This is easily one of my top three GD songs. I love how you can feel the "passion" in his voice when he sings it. It's just about sitting around, being bored, going outta your mind. It's awesome.

You Guys got it right for the most part. The Song isnt just about masturbation, it describes punk lifestyle. Just because masturbation is mentioned doesnt mean thats what the whole song is about.

yeah, I always thought it doesnt sound like he's singing "breaking" too, but I don't know what he sings, cause on the other hand the CD booklet also says "breaking" so...

And I agree not just about masturbation, but boredom... oh the bordom. I know what's it like I dont have a job at the moment.

I'm actually from Longview Washington, and my cousin who was a big Green day fan back in the mid 90's told me they named it after our town. And I've heard that a lot in other places as well, so I assume it's the truth. So yeah I can tell people my home town is the inspiration for this song LOL. Here's something taken from wikipedia.

The title of the song "Longview" by the rock band Green Day was inspired by the city. The pop-punk trio had several friends in the area due to frequent performances in Portland, Oregon. Often they would meet other punk acts from Longview who would open their shows for them. According to one concert's press agent, Jim Baltutis, Green Day played a show at a Longview club, the Cafè Forum, in the summer of 1992, which later inspired the title of the song.

This was Green Day's 1st ever song released to the world, and what a fuckin brilliant song it is. When you listen to it you just think to yourself how boring life can be sometimes, and you just want to get pissed or stoned, and/or just go into your own dream world in a world full of fun and partying!

masturbation. thats what its all about. but billie joe is hott, so im glad hes singing about it [: & what makes it obvious is the chorous "bite my lip & close my eyes, take me away to paradise" the line "when masturbation's lost its fun your fucking breaking" & the last lines "slippin away to paradise, some say quit or ill go blind, but its just a myth". AND in the concert dvd 'Bullet In A Bible' Billie Joe jacks off on stage in the middle of this song. pretty hott if you ask me.

I don't see how obvious this has to be, but this song is about getting high. Yes, if you want it to, you can omit parts and make it just about sitting around being bored, but there are a few key lines.

"Take me away to paradise" and "I'm slipping away to paradise" are two obvious ones. I mean, when you're bored, you're not in paradise, but when you're high, you are.

"I got no motivation/Where is my motivation?/No time for motivation/Smoking my inspiration". Easily the most telling part of the song. When you're high, you have NO motivation. Also, he's smoking the inspiration for his songs. I take it literally.

"Sit around and watch the phone, but no one's calling". He is just kinda staring at the phone and slipping off mentally into space. He doesn't expect any calls, but he just happens to be looking at the phone.

"Some say, "Quit or I'll go blind"/but it's just a myth". Just another myth about smoking. People try to scare him into quitting with that, but he knows its bullshit.

So there. I'm not saying you have to accept this as the meaning, I'm just saying I believe that is the INTENDED meaning. It can really work either way.

I used to liek this song but now I love it because of the video,bass, and just how I can relate. I dont liek to masterbate but I do it when I'm bored and after I am even more bored and I go crazy basicaly similar to how a dog may get seperation anxiety and tear up the couch... which is what billy did at the end of the video and the other line says smoking my inspiration like getting high alone to have more fun or to think of something to do but in the end being alone just fucking sucks I really love this song.

Sorry kids but this songs about more than being bored and masterbating. It's about sitting around smoking heroin all day... notice how he says "smoke my inspiration..." and that's what heroin does is makes you basically sit around and do more heroin. PLUS! The masterbation references talking about not being fun is because smack can make you impotant while your high, or at least make it difficult to bust. And the going blind references are refering to a controversial myth/claim about adulterants in some heroin that make you go blind when you smoke it... but most people think it's a myth.
