I spent a day by the river
It was quiet and the wind stood still
I spent some time with nature
To remind me of all that's real
It's funny how silence speaks sometimes when you're alone
And remember that you feel
Again I stand against the Faceless Man
Now I saw a face on the water
It looked humble but willing to fight
I saw the will of a warrior
His yoke is easy and His burden is light
He looked me right in the eyes
Direct and concise to remind me
To always do what's right
Again I stand against the Faceless Man
'Cause if the face inside can't see the light
I know I'll have to walk alone
And if I walk alone to the other side
I know I might not make it home
Again I stand against the Faceless Man
Next time I see this face
I'll say I choose to live for always
So won't you come inside And never go away

General Comment:Guys and gals,to resolve this, I am giving you the answer

The song sings of four characters:
    1) nature- a place of solitude and encounter with oneself and the transcendent realm, also the outer world.
    2) Scott himself: his inner person, with an inner face and an inner world, also connectable to the transcendent
    3)the Face on the water:Jesus
    4) The Faceless Man:the Eternal Stranger, represents the archetype of Death, the personification of the ultimate boundary of knowable human existence. Consider the cowled figure of the grim reaper, or the faceless third spirit in "A Christmas Carol".

Basically, Scott is asking the Face ( Jesus) on the water (from the outer world)to enter Scott's inner world and "never go away", thus choosing eternal life which gives him strength to face the Faceless Man ( death, mortality, innermost fear of lack of purpose and terminality of human life).

    That's it, folks.

General Comment:The faceless man is Jesus christ end of story, Scott always writes religious songs this is one of them. "
"Cause if the face inside can't see the light"
He's saying that if he himself loses faith, he won't make it through.

General Comment:I think the first comment on this song is good. But I disagree with one part of it.

"Now I saw a face on the water,
it looked humble, but willing to fight"

I think the water is showing us that he is talking about his own reflection in this part. He is humble but willing to fight. That is a great line.

The next part is about Jesus, his yoke etc, and it uses "his".

General Comment:I think this song is about coming to a point in life where we have to make a decision to choose whether or not to take a leap of faith or to walk on.
The singer may have had doubts regarding the validity of his faith, but he finds reassurance from the Bible regarding the nature of Christ.

Sometimes though I do believe that that scripture is quoted out of context as a "feel good" remedy.. when in actuality, the Christian life isn't easy. Jesus said to those who were heavy laden with emotional burdens, who were already so weighed down with the world... yes for those who maybe contimplating suicide to come to him... those who are weary of the trials that come with life to come and rest with Him.

But then later he talks about taking up our cross and following him. Shedding everything we know, stepping out of the familar and into the unfamilar, and to carry a weight so heavy that sometimes we will stumble and fall along the way. The cross an instrument of death, was one of the Roman's best and most excruciating way of torture and execution. So, with that in mind, this decision to actually FOLLOW Christ, not just bask in the warmth of forgiveness and in the safety of the church... is a hard task. It's going and living for Christ every single day, EVERYWHERE.. not just on Sundays. It's changing your lifestyle, and turning away from things which tempt us away from the narrow path. It's keeping our eyes ahead on the prize, but also it's loving our enemies. It's about forgiving the guy who breaks into your car, and it's about helping people get justice. It's about running a business and being accountable instead of doctoring books and lieing to the shareholders. It's about living a life of integrity...

    A hard decision...

If you want to know the benefits though, go to church, read the bible.. or better yet.. try it.

General Comment:i think the faceless man is scott.
sometimes scott talks of himself as a different
individual like in "Hello my friend we met again"
in the My Sacrifice song, the friend scott was refering there was himself.. (Scott told in an interview in making the video... about finding ones self)

and i believe the man on the water is Jesus
    wherein scott is getting inspiration.

So scott is trying to find his 'face' by by living the rigth ways and making Jesus as his light.
