Lyrics for Basket Case as interpreted by kevin

Basket Case Lyrics
Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once
I am one of those
Melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone
No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up
I think I'm cracking up
Am I just paranoid ?
I'm just stoned

I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
And quit my whining cause it's bringing her down

Grasping to control
So you better hold on

Well, just one final thing: I'll be either at The Ramones, Queen or Bowie. Sometimes Pink Floyd and Led Zep, if you ever feel the need to bicker. :-)

Punk Barbie 52, the band members are punks, but their music is classified as alternative rock by most sources.

This is also my theme song..My favorite Green Day song...also, GD is punk, but it's not completely rebellious...everyone is starting to love them, including the supposed "preps"...well as R.E.M. would put it, "It's the end of the world as we know it."....

green day was the last punk band, when they was dormant for those couple years, punk didn't really die, it just changed, for the worse in my opinion. Green Day is no longer punk.

I've spent some time thinking about the "shrink/whore" verse's gender disagreement, because syntax errors bother me. my conclusion is this-
I went to a shrink
To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
And quit my whining cause it's bringing her down
The narrator, let's assume Billie Joe, visited a male prostitute, let's call him "John". John told Billie Joe that Billie Joe's life was boring, and that Billie Joe needs to 'quit his whining' because it's bringing down a third party female, let's call her "Female".
It is common knowledge that Billie Joe identifies as bisexual(see the advocate, 1995), so it is likely that Billie Joe had a relationship with a female at the time of the song's composition, yet he was interested in male/male sex. The stress of attempting to maintain heterosexual monogamy with Female would have prompted Billie Joe to see a Psychiatrist, who would have then advised BJ to experiment with his sexuality, as in "lack of sex that's brining me down." The last line of the verse is John telling Billie Joe that Female is upset with BJ because of BJ's whining.
It has classic American fiction irony that the man with whom Billie Joe is cheating would be the one to give Billie Joe the answer to his relationship woes, quite simply, "stop whining." It reminds me of Flannery O'Connor, although I doubt the men of Green Day were comparing their songwriting to a mid-20th-century author.
Long story short, a male prostitute is the "He," and he is the speaker of the last two lines. The "her" of the last line is the male prostitute referencing Billie Joe's female significant other. I hope that wasn't too complicated. Any thoughts?

Green Day are still punk seeing as American Idiot was voted no 10 of greatest punk songs ever. Punk is an attitude not a music genre, but these guys r sooo punk.
hengehbm - that does make sense. Maybe Billie says "who says my life's a bore" but probably not. Gd idea. WTF is alt rock n how can u say what music genre is what?

I's consider myself as a hardcore hip hop fan. I'm not reeeeeeeeeeeeally a fan of punk/alt. rock/skate etc. but this song is great. I think it really is like an anthem and it really gives you a lively energy. Green Day absolutely kick ass.

At my camp, we had a camp radio station (cool eh)
and when they played "still waiting" by Sum 41 all the guys in my troop started singing it, and they laughed at me when i asked what it was called. I had my revenge when they played Basket Case, the only Green Day song all week. There was me, singing alone, all the words PERFECTLY. I LOVE THIS SONG.

p.s. Green Day IS punk, and they wipe sum 41 and all the other "punk" bands

This is a great song. Billie is wonderfully crazy in the music video. In fact, I'd say he was loopy. Yeah, I think I'd have to give him a loopy for that.

awesome song. i dunno about musicall speaking, but what punk means to me is NOT CARING WHAT THE HELL PEEPLE SAY TO YOU, ABOUT YOU, OR BEHIND YOUR BACK, DOING THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT PEOPLE WANT JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT, ONE OF THOSE GUYS WHO JUST SAYS SCREW THAT AND DOES WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS TO. THATS PUNK.

green day used to be punk. american idiot, altho its about rebeling against the government and his childhood heroes and all that crap, is not true punk. but label it whatever the hell you want, its still music.

love this song. awesome. play it with my band, always gets the crowd going. means a lot to me altho he probably did write it when he was atleast partly stoned still, lol...

song that i can relate to the most... It's about Billie's anxiety from his panic disorder. When he wrote this song, he thought he was going nuts. But then he went to a doctor and figured out it was just a Panic disorder... which i have also... and which have suffered from for most of my life
