Hey mister, where you headed?
Are you in a hurry?
I need a lift to happy hour say oh no
Do you brake for distilled spirits?
I need a break aswell
The well that inebriates the guilt
1,2,1,2,3,4

Cold turkey's getting stale
Tonight I'm eating crow
Fermented salmonella poison oak no
There's a drought at the fountain of youth
And I'm dehydrating
My tongue is swelling up
I say 1,2,1,2,3,4

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitchin' a ride

There's a drought at the fountain of youth
And now I'm dehydrating
My tongue is swelling up
I say
Shit!

Troubled times
You know I cannot lie
I'm off the wagon and I'm hitchin' a ride
Hitchin' a ride [*8]

General Comment:It's about troubles with alcohol.
    So it's lines like;

There's a drought at the fountain of youth
    And I'm dehydrating
    My tongue is swelling up

It shows the problem he's got with stop drinking

My Opinion:God, I love this song. The lyrics/songwriting are just phenomenal, especially the second verse. Billie Joe is a genius.

General Comment:Hitchhiking or calling for a cab in order to get cheap drinks at the bar, and drinking to forget about problems. Alcoholism is more exciting than being sober as it's intoxicating and impairs your judgment, the subject in this song appears to have a long history with alcohol and may even be hitching a ride because he lost his license due to a D.U.I.

General Comment:Maybe the song is just one of many metaphors to the wonders and suckishness that is getting completely hammered. I mean, a lot of drunks seem to hitchhike (or at least, they try to). Also, if you're inebriated, you're not really gonna pay attention, and end up eating REALLY old food at some dingy diner (don't ask how I know these things...)
