Your traps are all baited
Your scales are all weighted
But not resisting you would surely drive me insane
So I'm caught and convicted,
My rights are restricted
The imbecile dynasty continues to reign

Your apathy of thought
Has lead you to believe
That things are what they're not
My friend you've been deceived
The easiest route rarely leads to the truth
I see the self approval glaze your eyes
You know you're right
No need to worry why
A thousand stones remain unturned
In the wake of your unquestioned answers
And truth covered lies

Traditions some bear
Idly without out a care
But are determined that they stand unchanged
And those who choose to rebel
Just to raise up some hell
Tell me what are you hoping to gain

I can't reason with you
I speak words you can't hear
Social conditioning left you with deafened ears
So I take your face in hand
See that look in your eyes
That rigormortis stare,
That look that I despise
And so I turn from you
I walk these streets alone
Alone I search for truth
Ideal that you've disowned
And wait with fingers crossed
And pray you'll someday find
A way to see things though your own eyes

General Comment:This song relates to the book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley in many ways, as if it were taken from Bernard's perspective towards Lenina.

General Comment:Honestly, I think that this is one of Dustins vaguest pieces. He really gives little or no clue about what this songs about. The only even slightly solid evidence of some sort of meaning is in the word "rigor mortis."

I had to research a little to find out what it is, but it is basically what I thought it was. Rigor mortis is the state soon after death where the limbs stiffen up and become inflexible. So a rigor mortis stare is most likely a dead stare, glazed eyes, no meaning to life type of look.

I think that that really hints at where Dustin was meaning to go with this song. I know that songs can be interpreted in different ways, but it is always nice to know what was going on in the artists head as he was writing it. It gives a more clear picture fro you so you can produce your own interpretation.

So with the rigor mortis stare definition in mind, I came up with this, and bare with me, my interpretation is similar to many of the other on here, but a few little variations have been added in.

The first stanza talks about government. It implies that government, in a way, restricts your right to knowledge on several levels. One level, not clearly mentioned in the lyrics, is the fact that evolution can be taught in school while creationism, which covers the same ground cannot.

Building on that same concept, the second stanza goes to say that because of this loss of rights, people are developing an "apathy of thought," causing people just to accept things as they are told and not to ask why or what. I think that the most important line of this stanza, if not the song, is when it says, "the easiest route rarely leads to the truth." Seeing as I believe in God, and the fact that His son Jesus Christ died on the cross to redeem our sins and give us eternal life, I believe that this line goes along with that. Religion isn't always as easy to grasp (in fact, nearly never as easy) as other beliefs such as evolution, and people get led away from The Truth because they find those other beliefs easier to conceptualize. I mean, it is not easy, in this world limited to only 3 dimensions, to visualize a being that stretches far beyond any dimension ever conceived of. There is no way to possibly put a human body or any figure to God that will capture his ever-present ambience. Please, I encourage all arguments against this. Attack me for my religion. I will forgive you. God will too.

On to the third stanza. It talks of tradition. We are not given what this tradition is, but I think it is just continuing on the previous argument that people are not questioning why. And those who are questioning, are asking the wrong questions, or they are asking them for the wrong reasons.

Fourth stanza we see this rigor mortis stare. Man this is a powerful stanza. It really calls out to people to think for themselves. The last couple of lines really hit hard on not letting society sway your beliefs, and delves even further than the rest of the song into forming an opinion for yourself, finding out that there is more to life than what is taught in schools.

Ok. That is my bit on this.

Bring on the attacks on religion. I am standing here arms outstretched, ready to fight for God.

General Comment:This song rocks. To me it talks about society's lies and how people are told that "they're not pretty enough" and the unquestioned answer is to do all sorts of shit to yourself like get plastic surgery and wear 200$ worth of makeup, or hang out with 'gangstas' becuase you won't be cool if you don't. And zedd128, I can kind of see where you're getting, how peole are told by preachers and stuff that the Bible's events are true, so they listen blindly, but nobody can really prove that the evnets didn't happen, just like every other religion. I could go deeper into this topic, but that'd take a long time.

General Comment:i agree with most you. i think that Dustin is trying to get a point acrss that we need to see past whats in front of us.'
    your apathy of thought
    has lead you to believe
that things are what they're not
    my friend you've been decieved
the easiest route rarely leads to the truth
i see the self approval glaze your eyes'
this states that what society sees is not always what is truley there. we need to learn to really take the time to read into things and see what really happening. 'the easiest route rarely leads to the truth' this implies if something is presented that is so plan and simple , which may or may not be the government, may not necessarily be the truth. truth comes when you have exausted all other options to a way you want to go, and once you have finally worked all the different angles than you may have some glimpse of what you think truth is.
'and those who choose to rebel
just to raise up some hell
tell me what are you hoping to gain'
now this excerpt reffurs to those who chose to make a problem just for the sake of it. Dustin is implying that these people really hold no values and what they are doing really hurts the cause to claim self truth. these people need to spend the time to figure out what they are really there for and need to utalize their own self worth.
    'i cant reason with you
i speak words you can't hear
social conditioning left you with deafened ears'
this states that after all the years of social conditioning, Dustin is trying to break from society and and became a different person than who you was trained to be. He has seen what he is worth, and he trys to spread his influnece. this task is hard to do casue everyone is acting as they were brought up. This very subject is the main plot for Aldous huxley's, Brave New World. in this book government has complete control of the worlds population. they have the abilty to condition who ever they want to be a certin way. In the book a man from a uncivilized twon in the Grand Cannon is taken to the conditioned Egland, where he is extremly differnet. He trys to convince the society that there is more than what the government tells them and soma, a synthetic drug given to people to calm them down. the society ultamatly rejects him and he ends up killing hi self. This is simmular to Dustin. He is trying to tell people that there is more to live than what we are used to, but the task is too heavy to carry.
    'alone i search for truth
    ideal that you've disowned
    and wait with fingers crossed
    and pray you'll someday find
a way to see things though your own eyes'
This last stanza is just rienforcment to the whole song. Dustin say that he will continue to find his own self worth and he will pray that the general public will find there own truth and not what "they" force upon society.
In conclusion, this song does have a lot of meaning, and i do think that it is one of their best songs. it sends a real message, and it is easy to hear.
Thirce is great and Idintity Crisis is one of their best albums.

General Comment:This song can be applied to many things. for example marijuana had a strong hold on me I would spend my whole paycheck on the stuff and I was just stoned all of the time. One day I heard this song when I was going to smoke and I realized that I wasnt thinking for my self, I was just doing nothing with my life and that my apathy of thought was keeping me from all the great things in life. This song is also about religion, but it is not organized religion it is the religion inside of YOU and realizing that their is a GOD and you will find the truth through him.

General Comment:forgot one thing. the second verse remind's me of my ex-girlfriend and my relationship with her. she really just cared about what i looked like and wasn't interested in my true, creative side. people like that are super shallow, and listen to music like kelly clarkson.
    stupid

General Comment:the last verse is the most emotional and from the heart singing i've ever heard, i think like that so much. i wish people would stop doing stuff just because everyone else likes it (i.e. wearing brand name clothing) but it's like people will never develop their own sense of style and creativity.

that's kinda how i interpreted it, it might be just how i feel about people in general right now.
