Well technically Basket Case was a slang word first used in the trenches of WWI (along with many others....) I don't know maybe he just thought it was cool.

This song is about Billie Joe's Panic disorder when he was younger, however i also feel thet it reflects the paranoia from all the drugs that he used to consume,

I believe that this song is about Billie Joe's panic disorder and it makes perfect sense. I think its stupid that people are saying its about a chick in the breakfast club. Why would Green Day care about that stupid movie? Well, as I was saying.. this is a great song and Billie Joe writes fantastic lyrics. And to argue against most people on this website;; Green Day is the only bend that has made so many come backs and still manages to be amazing. Their history is phenomenal. And look now, they are coming back again with their new album coming out in May.

I don't know why everyone is arguing whether Green Day is Punk or Alternative. It's really simple. They were punk up to American Idiot. American Idiot was totally Alternative. Anyway all their music is amazing

Sheepofthefarm, where the hell did you heard that? I have never heard that, even though I thought I knew everything there is to know about Green Day.

But anyways... you people are right it's about panic attacks and being neurotic... Haha :) I can relate to. except the prostitute part, and also not as much as I can relate to Armatage Shanks. Both great songs, but with Armatage shanks... oh man, it's just that I feel like it's about me. I love both songs, Billie Joe was and still is a fuckin' genius.

This song is not about Ally Sheedy's character in The Breakfast Club. The only reason why people make that connection is because she is referred to as a basket case at the beginning of the movie. If it is so, how do you explain the second verse with the shrink and the whore? In other words, you can connect this song to anyone that is a basket case, but it doesn't change the fact that Billie Joe Armstrong wrote it about panic attacks.

Most if Billys lyrics are about personal problems. Billy says this song is about being neurotic and trying to grasp some control of ur life and feeling maladjusted. There was a time when he was hanging out with a prostitute , they were friends. Most people go to a psychologist with their problems , but he hung out with this prostitute who helped him through his problems. The "he" that he refers to , are the men who go to whores with their problems.

Personally, I like very much the

part and I understand as an ironic part of the lyrics about the fact of some people giving the very simplistic answer "Your problem is that you need sex/a girlfriend" in a Freudian explanation, for every individual who suffers from some mental illness or anything that can be anything else than that. It's an irony that the shrink will explain every of your problem with sex but the whore will still not be the cure..
