when you can want something you hate,
and lie in perfect honesty
from every angle things are crystal clear
when you doubt things of which you're sure
something seems just beyond your hand
you wonder if your living second rate
is my mind too open,
is my heart still beating
do my eyes betray a hint of loneliness
or an ambiguity,
i only want to see the light
when every word makes perfect sense
in every single line you read
but every single line seems to conflict
and the perspectives that i see
a picasso reality
i'm seeing truth through sheets of opaque glass
where does reason stop, and romance begin
i feel the ghosts hitchhiking on the wind
and since when did following your heart become a sin,
I only want to see the light

General Comment:Ok, here it is, the ones in parentheses are my interpretation of the actual lyrics.

when you can want something you hate,
(When you have the desire to sin)
    and lie in perfect honesty
(and try to justify why you can do it)
from every angle things are crystal clear
(The truth is obvious to you)
when you doubt things of which you're sure
    (When you question your faith)
something seems just beyond your hand
    (You need help from something/someone)
you wonder if your living second rate
(You wonder if this is really how God wants you to live)
    is my mind too open,
(Am I letting to much temptation in?)
    is my heart still beating
(Am I still devoted to God)
do my eyes betray a hint of loneliness
(Am I showing this sin that I live in?
    or an ambiguity,
(or the double life I am living?)
i only want to see the light
(I just want to please God)
when every word makes perfect sense
(When you think you have justified your sins)
in every single line you read
    (completely)
but every single line seems to conflict
    (But everything is going against)
and the perspectives that i see
    (What you truly believe)
    a picasso reality
    (A distorted truth)
i'm seeing truth through sheets of opaque glass
(I am trying to live for God but sinning at the same time)
where does reason stop, and romance begin
(Where do I draw the line for sin to stop controlling my life?)
i feel the ghosts hitchhiking on the wind
(God is giving me a free ride, but to him I am transparent)
and since when did following your heart become a sin,
(one last time trying to justify sin)
I only want to see the light
(ANd I only want to please God)

General Comment:I think that this song is basically summarizing the all too common struggle between temptations of sin and following God. Many of the lines reflect the singer (Dustin) trying to justify to himself that what he is doing is not wrong. But, when it says "I only want to see the light" it is describing the fact that what he is doing is wrong and not pleasing to God. I could probably paraphrase this line by line to make it more clear.

General Comment:Listen to ^ please- forget about Thrice is/isn't a Christian band. Yes, some of their stuff refers to the Christian God, but even more of their stuff is made out to be about catholics. Someone made The Red Death out to be full of Christian meaning- that song was taken practically word for word from The Masque of the Red Death, and a line from Romeo and Juliet!
Personally, I'm a Christian, but I don't take much of Thrice's lyrics as relating entirely to God. So let the Thrice religious controversy drop, and focus on the meaning of this song.

No more 'it's about god because thrice is a christian band' crap, ok?

General Comment:Ok, this is going to be a message to the people who are debating wether Thrice has christian lyrics or is a christian band...Why does it matter, I am personally a strong christian and I take the lyrics to be very much about God, but, If you are a non-christian then you can take the lyrics as whatever you want them, to be cant you? that is the beauty of opinion! So why dont the Christians take the music as christian music because to us thats what it is, and the non belivers take it as secular music and leave it alone?!

General Comment:Thrice is most definitely a Christian band. They are all Christians, their lyrics are almost all references to God or Jesus.

General Comment:I signed up just so I could reply to this berk. You obveously don't know that much about the Christian faith, it's not about being a religion it's about having a relationship with God, and if these guys are Christian, true Christians that is then they will want more than anything to share the love they've found in God with everybody they can. If what you said is right "it's a proven fact that even though Dustin and the guys are christians, they didn't have the intention of creating their music to impose their beliefs in any way on their listeners." then why did they create an album packed with almost clique imagery of Christian lifestyle beleifs and strugles. Bloody idiot, unless you know Thrice personaly, look at what theyre recording. Their lyrics are more obveous than most proffesed Christina groups. It's a fact that you can't open your eyes in the secular music scene without looking at a Christian any more, and if your going to be insulting or pissed off by that, listen to some other bands, some nice Christian hating bands, just don't try and tell us we don't beleive what we see with our eyes, we're far better at faith than you.

General Comment:Here we go again with the christian bullshit...this is like the 5th time I've come across the same damn subject that relates to Thrice and their beliefs. You know, you people really are missing the point to why they wrote music in the first place. Let's keep the religion and the music apart for once, for we all know that, and it's a proven fact that even though Dustin and the guys are christians, they didn't have the intention of creating their music to impose their beliefs in any way on their listeners. Now some of you that are too gungho about your beliefs and that will try anything to get others to look at things in your light, fuck off and seriously....think for yourself.

General Comment:Thrice is not a christian band. They state so in their website. Some of the members are christian, but they are NOT a christian band. It seems like if you're a christian on this website, all the songs you reply to are alwaays about this "god" fella (sorry, i'm not going to capitalize the damn g).
