A decade ago
I never thought I would be
At twenty-three
On the verge of spontaneous combustion
Wo-is-me

But I guess that it comes with the territory
An ominous landscape of never ending calamity
I need you to hear
I need you to see that I have had all that I can take
And exploding seems like a definite possibility to me

So pardon me while I burst into flames
Pardon me while I burst into flames
I've had enough of the world and it's people's mindless games
So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me, I'll never be the same

Not two days ago
I was having a look in a book
And I saw a picture of a guy fried up above his knee
I said, 'I can relate?'
Cause lately I've been thinking of combustication
As a welcomed vacation
From the burdens of the planet earth

Like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D
And thinking so much differently

So pardon me while I burst into flames
I've had enough of the world and it's people's mindless games
So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me, I'll never be the same

Like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D
And thinking so much differently

My Interpretation:The Phoenix rises from the flames and ashes and flies. This is so straight forward. Stop torturing the lyrics.

My Interpretation:Great song...probably one of my faves from Incubus from way back...
That aside, I always felt that this song was a bit about hitting your 20's and comming into a quarter-life crisis moment. That moment when you realized the world is full of shit and nothing you're doing or have done is getting you anywhere...hence the whole, "A decade ago,
I never thought I would be, At twenty-three, On the verge of spontaneous combustion, Wo-is-me."
To me, it sounds like its basically about being young and dealing with the frustrations that early adulthood throws at you....that as you get older, most days are going to make you feel like "combustication, As a welcomed vacation, From the burdens of the planet earth," but that the important thing is to deal with it and move on
    .
"So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me, I'll never be the same"

This part of the song is a perfect example of my previous argument...and probably one of my favorite parts of the song too. It takes a bit of a sarcastic turn in my opinion, with the whole "pardon me" bit...it doesn't really come off as apologizing sincerely but more like a "sorry, not sorry really" statement. Basically, it comes off a bit like "I'm realizing a bunch of shitty stuff at the moment, but its ok...I'm going to deal with this and rise above it on my own terms and hopefully come off as a better person afterward. By the way, I'm not the least bit sorry if the way I'm dealing with all of this is making you uncomfortable."

Anyway...that's just my two cents on the subject.

General Comment:"Pardon Me" is a song about the welling homosexual feelings Brandon feels at 23, but he keeps bottling them up to the outside world, to the point of "spontaneous combustion." As a result, he will "burst into the flames." "Flames" has a homosexual connotation--homosexuals are referred to as "flaming" or "flamers." Brandon is simply saying he is going to come to grips with this lifestyle and "rise above" all of the negativity attributed to it in our culture. The bit about him "having a look in a book" is him looking at a gay porno mag where a guy is getting "fried" (a word for sexual penetration) in an area "up above his knee" (his anus). Brandon says, "now I can relate" because he feels those desires as a result of the sexual acts these men are partaking in, and lately he's been thinking of "combustication" (a made up word, but can be read as a euphemism for orgasm on a fellow male). Like all sexual acts we enjoy, it's a "welcomed vacation from the burdens of planet Earth" and the everyday troubles we encounter.

General Comment:This song is about Brandon Boyd getting so fed up with the world and its inhabitants senseless way of thinking. He wants to start his life over with a clean slate like the bird called a phoenix does. The phoenix is a bird that lives its life in cycles. It burns up into flames when its old and is recreated back in to its infantile self with a perfectly "clean slate". Brandon wants to recreate himself in a new life or reincarnate as the same life vessel if you will.

first time i heard pardon me, i rushed to buy the album....and put this song on repeat. no joke i listened to to this song on repeat for atleast 2 hours. ( i had a movie on mute ) 11 years later, i still love this song.

this song transcends anything else i've ever heard.

General Comment:I personally believe it's about suicide.

    "I've been thinking of combustication
as a welcomed vacation from the burdens of the planet earth."

Technically it's illegal to commit suicide and according to many major religions immoral. And that's enough to make you want to shoot yourself, knowing that you don't even have a legal right to take your own life. That people just mindlessly judge you constantly. Pardon me if I want to choose what I want to do with my own life. Pardon me that your a dumba**.

My Interpretation:The first albums where more psychedelics, u can tell that on the lyrics, the music (Deep Inside, Favorite Things, Hilikus, Azwethinkweiz, etc). After Make Yourself, Incubus started changing his music to a more pop-like one. I believe that's related to the discontinuation of drug use the band experienced. I remember Dirk Lance saying "Kids, stay away from pot". How the hell could he say something like that? I believe this song is about drugs, It's the way Brandon talks about his experience with drugs. There's a point where many ppl regret taking drugs, and maybe this was Boyd's way to express it and even "warn" us, somehow. "I need you to hear, I need you to see that I have had all I can take and exploding seems like a definite possibility to me". Maybe he never thought he was goin to reach that point, "A decade ago, I never thought I would be, at twenty three, on the verge of spontaneous combustion". I believe psychedelics can change the way u see things, he clearly says that at "lately I've been thinking of combustication as a welcomed vacation from the burdens of the planet earth.
Like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D...and thinking so much differently". But somehow, there's regret in there. Maybe I'm not being so much clear, it's a little bit hard for me to make myself clear. I actually listened to this song while high and that's the message I got.

General Comment:I love this song. Its so beautiful. "Pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame". Its like he's saying you can go on with your own drama, but I'm going to rise above it. Like, I've already burned myself up with meaningless problems, now I'm going to rise above. I love it.
