today if i were to take the basic formulas from punk standards invented by ramones....i would get a drummer, a bassist, and a guitarist. have the drummer do a driving fast beat and have the guitars do a 3 chord riff and if we played them together and sung a song about whatever it wouldnt be considered punk i guess. whats not so punk about this song? if you ask me i would say ramones are probably biggest pop punk bands...doesnt mean they suck.

first of all, green day are one of the main reasons punk rock was reincarnated in the mid 90s. alt rock is bands like hoobastank and story of the year. now, basket case is deffinatly a song i can relate to myself. its about a guy who thinks he's going crazy and tries to see a shrink and stuff, but no one can help him.

very anxiety-ridden song, this one is. Billie Joe said he had panic attacks (apparently still does, the poor thing) and didn't know what else to do but write about it.

by the way--Green Day is punk. trust me on that. they may not sound like the Sex Pistols did back in the 70's, but they're punk. styles do change, after all.

I've read that this song was inspired by J.D. Salinger's Catcher In the Rye. If you've read it, it makes sense.

Hah, yeah a shrink is like someone you talk to when you have problems, look it up at www.dictionary.com..

And for you guys arguing if Green day is punk or not... Why don't you go kick yourself in the but or something, arguing if a band is punk or not is the moast dorky thing you could do!, What do you wanna prove with it? Really it doesn't change the music at all and green day will keep playing the same stuff even though you call them Alt rock or what ever.. Grow up!

Haha, its funny when people debate other's 'punkness'. Anyway, I always took the supposed "her/him mixup" as people call it, to mean something eles. The shrink is a woman and the whore, a man, why I dont knwo, but the second chick that is refferd to ("quit my whinning cause it's bringing her down") is someone else entirely. The whinning is bringing down like a girlfriend or something. I don't know, I guess that's just what I thought.

Hmm, im going to put some petrol on the flames and say that I think this song is actually pop/punk. But when I say pop i dont mean crappy kiddie pop. I mean pop as in popular commercial music, in the same way that The Beatles are Pop, Queen are Pop and people like Billy Joel are pop. Good Pop. You can't say that they aren't commercial, they sell lots of records and are liked by lots of people, thats a good thing. Especially as they are actually making good music. This is one hell of a quality song. So yeah, they're punk, but they're the pop sub genre of punk.

ok that whole him and her thing in the "i went to a whore" part was totally on purpose, they could have fixed the lyrics to make sense but its about being stoned or going crazy or something, it shouldnt make sense and thats why they put it that way
