Lyrics for My Hero as interpreted by me109cito

My Hero Lyrics
Too alarming now to talk about
Take your pictures down and shake it out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary
Kudos my hero leaving all the best
You know my hero, the one that's on
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary

Actually, the lines:

Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out

are about the note that was found with Kurt's dead body that said, "It's better to burn out than to fade away".

And:

"Use that evidence, race it around"

I believe is about the case surrounding Kurt's death. A lot of people believe that Courtney Love hired a hit man to kill Kurt, and there is enough evidence in that speculation to support it....

when i first heard this song, i thought it was about the ordinary people in life who do hero things, but looking at the other posts does show me that this song can be a tribute to kurt cobain. i can interpret it two ways now! i like this song twice as much! yay!

I hear you Lightning J, that's exactly what happened to me: I thought it was about the ordinary people (the car mechanics, the janitors, the accountants, etc...but then I came here and was like...Kurt Cobain...eh, I don't WANT it to be...but it appears it is...sooooo........

From Kerrang! Issue 1112:
K!: Did Kurt Cobain figure in your thinking at all?
"After Kurt died, the whole idea of hero worship or idolatry warped into something I thought was strange. You take a human being and you turn them into a deity. It's really bizarre. I remember I was driving around Ireland when I was trying to get away from that whole fiasco after Kurt died. I was in the middle of nowhere and it was beautiful. But then I was driving down a country road and I saw a hitch hiker with a Kurt Cobain t-shirt on so my perception of a hero kind of changed. If you listen to the lyrics in the song it's all about an ordinary hero. Just a regular person."

The song may well be about Kurt, or it may about some other specific person, but the video tells a different story, and I'd like to touch on that.
For those who haven't seen it, it shows what seems to be an ordinary guy, who's face we never see, running in to a building to save a baby, a pet, and a picture, IIRC.

I think the statement the video was trying to make was that this guy was ordinary for his whole life- probably a good guy, but no one you'd read a book about. But in those few moments, when he rushed into that fire, he was more than ordinary- he was a hero. I think that's a little inspiring... to know that even if you don't run around in a cape and tights, even if you're ordinary with a face no one will remember, you can still be a hero, even if its only once.

Foo Fighters > Nirvana

Anyways, the thought of this song just being about someone who becomes a hero from just being an average joe doing his job or trying to help someone out makes this song so much better than saying it's about Cobain.

I agree about the whole "Ordinary Hero" idea...But i'd also like to mention this:
The ordinary people in my life are my hero's My mum n dad are my Hero's. So to me its about them. My mum and dad are heros, legends even in my eyes and they'd do anything for me and my siblings.
But i got given another meaning for this song. When my boyfriend's mum died they played this at her funeral.."There goes my hero" "Kudos my hero, leaving all the best"

Both thoughts are right. Read the quote Stider3005 has above its from Dave. Kurt inspired in the song, but its about ordinary everyday people and what we are capable of...being a Hero in some capacity.

its deffff. about a kurt. Though he was an amazing writer and person all around, he was full of the rot from the past. Even the night he hit it big on snl he hadnt taken a shower in weeks.
"Don't the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out" Kurt just kept it all bottled up until he couldnt live with himself anymore and boom it was over. He tried to be such a great person, but never wanted to admit his past or his drug addiction. The evidence was deffanatly around after 3 or 4 attempts it ws destened to happen. This was daves final goodbyes to Kurt his true hero.

okay, to the ones who thinks it's about kurt cobain.. IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT! just read the lyrics? "there goes my hero, he's ordinary" an ORDINARY person! simple, ordinary, common... pick one.
btw, "my hero" and "everlong" is the 2 best songs of foo fighters!

Here's another quote in an article from 1999 by Stephen Dowling:

[Dave's] careful - after the fuss at admitting 'The Colour And The Shape's 'My Hero' was a reference in part to Kurt Cobain - in unveiling too much outside of the song.

"I think the 'My Hero' thing got a little out of control, the song was supposed to be a general statement. When you hand someone specifics of a song it kind of loses its mystery... that song was supposed to be very general, the idea of heroes should be more human than superhuman. When I was growing up my heroes were my mother and my best friend Johnny Park, my heroes were heroes I knew and respected. It wasn't Kiss, I didn't want to grow up to be Gene Simmons, I wanted to grow up and be like my friend Pete. Kurt was another good example of a person you see and you have so much respect and love for and you envy this something they have, and they become a hero for you. It's not a statue of Napoleon, it's a human being."

This song is in honour of Cobain, im sure. I think its about the way Dave saw Kurts addiction and the lead up to his death. 'He's ordinary
Don't the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of them peter out' sounds like that even the strongest of people can be affected by drugs and that they can get over it or just give up... whatever the Foos are mad, just as mad as Nirvana was...

To be honest, im surprised no one has posted the actual meaning behind this song. My Hero is not about Kurt Cobain, rest his soul, but it is about Jim Craig, the goalie for the USA Olympic Hockey Team of 1980.

The same team that the movie "Miracle" was based on.

grohl met him once, and then wrote the song. i mean really. its not obvious, but its def. not about a junky named kurt cobain.

Thank goodness there are like minded people on here! I really don't think it is about Kurt and it pisses me off that kurt fans hang on to dave as if he has the power to bring him back and sings about him in every song! Sorry if I'm being offensive but please! Dave has said its about ordinary heros and he probably only said it has a little bit to do with Kurt because he had death threats or something from hardcore Cobain fans. I am not dissing Kurt I am just saying is not all of his songs are to do with Kurt and this one isn't.

nah I know where Nadine is coming from but I reckon the song is both.
I think he's saying, there goes my hero; he's ordinary - like any ordinary guy he admires because he feels that he's pressured to live under the 'rock and roll lifestyle'' and he admires Kurt because kurt didnt buckle under the media - he was just himself the whole time and he didnt care.

PS nobody make any wise cracks about ''Kurt not buckling under media pressure'' - i get the irony

kisses,
godsmuki

I don't think this song is about just Kurt, I think it's bout Krist aswell. They're still really good friends.

I think it can relate to anyone though.
