Lyrics for Straight Edge as interpreted by me109cito

Straight Edge Lyrics
i'm a person just like you
but i've got better things to do
then sit around and fuck my head
hang out with the living dead
snort white shit up my nose
pass out at the shows
i don't even think about speed
thats something i just don't need

i've got the straight edge

i'm a person just like you
but i've got better things to do
then sit around and smoke dope
cause i know that i can cope
laugh at the thought of eating ludes
laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
always gonna keep in touch
never want to use a crutch

i've got the straight edge

Ian never ment to start a movement. His idea of straight edge was never ment to be absoloutly no drinking, smoking, or drugs. His meaning was staying true to yourself. But it all changed. Oh well, I got sXe.

Dudes, he wanted to put an end to peer pressure and the distractions that are drugs, promiscuous sex, and alcohol abuse. Himself, among others were sick and tired of watching friends burnout on drugs or knock up some ho early on in life. It was a philosophy of taking care of one's body, they believe that the body and mind is pure and unspoiled...they want to keep it that way. Wow Ian drinks now? Hmm oh well being edge for 20 years is pretty impressive unlike kids nowadays who break it after only hours. Being sXe should be a personal choice and not a mob. The only reason kids wore the X's was to unite at shows and show love to their peers.

I really look up to this dude as the creator of sXe even though he didn't really meant to invent a lifestyle. I'm sad now that hes a drinker. F*ck drugs, premarital sex, beer and cigars! I've got the sXe too - xXx

Definitely one of the most controversial hardcore songs ever (side by side with another hardcore song, Earth Crisis's Firestorm). Although "In My Eyes" is what straight edge kids "abide by", this is the song that created a subculture.

Personally, I decided some time ago that I did not want to consider myself straight edge. However, I think that if someone is straight edge for themself and their own well-being, kudos to them. When it becomes an issue of an attempt at rebellion or a reason to enact violence, it hurts the straight edge label for the rest.

Alternately, I find it pathetic when kids tone down their drug use slightly, call themselves straight edge, and then start everything right back up. Those are the kids only looking for excuses to label themselves in some form or another, whether it is "druggie" or "straight edger". That is when a person really has to be called to question.

Oh, and Ian always drank in quantities, I'm pretty sure. He was just strongly against addictions in any form. One of the other members (I'm thinking Brian Baker, but I could be wrong) smoked marijuana while in Minor Threat, hence the speech on the live "Out of Step" on the discography.

well for the most part you guys are right, but no guys ian does not drink. i saw him at the fort reno show and him with this and he was actually ANGRY that i would say that. he's still as sXe as ever, although i don't know if he's married and had kids or whatever, cuz joe lally had, but whatever. i ditto on every comment to fuck drugs alcohol and permiscuous sex, and finally id like to add that if you guys really want to know THE Minor Threat story check out a book called "Our Band Could Be Your LIfe" at your library or buy it somewhere, its a truly awesome book, the story of 11 (i think) punk and hard core bands from late 70's to early 90's. its really worth anywones time if they want to know the story behind huge indie names like husker du, minutemen, mission of burma, black flag, minor threat, dinosaur jr, sonic youth and a few others. definitly worth a purchase, but if not at least seek it out at the library.

this is a good song. it definetly gave me direction and a sense of belonging when i was like 15. before this i didnt know what sXe was i just knew drinkin and smokin werent for me. then a couple of kids told me about sXe and now im almost 19 (wow im gettin old) and have gone through a year of college without any alcohol or cigs touching me lips. also for my senior quote in my year book i choose "always gonna keep in touch never gonna use a crutch ive got the straight edge" which im glad to say i still think is a fitting quote. stay sXe.

"The only reason kids wore the X's was to unite at shows and show love to their peers."

uhm...no...not at all, back in the 80's when you were under 21 they put X's on your hands so they new you couldnt drink and the culture just kind of tagged it on. also, he did not define straight edge, coin the term or anything of the sort just wrote a damn good song about it. teen idles were calling themselves straight edge before this song came out. ive been sXe for two and a half years, this being after getting over an addiction to anxiety medication that almost killed me. i wont even take prescriptions or drink caffeine now, i want to keep my body as pure as possible. ive never really worn X's, only at shows where i know there will be drugs. i dont preach though, thats just annoying.

where are you people getting the idea that ian is now a drinker??? he's not! ok? i just read in an article about him that he is still as sXe as ever! geez, so this is how rumours start... and also about the teen idles, ian mackaye was in the band (frontman of minor threat, obviously) and they were the first DISCHORD band. they were not calling themselves straight edge, that term was not coined until this song was written by ian himself when he joined minor threat. the teen idles did however put x's on their hands, its on the front cover of their album "minor disturbance". this was so that underage kids who went to see shows would not be allowed to drink. after the song "straight edge" was released kids tapped in to using the x's to show that they were straight edge, since it ment that they weren't allowed to drink at shows anyway. as a matter of fact, the teen idles had a song called "milk and coke", which obviously coins their two favorite and much-preffered beverages. its cool to see lots of straight edgers gravitate here.

keep sXe alive,

i heard somewhere that ian in fact did not coin the term but the drummer did. The story goes like this, while they were making a poster for an upcoming show the drummer used a rulers straightedge to kind of compare their lifestyle to. Thats all i heard, i dont know if its true, though.

i got my info from someone i know who was in the NYHC scene back in the early 80s so i trust it, it didnt come from an article.

This is a great song. its a bout being true to yourself. n e one who has to be high or drunk to have fun must be REAL boring sobar. id rather enjoy life and remeber life for what is really was, not for what drugs made it. its bad for your body, and everyone does it, y would i wanna be like everyone else!!

i don't understand the straightedge movement. I mean, i think anyone who stands alone and says "I'm staying clean" is fuckin hardcore, but someone who needs a whole movement and a nice little symbol to do it is just there tryin to fit in... even though i quit using drugs and i've been sobre for a year you'll never hear me call myself straightedge. I can do it without wearing an X
