug abuse.
Kurt being Dave's hero going on the path of abuse (There Goes My Hero).
